Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

The picture is not what it ever looks like. The plaza is filled with numerous guided tours with everyone wearing headsets. The tour is worthwhile to really understand the history. Look at the clock tower and notice that the numbers are not usual roman numerals, for example. It is really a spectacular place and amazing that so much

Make sure you have time to wander on your own and a boat tour is a good choice to see more and to rest your feet. There is a lot to see not far off of the plaza.

As with any church in Europe, knees are to be covered for both men and women and shoulders for women. It will only cost you a Euro to buy a sheet to wear, but they are cumbersome and people looked uncomfortable wearing them. Also get a bearing on the WC as there are few public toilets and all require payment.

its a pretty spot but be aware that you can't sit in the square as there are security that walk around and ask people to move along.

Dining outside (with a cover charge) watching people was lovely. Do try Cafe Florian! They have a live orchestra (10 pc) as does another cafe on the square. It feels so "Italian" to sip wine and listen to the beautiful classical/easy listening music being played.

A must see place in Venice, if you get there early before it becomes stupid busy you will appreciate the size and grandeur of this remarkable square.
Too many people ignoring the simple request not to feed the pigeons.

We went here several times during our recent stay in Venice. it had a very different atmosphere at night compared to during the day. Earlier it was very busy but you could see all the buildings easily. At night the buildings were lit up and there was classical music to listen to. There are always annoying vendors around. Watch out for pickpockets.
