It was at first another dark, old churches until one of the priests told us to wait 15 minutes, till 11:30 am. He said they would turn on the lights at that time. WOW! What beauty to see all of the exquisite gold mosaic work to come to life in the cielings and the art work adorning the walls. It was stunning!

The basilica is beautiful and mysterious looking. It's dark but I think that's the way it should be. I didn't like that once your in, (which is free) they charge you to go into the different areas of the basilica. Either make it free or charge one single fee. Also remember that women need there shoulders covered (you can buy a cheap cover going in). A must stop on the Venice list for anybody.

This is a free museum and as a results attacts the largest crowd in the square. The queue was long but moved quickly at 3pm. Queuing begins well before the doors open, if you want to be first aim before 09:30. For 2 euros you can skip the line but this is an online offer only, you cant do this on the day. Despite the many many signs people are still ignoring the no backpacks and exposed skin notices. You will be asked to leave the queue to take your bag to bag drop and lose your place, no matter how long you queued. Covering up is better as flesh coloured wraps are provided by the staff at the entrance, but hot pants and strappy vests still shocked me.
The main seating is cordoned off and cannot be accessed, you follow the guide ropes up the aisle and past the altar and find a small seating section which you can access and sit to enjoy a longer time. This can easily be missed though especially when you fell compelled the keep moving with the weight of the crowd. We paid 5 euros to climb the steps and had great interior and exterior views, I thought this was worth the price and enhanced the overall experience. At first you think its all a painting then closer you realise the mosaics. We also paid 3 euros to see the treasure, a tiny room but some intriguing body parts encased in golden caskets, thigh bones, skulls, etc Not enough information though as to who they belonged to, a guide book or guide or information board would have really made the exhibit more meaningful. There is also a 2 euro charge to get closer to the altar. Overall I wish there was better lighting as the mosaics are very dark and the effect of the gold is lessened. I would love to visit again and see full lighting I imagine its spectacular.
