“Great location, great staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2013

This hotel is a 5 minute walk from Piazzale Roma, the main transportation hub in Venice. The rooms are nice, although the bed was somewhat too firm for my wife; however the staff was exceptional and really made the stay great. Breakfast was very good. The hotel is within walking distance to Piazza San Marco and other attractions, and is also close to canal waterbus stops. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a canal view. The rooms are quiet and the view is a delight.

We stayed at the Hotel Al Sole at the beginning of May because we were very happy with the hotel in our previous stay in 2002. The hotel is in an excellent location, about a 10 minute walk to the bus or train station. It is far enough away from the crowded St. Mark's area, yet not a long walk or vaporetto ride from that or any other area in Venice. We opted for the canal view room this time after having a garden view room last time. I'm a light sleeper, but I found the canal view room to be a quiet option with a great view. I'm not a big breakfast person, so I found the offerings to be sufficient. Rolls, ham and cheese, and yogurt, along with juice was fine with me. People looking for the big American style buffet breakfast will be disappointed in most European hotels, as that is not how they do breakfast. The hotel staff is helpful with recommendations for dining or sightseeing, and they even offer a water taxi to Murano in the morning for guests. We didn't take advantage of that service, but my understanding is that you must get yourself back on your own. Still, that is still a very generous service to provide for guests. There is a computer in the lobby for guests, but you must purchase a card to use the computer. That was unusual, as any other hotel I've stayed in offered free use of a computer for guests, but it was not a show stopper. In closing, the hotel is very clean and full of character. I have enjoyed both stays and would absolutely consider another stay should we return to Venice.

Ideal setting for short visit to Venice - only minutes away from the Bus Station yet instantly in the heart of atmospheric Venice and within easy walking distance of all the sights. Hotel staff were immensely friendly and helpful (booked us tickets, gave us advice etc.), our room , overlooking the canal, spotlessly clean, and public areas spacious and comfortable. Possible only quibble was breakfast - - coffee out of a machine - but a small price to pay for all the other advantages of this well situated hotel. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for 4 nights around the same time as the reviewer below Nina2263 and I have to agree with everything she says, except the fruit was replaced and improved greatly. The breakfast is often talked about on tripadvisor, it consists of cereals, fruit juice, various crossants, which were ok, an interesting mix of sugar, marmalade, chocolate, not in the same one, but the French do make the best not the Italians. There is Ham, cheese, hard boiled eggs and desserts!! Breakfast is not the most inspiring but its ok, I have heard from others that it sounds typical for the area. I had much worse in Spain once. There was an occassional smell, its Venice it does. Room sizes do vary a lot, but its an old building and not uniform. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. We had a room overlooking the canal, it can be noisy, with boats, its venetian traffic in the early morning, people are going to work, deliveries are being made. If you want to sleep in stay at the back of the hotel overlooking the garden. The Hotel could do with a bar for evenings, being such a quiet area at night there are restaurants near by, and only 1 small very typical venetian bar next door, but its small and for us it was too cold to sit outside in the evening.

Room Tip: The canal side has the best rooms, but you will be woken early by people and boats.

Lovely 4 night stay with my husband in April 2013. Front desk team could not have been more helpful, they were great. Location in San Polo was excellent. Away from the very busy tourist areas, however only a 20 minute walk to Rialto and 30 mins to St Marks. Also only a 5 minute walk from the bus/train station and you can easily walk even with a roller case. Stayed in room 226 which was very spacious and always spotless. This room only has a shower which we didn't mind. This was an inside room with courtyard view so not much light, however we had only paid for a classic room and were very happy with this. We were always out all day so canal views were not important to us. The room was extremely quiet. I noticed some rooms were extremely small so best emailing the hotel and asking for a specific room if possible. Breakfast was continental. Pastries, cereals, meat and cheese, coffee, tea etc. It was simple but a good start to the day. The breakfast area flooded one day when we were there, but this is Venice so to be expected especially at this time of year in some ground floor areas. Would recommend and would happily return.

Room Tip: Room 226 is an inside courtyard room. Not much light but very spacious.Great base was a visit. Show...

First thing you should know if you intend to book here..... Hotel Al Sole ( like most of Venice) is probably not suitable if you have mobility issues. The elevator is not big enough to accommodate a wheelchair, rigid walking frame etc, and there are further stairs throughout the hotel on various levels.
The second thing you should know is that breakfasts here are not the best. If you like coffee, cold croissants and ham, you'll be fine. If you are expecting the usual hotel fare of bacon, eggs, hot food of any kind, or even a loaf of bread and a toaster, you will be disappointed. If you have any type of problems with dairy, egg, gluten, cholesterol, salt or prefer low carbohydrate, my advice would be to take your own breakfast. Your only other option is to take on the fruit bowl, and I will be perfectly honest - the fruit bowl was full, but all the fruit was overripe ( think black bananas and mushy pears) and really inedible.
Al Sole is actually quite a nice hotel (considering it is only rated a three star). It is in a really convenient location once you work out where it is in relation to the Grand Canal, and for me, it proved a bonus that it was also out of the main tourist areas. The canals can be noisy, and thankfully this was not the case here. The rooms are spotlessly clean but do vary in size - our party had two rooms. Ours was huge with a small bathroom overlooking the canal, and the other room was tiny with a huge bathroom and French doors opening onto a balcony.
I will also say that first impressions at this hotel were disasterous and it was only that our stay here was longer than one night that saved this review. Arriving at night, the hotel's immediate neighborhood was all boarded up with security grills, poorly lit and covered in graffiti. The smell inside the hotel when you opened the door was gag worthy and unmistakably of raw sewerage. The horrendous smell pervaded through to the top floor and made our room pretty uncomfortable. By the end of the second day, the smell had gone and hotel was a much more pleasant place to stay. The neighborhood brightens considerably during the day, and is much quieter than many of the other areas of Venice. The room tariffs are really reasonable for Venice, and the concierge will hang onto your bags after checkout if you have a late flight.
Despite some shortcomings, I would stay here again.

We recently stayed at Hotel al Sole for the second time in two years. We just love this hotel for so many reasons: the hotel itself is historic and beautiful, the staff is always very nice and helpful, and the location is just perfect -- not too crowded yet within easy walking distance of everything. Plus there are several fabulous restaurants nearby. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to beautiful Venice!

Room Tip: Be sure you get a room facing the canal -- so worth it for the view and also to hear the distant chu...
