“Great location, hit & miss service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013 via mobile

Booked this for partner's birthday. Arrived just after midday and got told to come back at 2pm, as no rooms ready. Spent a lovely 2hrs in St.Marks square at Cafe Florian, only to be told on returning that the room still wasnt ready. Got in 45mins later and then had to go and find our cases ourselves as they'd forgotten to send them up.
Ate at the restaurant twice and food is pricey, but good, and the staff were great. Less so, the service on the terrace during the day. An unsmiling waiter refused us to order food, claiming the kitchen was closed, then 10mins later took a food order from another table.
The room was small, smelt of drains, and the bed had one tiny pillow each and sheets made of scratchy material...quite bizarre for a hotel that seems to think more of itself.
This place is great for location but you get the feeling from some staff that you're not quite worthy, rather than an eagerness to help and appreciation that customers pay their wages.
Would go back to Venice in a shot, but would definitely consider staying somewhere that made us feel more like guests rather than inconvenient visitors.

We visit Venice usually once a year or so and have stayed at various "top" hotels during our visits. The Monaco was our choice this time as we could book a room overlooking the lagoon. Our arrival in Venice was on a very windy and somewhat wet day. Flooding was a bit of a problem and the Monaco had installed door seals as the water was quite high (waterlogging their outside dining area completely). Nevertheless we were met by the concierge with a minimum of fuss (they're very used to flooding) and made to feel very welcome. Furthermore we were upgraded to a lovely suite overlooking the lagoon and entrance to The Grand Canal. The standard of service was very high and the weather improved after the first day. We also had a fabulous view from the suite of a Venetian Regatta giving the impression of a "Canaletto" style scene (see image below). Everything about this hotel is good - a fairly informal reception, the best restaurant of all the hotels we have stayed at with tables set on the terrace on the Grand Canal (it is a very busy restaurant every night so be sure to book).
We wouldn't have any hesitation whatsoever booking a room here again.

Room Tip: Book a room with a view on the Grand Canal. Don't worry about the bus station of Gondolas moored...

Just back from 4 night stay in room 301. Firstly the location is excellent, the room was silent, the bed very comfortable. No canal view but you don't need one. Venice is full of canals and when there is so much to do you only want to sleep when you get back to the room. That said, the TV is small and only has news channels in English so not used. I agree that the hotel is expensive [1100 euros for 4 nights], so no one really would use the minibar [most hotels have removed them anyway] and the bar and restaurant were empty for the same reason, so cannot comment on them. The wireless internet was free and worked perfectly in our room. Breakfast was included, quality was good but limited on small plates, service excellent and we always had a canal side table with no problems. We found the concierge team superb, friendly and went the extra mile on a number of occasions, sorting out an evening out problem with a gondola company perfectly, sorted a wall socket issue almost instantly, and even searched our room after we checkout for a lost boat ticket. They could not be better. I agree that a bottle of water in the room would be welcome especially as there are no coffee machines in the room. In fact there are always 2 concierges no waiting. Although one could argue that if you can afford to stay there you dont worry about the extras, this is not true in modern times. Many 4 star hotels now have free water and coffee in the rooms and a English movie channels on the TV.
The valparatto water bus service is good but only Line 1 visiting all the major sites on the grand canal is worth using because the interval can up to an hour in the other lines. Visit Murano but don't buy anything there its all in Venice and much cheaper. Dont visit the other islands - Boats too infrequent and not worth the time. Dont bother with the Peggy Guggenheim museum - expensive and pointless. After a while you get fed up with museums - stick to the main ones. We had saw a superb production La Traviata [musicetmusica group] in San Theodor - 40 euros each but the quality of the singing and music just amazing. Finally getting lost is easy as the streets are like a maze - lots of dead ends - rather like in the movie "Death in Venice" so get a good map or learn Italian.

Great location but very pricey for what you get. The reception area is very luxurious, but this was not echoed in the room we had, which had shabby furnishings and a long tear in the carpet. We were in a room at the back, which had the advantage of being quiet, and the bathroom was fine with walk in shower.. no problems there.
The sad bit was the diffident manner of the staff and concierge.on reception .... I felt they looked upon guests as a nuisance when we asked questions, and just part of a long line of people they had to deal with day by day. Yes it might be exhausting dealing with thousands of visitors a year but hey, a smile works wonders.
We didn't eat at the hotel as the prices were beyond our budget, and found that the further way you went from the area, the cheaper the prices were. Be adventurous and don't eat in St Mark's Square area.... just explore side streets... you will be quite safe in early evening and enjoy eating where Italians eat!
Go out early in the morning to explore the area, before the tours arrive, or around 6 p.m. when most have gone back to their hotels. Like other guests we took the "freebie" to Murano Glass factory, but to be honest felt very pressurised, and again could not afford to purchase any.
I would not stay at this particular hotel again, and I am sure there are other hotels which would give a better deal.

If you're staying here, take a water bus (€7 per person as opposed to €65 from train station) and get off at the San Marco Giardinetti stop. It's right next to the hotel, and you'll save money.

We booked a room at the Palazzo Selvadego, a partner of Hotel Monaco Grand Canal. Upon check in, we were told that our hotel was overbooked, and we were to be staying at the Hotel Monaco. Our initial impression was excellent. Impeccable contemporary decorations. Our room didn't disappoint either. Very spacious and modern. Our bathroom also included a simultaneous urinal and scrotal washing station.

We were a little concerned with a prior review of someone who had booked a bed & breakfast room at the Palazzo Selvadego, was transferred to the Hotel Monaco, and the B&B wasn't honored. This did not happen to us. They honored it and we didn't have to pay the €25 price. If we come back to Venice, we would certainly consider staying here again.

On the plus side the location is perfect, the rooms are clean and decorated well. The breakfast was also good, pleasantly surprised you could get a cooked breakfast and pot of tea or coffee. However, there were no tea making facilities in the rooms, and not even a couple of complimentary bottles of water. The restaurant, which is open to the public, is also extremely expensive, €35 a head without a drink! No doubt the food is good, and the view amazing from the waterfront seating, but unaffordable for a normal family of 6 for three nights. Also there was no outside space for residence just to sit. If you wanted the view it was made quite clear you had to buy a drink or meal. Tea was about €5. So you pay for a hotel overlooking the canal, but you can't see it. All of our rooms overlooked the streets, I could see the water if I climbed on a chair and stuck my head out the window sideways! Also if you go as a family with separate rooms make it really clear when you book you want rooms together. we were on separate floors. The staff were polite, but looked pretty miserable and didn't interact with you unless they had to. Information was not forthcoming, and you had to ask to find out anything. Language was not really a problem, but instructions were not always clear depending whom you spoke to. We took the free boat offered by the hotel to Murano glass factory. This was fine and we were not pressured to buy, but perhaps they could see from our clothes that we didn't have the €500 for the cheapest plate! Our advice is to eat out at one of the little cafes away from San Marco Square, and buy water and some bottles of Bellini to drink in your room. We got two bottles for €15 at one shop. Oh and don't forget to factor in the city tax, which will be sprung on you as you check out, €12 each.
If the hotel reads this my advice is be a bit more friendly, especially to families with children, and a small welcome pack with a bit of information, and a couple of bottles of water in the room for hot, weiry travellers when they arrive would go a long way.

Our first Venice trip and we were pleased to realize our original boutique hotel had overbooked and placed us at the Monaco. We thought we hit the lottery; steps away from the St Marks, the grand canal, a gondola station and waterbuses. Surprise! Aside from the first impression of the lobby, all other great impressions remained outside the door of this place. With a family of 4, I was not about to pay 25 euros pp for the limited breakfast. The rooms were all run electronically with the room key card. Catch22; if there was no keycard in the wall slot, the outlets wouldn't function, so we had to budget our time to charge phones, cameras, etc.

My kids had to loiter in the halls to get a strong enough signal for WiFi. Final day of stay I had a hard time placing a call to my airline from the room. The concierge "offered" to patch me through. Upon check out that little favor of a 3 minute call had cost me 40 euros without a warning. With enough bickering it was lowered down to 20 euros. Any time I had a question regarding transport or sights, I felt like I always caught the staff in a bad mood. Our rooms faced the alley street with high end stores. Little did we know that once the stores closed, the knock off salespeople took over and during the late hours, they were loud.

Will I visit Venice again, definitely... The Monaco... Flat out, No!

Room Tip: Get a room facing the Canal. You don't want the chatter of pedestrians and street salesppl
