We were looking for somewhere to eat near the Rialto bridge and randomly chose Osteria Bancogiro. We were so happy with our choice. They had just started a new menu the day before. I had a melon gazpacho with scallops. The melon was seasoned such that it was more savory than sweet - absolutely delicious. My husband had a cuttlefish ravioli and only wished there were more. Our friend had a carpacio. The mains were equally delicious - fresh octopus, a gnochi, a cold spaghetti with pesto. Dessert topped it all off. I had a watermelon "sushi". The rice element was like a stiff rice pudding and there was a chocolate cardamom sauce. Our waiter, Lorenzo was charming and gave us great service. Highly recommend eating here.

Great food and service, good value. We gave it a try one night and really enjoyed it, went back another night. Also the locaation is amazing, with a wide terrace on the Grand Canal, close to Rialto, so you can enjoy watching the world sail by as you dine. Really freindly owners and staff.

Tourists are fair game in Venice and it's always open season. It is a basic and well tried rule of travel - eat where the locals eat and at what they eat, they don't get fleeced and they know what is good. In Venice all you need to do at lunchtime is to get yourself to the Rialto then go about 200 metres to a little bar in an arcade - the Osteria Bancogiro. You can , if you feel flush, eat at the tables overlooking the Grand Canal but so much more fun to act like a true Italian and eat cicchetti and drink wine at the bar. The wine is surprisingly good for such a cheap price and the cicchetti....there we stray into another rarified world of flavours. Sardines Saor, Brandade of Cod, thin slices of airdried ham, salami and so many more little taste bombs on their bread bases. The jewel in the culinary crown, the acme of flavour, the nearest thing to heaven is the Taleggio cheese bruschetta decorated with a shaving of black truffle. If I close my eyes I'm back there and can almost taste the truffle.
You are going to think - Whoah, this is going to cost ! Wrong. Oh,so wrong. 5 cicchetti, a glass of sparkling water and a glass of decent white wine....how much ? 14 Euros ! A steal. A gift. Enough for two people for 14 Euros for a lunch.
So if your in Venice make like a local. Stand in the lovely little bar with it's friendly staff, a mix of local workers, suits, foreigners and the odd savvy tourist and enjoy a cheap wonderful lunch for a few Euros. Your taste buds will love you forever.

We try to not miss going here when in Venice and this time went twice. The Boncogiro assorted fish plate was worthy both times as was the beef tartar. Fish is their speciality, at least to us. The location is outstanding, directly on the Grand Canal. The cover charge is high but you are paying for that spot. Extensive wine list, just a tad higher than others but fair. Service is excellent and friendly.
