“1st stay of our honeymoon”
Reviewed 15 November 2013

We arrived in Italy and got a private speed boat from the airport to the door of the Hotel Grande Canal, it felt like we were in a James bond movie. Great way to kick off our honeymoon! When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by a friendly member of staff who took our suitcase. we were taken to the hotel reception and given tips and advice on getting round venice, including the very important map which without we would have been wondering around in circles. The room was quite small but perfectly comfortable and all we needed as we were only in there to sleep, as the days sight seeing were long. The breakfast was good, with a good choice. Definitely recommend this small but friendly hotel!

This hotel is a lovely place to stay for a few days, the staff are super friendly and the rooms well looked after. It is very close to the water bus which can take you anywhere along the canal and is a good 45 minute idilic walk to st Marc's basilica. The reason I haven't given this hotel full marks is because the breakfast was quite poor, if you wanted your egg anything other than hard boiled the charge was €4! If you wanted anything other than straight plain coffee e.g. A cappuccino, you had to pay around €4 for this too. You must be prepared for a culture of serious overcharging in Venice in General and sadly, the longer we stayed the more we thought about the money rather than the experience that Venice obviously has to offer. The weekend (two nights) cost us around £1000 plus the flights. You must do Venice, it is a beautiful place and if we were ever to go back (which is highly unlikely) we would definately stay at this hotel again. Be aware though, this city will relive you of as much money as it can in as short a space of time as possible. It was my wife's birthday weekend and she was delighted with the whole experience so all in all it was worth it.

Room Tip: The prestige rooms are set in the building next door so if you want to get to the bar, breakfast are...

The Hotel Canal Grande is in a superb location, just 10 minutes walk from where you get dropped off by the bus from Marco Polo airport. As a previous reviewer has mentioned, this is over 3 bridges (they said 2 but were obviously stunned by the sheer beauty of the place) which can be a problem for elderly or disabled travelers. The only options would be a water taxi direct to the hotel landing stage - but what a wonderful way to arrive! - or a Vaporetto to the next stop (Line 1 towards Lido) which avoids the bridges.

The reception area is small but beyond it is extremely welcoming with excellent decor. The staff were really professional and never without a smile. What a welcome!!! Every request we had - where to eat?, where to go?, can we have a drink even though it is this late?, etc. was never a chore for them.

Our room was amazing with truly authentic Venetian hangings and pictures. It was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was reasonably large and a great shower. The bed was large and very comfortable which is really important to me as I have a bad back.

It is not cheap - but this is not an uncommon comment we heard about anything in Venice. We loved our stay and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems please mention this to the hotel at the time of booking and they will...

We spent five nights at this hotel and had a wonderful time. After the first night we upgraded to a junior suite at a cost of only $30 euros extra per night and it was terrific. Giovanna and the staff were first rate and couldn't do enough for us- from restaurant recommendations to arranging airport transfer. Breakfasts were fine and you could order hot dishes if you liked. WiFi worked fine. The hotel is located in a quiet area but is very convenient to two vaporetto stops. We would definitely stay there again.

I'm hesitant to review this hotel because I want to keep it all for myself. This is a 5 star hotel in a quiet piazza watching the noise and activity of Venice from across the canal. The staff were so nice and helpful, always smiling and offering helpful suggestions of places to visit and little restaurants for dinner ( try Antica Besseta for dinner - nearby but hard to find in the dark). We upgraded our room to a canal view which was lovely. The rooms are beautiful and well equipped. We would have liked tea and coffee making facilities - evidently these will be added soon. We breakfasted on their jetty each morning, starting to get chilly in November but we were blessed with sunny mornings and a hot coffee. If I'm ever back in Venice, I know where I'll be staying :)

I wanted something extraordinary for our one night stay in Venice before boarding our cruise ship and we got it in this hotel. Not far from the train station and right on the Grande Canal you could not ask for a better location. We had a beautiful room with a side terrace that allowed us to experience the sights and sounds of the canal. The bathroom was modern and everything was squeaky clean. The breakfast was beautifully served with views of the canal both inside and out. The staff were so friendly and accommodating and made a suggestion for us to get to the cruise ship that prevented us from having to cart luggage. In addition as I was settling our account at the front desk the phone rang. It was housekeeping telling us we had left our travel documents and passports in the safe. We will be forever grateful. This hotel felt as comfortable as home.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms with a view of the canal.
