“Disapointed Stay”
Reviewed 24 October 2013

The hotel gladly stored our luggage upon early arrival untill check in. We were told we got an upgraded room overlooking the canal. Room was small, top bed spread was stained, pillows thin & hard. Air conditioning was turned off for the season even though the outside temp was mild in mid October. Without the air conditioning we had to open the windows to let the misquito's in & the late night noise which went on to 1am. Then the early morning canal deliveries & garbage barge parked out front woke us up at 5:30am. We closed the windows but soon the room became to hot. There was no fan available on AC unit or ceiling fan to use. The front desk said there is nothing they could do. Not the last experience of Venice we wanted. It is a quaint old palace, with nice interior patio and good breakfast. The location is convienient to Plazza Roma with only 2 bridges to hall luggage over. We stayed a week earlier at a much nicer & quieter hotel near St. Mark's Square for the same money but a 4*. We picked this location because we were coming off a cruise ship, staying the nigth & leaving the next day.

Room Tip: If travelling off peak season make sure the AC hasn't been turned off so that you can close wind...

Dear guest , thank you for expressing your opinion , we would only be able to clarify a few things about you review.
In many hotels in Venice, as in hotel Al Sole, is usually possible to have air conditioning in the spring / summer and heating in autumn / winter; this year the first week of October was really cold and as usual we made the change from cold to hot, which must be performed by qualified personnel (not of the hotel) and that is not reversible in a short time. After first week the medium temeprature in Italy have been raised , it is unusual that at the end October there are 20°/22° and hence the problem of warm room; unfortunately, not dependent on us , the same thing in relation to mosquitos (usually they are not present at the end of October because it should be cold).
Also If at 5.30 there was a boat of garbage collectors, unfortunately we can not do anything because is planned by City Hall.
We regret very much that has not been pleased with your stay with us , the upgrade to a room overlooking the canal is understood by us as a gift (thing that we do with pleasure if sometime we are in condition to do it) because are the rooms most popular and expensive; in this case , unfortunately, reading the review we understand that this was the thing instead has probably changed his opinion about the hotel but I hope you can at least appreciate that our intention was to make a pleasant surprise and not to create disappointment.
Relatively to bed and pillows, we do not want to argue because i think it is a very personal thing that each person may perceive differently, we wish only to say for who is reading that usually, even reading many other reviews, we do not receive complaints about it.
Thank you for your attention

We stayed at Hotel Al Sole for five days in October and really enjoyed our visit. The hotel is in a great location, just 10 minute’s walk from the bus/train station (directions on hotel website are spot on) and with plenty of good, well priced restaurants, cafes and snack shops within easy walking distance (10% off at Ristorante Ae Cravatte over the ‘road’ if you book through the hotel, and well worth it). On our arrival we were given an upgrade to a canal view room- lovely view but the street/canal is rather noisy late night/early morning (but only a problem if you want your window open overnight). Check in was stated as 2pm, but our room was ready when we arrived at midday. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, despite some obvious wear and tear; good shower and hair dryer in bathroom, but no tea & coffee making facilities in the room! All staff were friendly, helpful and spoke good English. The reception area has toilets, a luggage store, comfortable seating areas (also on 1st floor) and a small, quiet bar (beware that your bar bill may double due to ‘tourist tax’- ours did!). Breakfast is great- 7.30-10.30am (so you can have a lay-in)- including croissants, fresh bread and cakes, cold meats and cheese, yoghurts, cereal, tea, coffee and juice. The hotel is about 25-35 mins walk from the Academia, Rialto and San Marco areas, and easily navigable thanks to a very helpful map from reception. At check in we were sort of lead to believe that they can arrange cheaper Gondola rides, but it’s the same price as everywhere else, they just arrange it for you- this could have been our misunderstanding (we didn’t go for it anyway). The hotel’s free water taxi and glass factory tour to Murano is worth it (but don’t feel pressured into buying anything), though you have to pay for your water bus back (€7 each, easily done and cheaper than a proper island tour). All in all we would definitely return to Hotel Al Sole and would recommend others to as well!

Room Tip: Back view rooms are probably quieter but a canal view is worth it. They are sometimes able to upgrad...

quaint building, like every building in Venice - 15 minutes from the Bus terminus or train station - room check in with Valentina was easy, we found comfort with the question "is this a good choice for our place to stay at!" - we had a view of the canal, with the windows open and experienced every sound of life in normal Venice! - waking up to the sounds of Venice is indeed quite something - check out with Gabriella was also easy and helpful - I recommend Hotel Al Sole - love Venice!

The hotel al sole is a typical Venetian hotel with a calming and relaxing atmosphere. The rooms are adequate and clean and had a beautiful canal view room. The breakfast was beautiful and gave a wide choice of fruits and fresh croissants, ham, cheese, salami ect. The breakfast garden is AMAZING and having tiny birds chirping perched on the back of the chair was beautiful. The hotel staff are very helpful and would deffo recommend a canal view room. Hotel al sole is a beautiful hotel in a beautiful city. The hotel is very well located and I would deffo return

Attractive old palazzo with a gorgeous internal courtyard for drinks and breakfast. Definitely go for canal rooms as others are very small. Good service and pretty view over canal. Good value but a bit of a walk from the centre. V much enjoyed our stay.

An important benefit of this hotel is that it feels in the centre of the city, but is only a 5 minute walk from the car park, buses or station. So you don't need expensive water taxis to get there. Rooms were pleasant, air conditioning worked (which can be an issue in Venice!) and a nice outdoor eating area for breakfast. Venice is expensive, so nothing is great value, but this was fairly priced for the city. The public areas of the hotel are just what you expect: old, a little decayed, but charming.
Staff were fine, but insisted on recommending restaurants that obviously paid them for sending the business.

Dear Guest,

thank you very much for your review and appreciation, we are pleased to know that you have a good memory of what has been your home in Venice.
With this reply we would like to clarify that we are not paid by restaurants to send them business and we can not confirm this suggestion that calls into question our professionalism.
We have selected a very small number of restaurants (in the "jungle" of Venice) to be able to give a very good choice to our guests and if we talk about restaurants is simply to advise that there are certain benefits being our guests, as for example discounts.
One of the things we are most proud of is our honesty and the fact that we can make it available to our guests.
Hoping that the fact it is made clear we send our best regards and thank you again to write about us.

Got there around 10am in morning. Room wasn't ready so had to wait until check-in time. No problem. At the reception, checked-in with the manager who also seemed like the owner. He didn't seem very welcoming, and his demeanor rather business-like. As we were conversating, he totally ignored me and started chatting to someone who was leaving the hotel. That was rude. Anyways, as we check-in he went on a quick 1 minute spiel about taking tours to Murano and bla bla. No thank you. Now to the hotel itself.

Location wonderful once you know exactly how to get here. Only 10 minutes walk to Train station. Room and bed is exactly what you could expect from a 3 star. Nothing fancy but very appropriate of its rating. Breakfast is continental style. No warm items. Croissants were good and fresh. Value for money. Yes.
