Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

If you're in a Venice then why wouldn't you visit St a Marks Square? It's busy, full of pigeons but beautiful and elegant. There is outdoor dining here and very lovely indeed, no doubt at a high cost. There are live orchestras in two of the restaurants. They are simply exquisite. It's pretty busy but I guess you kind of expect that. The architecture of the buildings are breathtaking. Everything is pretty expensive. If you walk slightly further away from St a Marks then things get slightly cheaper. There's no shortage of pigeons. I personally avoid them where possible. Well worth a visit.

“Lots to shop and see”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

May be the first area you would want to explore in Venice. The Square is full of life and atmosphere at any time of the day, though the weather is really hot in August and the place is packed full of tourists. This, however, doesn't make it not fun to walk or shop around. The buildings around this square are magnificent and there are many shops full of Venetian masks and Murano glasses. If you walk further along you will find the famous Harry's Bar around the corner. Overall, a great plaza to walk and shop in.

Simple, elegant. Pictures do not do it justice. A very Italian feeling! Outdoor dining available. Some teasing of shopping as you wander the perimeter. Lovely in daytime and at night. Spend a little time there and move along.

“Must see in Venice”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

The picture is not what it ever looks like. The plaza is filled with numerous guided tours with everyone wearing headsets. The tour is worthwhile to really understand the history. Look at the clock tower and notice that the numbers are not usual roman numerals, for example. It is really a spectacular place and amazing that so much

Make sure you have time to wander on your own and a boat tour is a good choice to see more and to rest your feet. There is a lot to see not far off of the plaza.

As with any church in Europe, knees are to be covered for both men and women and shoulders for women. It will only cost you a Euro to buy a sheet to wear, but they are cumbersome and people looked uncomfortable wearing them. Also get a bearing on the WC as there are few public toilets and all require payment.
