“Perfect short break”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

My husband and I stayed here at the end of March for 4 nights. It was to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We booked through lastminute.com and in our opinion got a very good deal. We spent hours doing research on the internet and finally settled on the Hotel Al Sole as we liked the location and the look of the building. Well we were certainly not dissapointed. We opted for a superior canal view room and we got room 105. I was a little bit nervous about being on the first floor as other reviewers pointed out the noise from below. I am very pleased to say that we had no noise issues at all. The windows are completely soundproof and if that is not enough you can also close the shutters to be extra comfortable. The room was spotless, very comfortable and a lovely haven to return to after a long day of sight-seeing. As others have pointed out the location is excellent for both the bus station and the vaporetto. We also loved strolling along the back streets and exploring all the less busy areas.
As far as restaurants are concerned, yes the choice is overwhelming, but what we enjoyed most was getting some pizza from the takeaway up the road from the hotel and a bottle of wine and sitting by the canal having our own little picnic. Highly recommended for a relaxed and informal dinner and a fraction of the price of a restaurant.
Breakfast at the Hotel was fine for us. Enough choice and lots on offer with a great selection of fresh fruit too. The staff serving breakfast were very efficient and replenished items continually so we were never short of anything.
Reception staff also very helpful and friendly and gave us a map on arrival and explained the location. We found the map quite useful even though we did have more detailed maps.
I would also highly recommend visiting Burano and Murano, we absolutely loved them. A completely different feel to Venice and very quaint with beautiful little shops and streets to explore.
I would love to go back to Venice and would be more than happy to stay at this Hotel again.

Room Tip: Personally I do think it's worth paying extra for a superior canal view room. How often do you...

This hotel was the most expensive hotel we stayed in during our 2 week trip to Italy and by far the worst. Our room smelled the entire time we were there, even if we left the windows open all day. On our last full day we were asked for our key as we were leaving to sight see for the day, when we said we were more comfortable taking it with us, we were chased into the street by a staff member and told we HAD to leave the key. When we returned that day we only had to give our room number to get our key back... I could have said any number and they would have given me the key, not a comforting feeling. When we return to Venice we will either pay more of a nicer more central hotel, or we will go for a bargain so we won't feel like we have wasted so much money.

Dear Guest,

we are very sorry that you did not enjoyed your stay with us, we hope anyway that your journey in Venice has been good.
We just like to puntualize a couple of things: first is that smell it depends by the tide, when in Venice there is particulary low tide unfortunately there is a bad smell and is not possible to solve this problem, it come directly from canals and as a consequence is it perceptible in bathrooms.
Regarding keys, we prefer to keep keys directly in hotel because if key is it lost there is a quite expensive amount to charge and we prefer to avoid this not nice circumstance to our guests.
I like to remark that there is a security system and we never had problems regardink "keys on demand".
In any case we thank you to let us know your opinion because it will be a good point to focus us trying to improve our service as we try to do everytime.
Withe best regards

Glad we chose this hotel; great friendly and helpful staff, clean good size rooms and bathroom. Comfortable large beds. Reasonably near bus and train terminals.
Breakfast adequate for a buffet but would get monotonous over along period.
Excellent restaurant recommendations (apart from Zanne- avoid), we wanted to extend our stay but they were full!

Room Tip: We booked a canal view room which meant we were not particularly overlooked (a problem in Venice). V...

We booked this as part of a package with MyVenice. The location couldnt be better. It's a really short walk from Piazzale Roma where the No 5 airport bus arrives. However once you have walked over a couple of small bridges you find yourself in a beautiful and quiet backwater. We were really pleased to be able to escape back to this haven of tranquility after battling with the crowds in San Marco.

The close proximity to the Vaporetto terminal on the Grand Canal also makes this an extremely convenient location for getting around. Its also easy to wander through the back streets of Santa Croce to walk to the Rialto Bridge.

The hotel itself was lovely with extremely friendly staff. Our room (118) was at the back of the hotel and didnt have a view. However this didnt matter to us as we spent most of the daytime out in the city. The room was a reasonable size, very clean and nicely decorated.

One minor complaint about room 118 was the lack of soundproofing from the neighbouring room 122 which was occupied on our last night by a French family with a small child who spent the whole time singing at the top of her voice. You could hear every word through the wall. However this was a minor problem and I am sure we could have asked to move if we wished.

We were recommended the nearby Ae Cravate restaurant where we obtained a 10% discount as Al Sole customers. This was a wonderful family-run place with excellent food.

Breakfast at the hotel was OK with plenty of choice although I agree with previous adverse comments about the "fruit juice".

Would definitely stay here again if we come back to Venice

Room Tip: Room 118 soundproofing could have been better

I booked this hotel on Alpharooms at a very reasoable rate and was just bowled over by how wonderful it was. The hotel is just a short walk from the central bus station, overlooking a small quiet canal. We were lucky enough to have room 105 which has a small balcony overlooking the canal. The room itself was newly refurbished, very large, with flat screen tv - the only English channel we found was BBC World News - tea/coffee, mini bar, safe, very comfy beds and immaculate bedding. The en suite bathroom was huge, with lovely towels and toiliteries and a door off the bathroom led to a large shower room/toilet. Breakfast was buffet style, plentiful but rather basic. The staff were absoluteluy outstanding and could not have been more helpful. A word of warning, we took the water bus from the airport, this took ages and deposited us in completely the wrong part of the city. For a fraction of the price we could have got the regular bus service, which was far quicker and stopped very near the hotel. We bought 36 hour water bus passes and visited 3 nearby islands as well as the Lido, St Mark's Sq and many other attractions - excellent value, although generally I found Venice far more expensive than Rome or Florence. If you are considering a trip to Venice, you could not do better than stay at this marvellous hotel.

Room Tip: room 105 a must!

We stayed at the "Al Sole" for 2 nights.

The good points:
Very nice location, close to everything, but quiet enough to have good rest.

Very nice view from the room. (see picture)

Impressive building. It is a really nice place!!!

The very bad points:
Bad service. the first morning we left the room at 10 am, leaving the keys at reception. The room was still not done at 4 pm. They wanted to do it at 16:30 while we were having some rest.

Awful breakfast: One of the worst breakfast I've ever had. everything is bad, fake powder orange juices, machine milk, bad bread and cakes, etc...

regards

Great location just 10 minutes walk from the busstation Piazzale Roma (especially if you arrive at night time and are not familiar with the area!). We paid €60.00 per night which we consider a really good deal. The room was small and had no view but was clean.
The hotel is located in an old venetian palace and full of atmosphere. Breakfast buffet was good, especially if one remembers the typical breakfast Italian hotels used to serve not too long ago. Juices, cereals, rolls, coffee machine with lots of choices etc. etc. Very nice and helpful staff.
The icing on the cake: halfway between the Piazzale Roma and the hotel is the #1 (out of more than 600) rated restaurant in Venice, which is actually just a hole in the wall, standing room only, but serves great rolls with ham, cheese, sausage and wine/prosecco each for just €0.60 to €1.20 (Bacareto da Lele). You have to go there!
