“FANTASTICO”
Reviewed 17 April 2011

Just returned from 4 nights in the Centurion Palace, top class hotel. We had a week booked in a brand new hotel in Egypt for our Honeymoon which fell through as our hotel was not complete in time, so at the last minute booked this hotel which was a fantastic choice. The staff were so friendly and would do anything to help you. As we were on our Honeymoon we got upgraded to a canal view room which was just spectacular. The breakfast was amazing and we has champagne every morning. The location was perfect, you can see St Marks square from our bedroom window. All in all this was a perfect honeymoon couldn't of asked for better.
Thanks to all the staff at the Centurion

- If arriving to Venice airport, take the water-taxi option (13 euros each), takes 1 hour and it lands at Zarette, approx 15min walk from the hotel

- Arriving in boat straight to the hotel dock is of course extraordinary but very expensive

- We stayed one night, booked via SHL.com (members). We booked a decent room but clearly got an astonishing upgrade (room 502). It is a 2 floor apartment, with grand views of the Canale and the next-door church. Stunning!

- Classy modern style, fashionable yet cosy furniture

- Golden bathroom is perhaps a bit too Italian but what the heck, it was pretty cool

- The nearby 600 year old Church is so close to your window (viewpoint from bed for example) that you think you could reach out to it

- 2 flatscreeen tv

- Nice products in bathroom but here is an opportunity to develop even more

- On the 2nd floor in our room/apartment, under exceptional wooden ceiling (could it be 200-300 years old?), you have a great bed and then next to it a huge modern bathtub, prepped with extra towels and everything for a romantic evening

- At arrival, we had strawberries with chocolate (no extra charge) waiting for us

- Ipod docking station

- Financial times etc every morning

- We had to leave early morning - of course they prepared breakfast boxes for us.

We really loved the centurion palace and would highly recommend it.

The best bits:
1. We booked a return water taxi in advance and had a seamless (albeit high speed!) transfer right to and from the small pontoon at the front of the hotel. No need to lump cases around the small streets.
2. The hotel is decorated in a very contemporary way but the mix of old and new really works well.
3. All of the staff were extremely friendly and keen to help.
4. Our room was lovely, small but perfectly formed. We had two small windows with views over the grand canal where we spent much time watching the world go by.
5. We loved the location, quiet but right opposite san marco piazza which was easily accessed, and with some lovely small shops and restaurants close by.
6. The hotel restaurant was excellent, especially for the included breakfast.

Areas for improvement:
As with most higher class hotels , food and drink (including the mini bar) was very expensive - as an example 16 euros in the lounge for a beer and a bottle of water.

I ordered a bottle of champagne in advance of our arrival (for my Wife's birthday) and was amazed when this was delivered to our room to be told by the member of staff that this was complimentary. I checked twice and there was even a little handwritten note saying "with our compliments". What an amazing touch we thought.and I even went to reception to thank them. However, it seems this was a mistake by the bar staff and the champagne was charged to my account. I have no quibble with paying as at the end of the day I ordered the champagne, it was disappointing though that the information given was incorrect.

And finally, at the restaurant on our first night I asked for a bottle of Barolo. When the wine came it was actually Brunello (obviously my poor Italian). I decided to go with this as I had not tried it before, but got a real surprise at the end of the meal to find that the wine was 140 euros. I put this down to experience but the fact that you can buy the wine in the UK (imported from Italy) for 30 euros shows the massive mark up added by the hotel.

Overall we loved our trip to Venice and will definitely use the Centurion Palace again despite these minor issues.

From the moment we arrived, via private water taxi (well worth the €100), we were very well looked after. We booked a superior room - 406 - (with Grand Canal view), it was well appointed, if compact. The bathroom (shower only) looked amazing, but ... unfortunately on our first morning the shower cascaded across the floor, soaking everything. However, the receptionist redeemed the hotel by swiftly moving us into a junior suite - 402- on the same floor. Huge room, fab bathroom & 15ft high windows with panoramic views of the Grand Canal. Breakfast is excellent - a huge selection of hot and cold dishes, fresh fruit, pastries, good coffee and Prosecco too. The waiting staff were charming and attentive.
If you take the treghetto (50 cent gondola that ferries you across the Grand Canal - unless it's raining!), two minutes from the hotel, you can walk to St Mark's Square in 5 minutes.
I would highly recommend this hotel, great location, staff and building.

Beautiful hotel, beautiful staff, beautiful city the staff where so helpful and knowlegdeable with perfect bi-lingual abilities unfortunately we had room 108 which is small (no great problem), it had no DO NOT DISTURB SIGN, the shower hadn't been used for some time and the plunger that operates the shower had rusted in so we had to call up room service, the gentleman came sprayed some oil into it and it was fine till the next morning when I had to fight with it again.
Aircon/heating unit is noisy and tends to go on all night, probably my own fault for booking via British Airways and not direct, I probably would have got a larger cupboard.
I would go again but knowing what I do I would make 1 or 2 requests.

The Centurion Palace Hotel added to our enjoyment of Venice, a beautiful and magical city full of wonder and history. Located on the Grand Canal, the main lifeline of Venice, the hotel evokes the past era of grandeur as its facade is typical of 14th and 15th century venetian "palazzos". However, the interior has been completely renovated to excite the senses with modern and original artifacts. Our room, facing the canal, was welcoming with its chic decor and the bathroom opulent with its gilded interior. The personnel was welcoming and very helpful with all our requests. The copious and delicious varieties of foods at breakfast was only enhanced by the friendly staff who were only too happy to make our stay a most enjoyable one. The hotel is conveniently located close to museums, shops and St. Mark's Square. Ask about the use of the Traghetto close to the hotel which is a gondola ride crossing the Grand Canal and costing approx. 75 cents. Our wonderful experience in Venice was definitely enhanced by our stay at the Centurion Palace hotel.
