“Swimming in the rain!”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

Our 'retirement' present to each other was a trip on the Orient Express, culminating in two nights at the unashamed luxury that is this exclusive hotel. Weather wise, it was a very wet weekend; St Marks Square was flooded, walkways were everywhere but the private motor launch just kept on running, shuttling back and forth until the small hours (we were told!).

So, they have this HUGE outdoor swimming pool, kept at 30 degrees C, and despite the rain, I was determined to use it! If the expression 'Mad dogs and Englishmen' was your thought, I have to correct you; that is the midday sun, not a very wet Saturday afternoon. The only song that came to mind was Singing in the rain, suitably amended for the purpose, hence the title of my review! Yes, I was the only one indulging, but I did get a round of applause from both bar staff and customers as I climbed out!

As to the facilities in this five star palace, I cannot fault them. Our room had a jaccuzzi; two televisions (one facing the bed, the other round the corner adjacent to the bar) and a huge balcony overlooking the pool.

We dined in Cips' club (see separate review); had breakfast in the Fortuny restaurant on our first morning and in the bedroom on the second.

I cannot fault it; ambience, indulgence, sophistication.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for chosing our Hotel Cipriani to celebrate your "retirement" .
I really appreciate your comments regarding your stay, it is always a great pleasure for me to receive positive feedback and offer our Guests the best experience, especially when they have something important to celebrate.
Despite the wet weather and the high tide, very unusual for this period of the Season, you have enjoyed Venice and the Cipriani. We have kept the temperature of our swimming pool high, because we knew that some very brave english gentleman could use it for the enjoyement of our bar staff and other customers.
Thank you very much again for sharing your experience and please do not hesitate to contact me directly should you decide to come back to visit us. It will be a great pleasure to welcome you again at the Cipriani with hopefully some more sun...
With best personal regards,

In a few days the Hotel Cipriani will open its doors for the most discerning of Venetian visitors and aficionados of subliminal hotel life. My favourite time to visit Venice is May, before the heaving crowds descend. However, this hotel is a haven whatever time of year-one can dip into the hurly burly of sightseeing, shopping, walking, dining and people watching and then retreat to the gentle pace of Cipriani life and regroup with a Bellini by the pool. Speaking of pools-in case you have not had the privilege, the Cip pool is one of the top ten hotel pools I the world. I cannot wait to dive in.

Room Tip: My favourite is a junior suite poolside-this is perfect for hanging out. Or choose one with a view o...

We arrived with high expectations owing to the hotel's reputation, outlandish rates and decent Trip Advisor ratings but left hugely disappointed. The Cipriani may be a grand old dame, but she's one that is in serious need of some cosmetic surgery: our room was terribly tired, with walls covered in scuff marks made by suitcases and trolleys and furnishings closer to B&Q than V&A quality, which is what we had been expecting (and which is what you get if you stay at the equally extravagantly priced but infinitely more refined Villa Feltrinelli on Lake Garda, for example). Much of the hotel was in the same weary state. Service was slow and apathetic, and the food was nowhere near five-star standard. Check-in and check-out were brusque and impersonal; no-one asked us if we had enjoyed our stay. The pool and surrounding area was beautiful, and the complimentary boat service to Piazza San Marco worked very well. But these positives are not enough to compensate for the other failings. We left feeling as if we had been the victims of a cruel and expensive practical joke courtesy of Orient-Express, from whom one expects a lot better.

Hotel Cipriani is the perfect place to stay when visiting Venice because you are right next to St. Mark's Square with access to all of the hustle and bustle, but you are also secluded on an island, able to relax and enjoy the vacation and down-time. I stay at only the upper eschelon of hotels, and this hotel is right on par with those.

The Hotel has its own dock at St. Mark's Square, where a boat is stationed 24/7, so you never have to wait. The hotel will drive you to the St. Mark's Square whenever you want via a free 5 minute boatride. It docks at the Hotel Cipriani dock, and then you are off to explore Venice. Whenever you are finished, you return to St. Mark's via gondola or your own feet and then board the hotels boat which awaits you at the dock. Then you return to the wonderful hotel and relax poolside, in your room, or at one of the restaurants. The staff were wonderfully pleasant. The food was good, but not exceptional.

My favorite part of this hotel was the fact that it was so secluded and reached by boat, but also so close to St. Mark's Square that you could do a few hours of shopping and then relax poolside as though you were on a beach vacation. It was exactly what I wanted and I wouldn't hesitate staying there next time I visit Venice.

I spent three lovely days At Cipriani this Spring and loved every moment of it. Venice is exquisite in May as are the gardens and landscaping of this historic palace. My suite had old world charm and the service was true "old guard" Italian! i loved every second of this stay and the three minute water taxi ride to St. Marks Square was never a bore watching the myraid of boats and cruise ships coming and going..
The Cipriani is a respite in Venice from the crowds and noise. It was wonderful to sit on my patio having coffee in the mrining overlooking the gardens and Grand Canal of Venice.
The service staff are extremely professional, kind, and go out of their way to make all guests feel welcome! I cannot wait to return and it was worth every penny...

How can I describe perfection? The Cipriani is an unforgettable experience we will long to repeat, extraordinary place. The care to the smallest details is hard to match.
The place to be spoilt. I recommend the amazing pool grill as well as the restaurant overlooking sunset kber Venice. Perfection.

Room Tip: All rooms are, I believe, exceptional, but the ones overlooking the lagoon are unbelievable.

We stayed here for three nights in mid September. We were upgraded to a refurbished Junior Suite on the first floor of the main building. Our room was very close to the hotel entrance where the boats dock. It had a private patio with very dense and tall landscaping. The room had a nice multi-speaker stereo system with an iPod dock. The bathroom was beautiful and the tub had a neck cushion for added comfort. The toilet was too close to the wall and it was hard to fit on it. There was a pop up TV at the head of the bed if you like this type of thing. The couch and chairs looked nice but weren't comfortable. The bed sheets were very starchy also and not comfortable. The service overall was excellent. The two restaurants served great food which was included in the price of the room. We enjoyed Cuban cigars at the pool bar. The views from Cip's Club restaurant of the Lagoon and Venice were worth the price of admission. I especially liked being on an island away from the hordes of tourists invading downtown Venice. Venice today is like a outdoor designer shopping mall. I think this degrades the experience.
