Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

“Average square”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2012

It's pretty, it's a square, every city in Europe has one. It was neat that when we walked through at night, several different quartets were playing. Other than that, it really isn't much different, just pretty.

“Large open crowded tourist hot spot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2012

It's really just fun to sit on the steps and people watch or grab a snack at the local pizzeria. The night scene is the best as everything is lit up and the bands are playing lovely Italian music.

“Quite pretty”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2012

Nice square which like everything else in Venice is smaller than I expected. Not as busy as I thought and I can't understand where all the comments about it been expensive come from. We had a very tasty and inexpensive lunch 5mins walk from the square. Unless you're visiting for a particular event I'd only set aside a day for Venice as It's quite small and can be easily covered in a day. We stayed in Verona as we were going to the opera there and got a train to Venice for €11 each and took the slower train back for €7.
Best advice is take the waterbus from the station to St Marks and walk through venice back to the station.

“Piazza San Marco”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2012

Fabulous place to visit at sunset (watch the sun catch the gold leaf on the mosiaccs on the Basilica.) later in the evening listen to the small orchestras of the coffee houses playing (beware the charge to sit outside the coffee houses, they call it a music tax)
but lovely to listen to and move round the square to listen to each orchestra

“Early morning visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2012

Get up early and watch the early morning light across the lagoon, you won't be disappointed. The crowds are still asleep, just the birds to greet you.
