We had initially booked another hotel a month before our trip. As I usually do I phoned a day before departure to make certain that our room preference was still possible. I was shocked to discover that the hotel had made a mistake with the dates and they had no room for us. Where to find a room for four nights in Venice with 24 hours notice........not easy. After much anxious and fruitless searching I phoned the Hotel Al Sole. What a relief to be told by a helpful and friendly lady that they could accommodate us. We asked for a quiet twin-room and that would certainly be possible she said. The price was very reasonable for Venice.

We found that the position of the hotel suited us perfectly. It is a short walk from Piazzale Roma Bus Station yet the area is charming and truly Venetian. It is about ten minutes walk to the S. Toma vaporetto stop and also the 2 Euro ferry across the Grand Canal.

The hotel building is beautiful and is on a canal. The interior is pleasant. We had asked for a quiet room away from the canal. They kindly put us in room 125 at the end of the passage and we experienced no noise at all. Some people prefer the front rooms looking out onto the canal but then you have to accept the accompanying late night noise. The room size was generous and everything was clean. Beds were comfortable and all fittings worked well. You need to ask for tea making facilities as this is not normally provided. The bathroom was perfectly adequate though perhaps slightly dated. Shower pressure and temperature was good. Lighting and mirrors were also good. The A/C was turned off in mid-October but we found that if we closed the shutters and curtains sufficient air came in without any mosquitos.

We found the breakfast to be excellent. A wide selection of fresh fruit, yoghurts and cereals, various types of fresh croissants and bread, cold meats and cheeses. There was a variety of coffees and teas to choose from, all of good quality.

The staff were friendly, welcoming and most helpful at all times. They were always willing to answer questions and give directions if required.

There are many restaurants in the vicinity. When we asked about restaurants nearby the staff told us about Osteria ae Cravate about 20 metres away. They certainly did not pressure us at all but mentioned that hotel guests receive a 10% discount. We dined there twice and found it by far the best and good value as well.

We felt pleased with our stay and would recommend it.

Room Tip: If you are looking for peaceful nights don't choose a canal facing room.

Stayed here for 2 days mid October. good position, 10mins from the station although can be difficult to find first time. Our room was compact, rather dark, had a small balcony facing the patio area which we didn't use as shady, bathroom was well appointed, spacious and clean.
Good breakfast, breads, ham, ,cheese, cakes etc, quite busy with residents.
We ate in the suggested restaurant across the road for an evening meal which was good, perhaps a little more expensive than other restaurants.
We enjoyed the position of the hotel and our early morning walks to St Peters Square, seeing everyone getting ready for the day, quieter, before the majority of tourists arrived.
Very close to the station and the water bus for a trip along the grand canal. Good value hotel, to be in Venice and step outside the hotel immediately next to a canal was very good.

Room Tip: Choose one overlooking the canal.

The hotel gladly stored our luggage upon early arrival untill check in. We were told we got an upgraded room overlooking the canal. Room was small, top bed spread was stained, pillows thin & hard. Air conditioning was turned off for the season even though the outside temp was mild in mid October. Without the air conditioning we had to open the windows to let the misquito's in & the late night noise which went on to 1am. Then the early morning canal deliveries & garbage barge parked out front woke us up at 5:30am. We closed the windows but soon the room became to hot. There was no fan available on AC unit or ceiling fan to use. The front desk said there is nothing they could do. Not the last experience of Venice we wanted. It is a quaint old palace, with nice interior patio and good breakfast. The location is convienient to Plazza Roma with only 2 bridges to hall luggage over. We stayed a week earlier at a much nicer & quieter hotel near St. Mark's Square for the same money but a 4*. We picked this location because we were coming off a cruise ship, staying the nigth & leaving the next day.

Room Tip: If travelling off peak season make sure the AC hasn't been turned off so that you can close windows.

Dear guest , thank you for expressing your opinion , we would only be able to clarify a few things about you review.
In many hotels in Venice, as in hotel Al Sole, is usually possible to have air conditioning in the spring / summer and heating in autumn / winter; this year the first week of October was really cold and as usual we made the change from cold to hot, which must be performed by qualified personnel (not of the hotel) and that is not reversible in a short time. After first week the medium temeprature in Italy have been raised , it is unusual that at the end October there are 20°/22° and hence the problem of warm room; unfortunately, not dependent on us , the same thing in relation to mosquitos (usually they are not present at the end of October because it should be cold).
Also If at 5.30 there was a boat of garbage collectors, unfortunately we can not do anything because is planned by City Hall.
We regret very much that has not been pleased with your stay with us , the upgrade to a room overlooking the canal is understood by us as a gift (thing that we do with pleasure if sometime we are in condition to do it) because are the rooms most popular and expensive; in this case , unfortunately, reading the review we understand that this was the thing instead has probably changed his opinion about the hotel but I hope you can at least appreciate that our intention was to make a pleasant surprise and not to create disappointment.
Relatively to bed and pillows, we do not want to argue because i think it is a very personal thing that each person may perceive differently, we wish only to say for who is reading that usually, even reading many other reviews, we do not receive complaints about it.
Thank you for your attention

We stayed at Hotel Al Sole for five days in October and really enjoyed our visit. The hotel is in a great location, just 10 minute’s walk from the bus/train station (directions on hotel website are spot on) and with plenty of good, well priced restaurants, cafes and snack shops within easy walking distance (10% off at Ristorante Ae Cravatte over the ‘road’ if you book through the hotel, and well worth it). On our arrival we were given an upgrade to a canal view room- lovely view but the street/canal is rather noisy late night/early morning (but only a problem if you want your window open overnight). Check in was stated as 2pm, but our room was ready when we arrived at midday. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, despite some obvious wear and tear; good shower and hair dryer in bathroom, but no tea & coffee making facilities in the room! All staff were friendly, helpful and spoke good English. The reception area has toilets, a luggage store, comfortable seating areas (also on 1st floor) and a small, quiet bar (beware that your bar bill may double due to ‘tourist tax’- ours did!). Breakfast is great- 7.30-10.30am (so you can have a lay-in)- including croissants, fresh bread and cakes, cold meats and cheese, yoghurts, cereal, tea, coffee and juice. The hotel is about 25-35 mins walk from the Academia, Rialto and San Marco areas, and easily navigable thanks to a very helpful map from reception. At check in we were sort of lead to believe that they can arrange cheaper Gondola rides, but it’s the same price as everywhere else, they just arrange it for you- this could have been our misunderstanding (we didn’t go for it anyway). The hotel’s free water taxi and glass factory tour to Murano is worth it (but don’t feel pressured into buying anything), though you have to pay for your water bus back (€7 each, easily done and cheaper than a proper island tour). All in all we would definitely return to Hotel Al Sole and would recommend others to as well!

Room Tip: Back view rooms are probably quieter but a canal view is worth it. They are sometimes able to upgrade on arrival depending on how busy they are, but maybe don't rely on that.

quaint building, like every building in Venice - 15 minutes from the Bus terminus or train station - room check in with Valentina was easy, we found comfort with the question "is this a good choice for our place to stay at!" - we had a view of the canal, with the windows open and experienced every sound of life in normal Venice! - waking up to the sounds of Venice is indeed quite something - check out with Gabriella was also easy and helpful - I recommend Hotel Al Sole - love Venice!
