“Avoid the crowds, cliches and high cost of a visit to Venice - this place is superb!”
Reviewed 9 February 2013

I stayed for 5 nights at the Palazzetto da Schio in October 2012, with my two children ages 13 and 10. The beautiful apartment, location and the charming friendships we made with Contessa Anna and her guests were the highlight of our trip. I would recommend this apartment (10 out of 10!) for those who like to travel and experience the "real" people and character of a city and avoid the usual crowds, cliches and high cost associated with tourism. The location in the Salute quarter of Dorsoduro is excellent; close to authentic and unassuming restaurants, nestled close to the Guggenheim and Accademia with a charming "neighborhood" feel (yet you are only a few minutes walk from San Marco). Contessa Anna can help with restaurant recommendations, concert visits and the like. Absolutely superb!

Room Tip: 2 bedroom apartment overlooking the canal - feature is the magnificent 18 century dining table!

We stayed at Palazzetto da Schio for 5 weeks and it really is as wonderful an experience as other reviewers have written. The Contessa could not have been more welcoming and was exceptionally considerate throughout our stay. We stayed in the flat on the top floor overlooking the garden. It was very peaceful and contained lovely furniture.

A real bonus for us was that the original (and very large) kitchen for the Palazzetto is part of this flat and so it is perfect for anyone wanting to try their hand at Italian cooking. On hearing that we liked to cook the Contessa offered to lend us any additional kitchen equipment we might need but there were plenty of utensils, pans and even a food blender so we did not need to take up her kind offer. This is just one example of how thoughtful the Contessa is towards her guests. She is also extremely diligent about looking after guests if there is any possibility of acqua alta (the brief tidal flooding) and offers advice and waterproof wellington boots.

The location is also absolutely perfect and on a very beautiful canal. We can not recommend this accommodation highly enough and would definitely like to return

Superb location in Dorsoduro. Very quiet, romantic and charming. The Contessa is a very nice woman, and extremely knowledgeable as she grew up in this very house (although it sounds like it was much less comfortable when she was a child). We had apt. no. 5, which was spacious. Only quibbles: the aparment is dark, which is not a problem because it stays cooler in warm weather, but there is no good reading light; and the shower enclosure is a curtain loop over the tub, and is a very tight space--the curtain inevitably sticks to one's skin. I found it easier to just kneel in the tub and use the handheld shower head, although it isn't very comfortable if you are six feet tall. The bed was a bit hard, but found the same throughout Italy. Highly recommended.

I am very grateful to my guests who give me good marks and I hope I shall go on deserving them, but I'm sorry when I hear that something was missing to their comfort which could easily be set right.

Difficult to change the mattresses (most people complain of back-ache if they are soft) but very easy to provide a good reading lamp.

One of the advantages of living in the same house as my guests is that they can knock on my door any time, or leave a note if I'm out, and we can try and fix whatever is wrong. Even the problem of the shower curtain can be improved with a little technique that a very ingenious guest taught me.

I cannot add much to the existing reviews other than our gratitude to Anna for making our first visit to Venice so memorable. The apartment is perfect, centrally located, as quiet as we had hoped for, spotlessly clean, and very comfortable. Anna was a pleasure to work with, from our very first email exchanges to the excellent and thorough introduction we received on arrival. Everything was handled is a very professional manner. The location is ideal-away from the mayhem and crowds of other parts of town, with a real neighborhood feel, and still only a five-minute walk from the vaporetto. We look forward to many return visits!

This was a find. There were 6 of us staying at 2 apartments in this well located, quiet and well appointed Palazzetto. The Contessa da Schio was a delightful and informative hostess. We were on the third floor and with carry on luggage, the steps were easily mounted. Might be harder for heavier bags but there are 2nd floor apartments as well. We easily found restaurants nearby and walked or took the vaparetto (water taxi) to everywhere we wanted to go. We would recommend the palazzetto for anyone who wants a quiet home in Venice and who does not need the trappings (room service, exercise room, etc) of a big hotel.

We stayed in apartment no. 4 for 3 nights. The apartment overlooked the canal and was very comfortable and well equipped. We thought the location was fantastic away from the crowds of San Marco but easy to get around. Contessa Anna was very helpful in providing information about the area - restaurants and shopping locally.

The apartment No. 3 in Contessa Anna da Schio’s Palazzetto has been ideal for two couples: To each of the two great bedrooms belongs a small bathroom – great for us - the small kitchen is equipped with everything you might want, even a dishwasher and a washing machine are available as well as a trolley for shopping in the Billa super market and rubber boots for “acqua alta” which, however, we did not need. From the wonderful great living/dining room we had a great look over the nice canal and Venetian roofs over which to our great surprise we sometimes saw a huge cruise liner!

The Contessa explained everything in the apartment and gave us a lot of most welcome information (Venice card, super market, surrounding …) She offered to contact her at any time for any further information required. Just a little something but most welcome: A bottle of mineral water was available upon our arrival and we were given a lovely piece of self-made soap. We really appreciated being taken care of by such an amiable Venetian Contessa. And we felt a little bit ourselves as “Venetians” when we unlocked the front door of “our” Palazzetto!

Since we are very fond of old historical buildings, we have been absolutely delighted with the Palazzetto of the 16th century and the antique furniture. During the last years, the Contessa has restored the old family property and divided it into 5 apartments, always under the strict control of the Monument Authority. She herself lives in apartment No. 1 which can be rented in summer for not less than a month, the other apartments are available for short rents. A lovely little garden belongs to the Palazzetto, open to all guests. Best you have a look at the homepage to get an impression of the wonderful apartments: www.palazettodaschio.it.

A further big advantage is the location which could not have been better: Picturesquely situated on a little canal in the quarter Dorsoduro, we reached the St. Mark’s square in less than 10 minutes by traghetto (gondola ferry) but were far away from tourist hustle and bustle. Dorsoduro is mainly a dwelling zone, very attractive with many churches, museums, places and shops – the ideal place for a stay in Venice!

The Contessa speaks several languages but not German, communication with us was in English language.

We wish to thank the Contessa for a wonderful stay and highly recommend her wonderful Palazzetto!

When I started opening my house to visitors there were very few guests from North of the Alps. The German speaking people seemed to avoid Venice though they flocked down to the sea and to the lake of Garda. Many of them thought that the Venetians were a bit difficult to deal with. Venetians, on their part, also felt a bit wary of the Northern visitors perhaps for old historical reasons. All that is now changed: Germans, Austrians and Swiss have found their way to the lagoon and a feeling of trust and friendship has taken the place of the old grudges: one step forward towards a better Europe! I wish I knew a bit of German to thank my guests properly but, alas, the only thing I can say is "Danke!

Palazzetto da Schio has been my family residence in Venice for a few centuries; the house is XVIth century, and I have completely restored it dividing it into 5 apartments, for myself, my relatives and for my guests.Apt N.1 «PIANO NOBILE» is my own home and it is available for all kinds of parties and receptions.Apt N.2 «TOP FLOOR/WEST» is on the top floor, at the back of the house: the view is very pleasant on the rooftops of Venice and the garden below. It has a bedroom with queen size bed, one bathroom, one sitting room (with a comfortable bed-sofa for a third guest) and a big livable kitchen. Apts N.3 and N.4 «TOP FLOOR/EAST» AND «MEZZANINE-CANAL» are, respectively, on the top floor and on the mezzanine floor. They are available all year round. The plans of these two apartments are very similar: two bedrooms (one with queen size bed, the other with two or three single beds), 2 bathrooms, one sitting room and a small kitchen. The top floor apt. has also a sofa trundle bed for two extra guests. All the rooms are on the front of the house with a very nice view over the canal and plenty of light and sun.Apt N.5 «MEZZANINE-GARDEN» is on the mezzanine floor on the back of the house ; it is very quiet, with a restful view of the garden with its medieval well. It has a bedroom with queen size bed, a living-room with an alcove (elevated from the floor) that has two extra beds, a bathroom and a kitchen. The furniture of all the apartments is mostly antique ranging from the XVII century onwards, but water, gas, electricity and telephone systems are all modern and independent. Each apartment is completely equipped with linen, blankets, kitchen ware, etc.We have Wi-fi Internet connection in the house, free for all the guests. The little garden is at the disposal of all the guests. We are in the Dorsoduro area, very close to the Salute, on Rio della Fornace, which is the second canal joining the Grand Canal to the Giudecca Canal. ... more   less
