“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 20 January 2014

Taking the watertaxi from the train station .... At first we got lost, and with way to much luggage it was a problem. It took us 1 hour to find the hotel but once we got there ... WOW! And now we know to take a water taxi the next time. The room was lovely, Breakfast next to the Grand Canal. Nice walk to San Marco Square lots of beautiful shops along the way. We enjoyed the bar ( on the terrace) in the late afternoon ... Champagne and a view ... AMAZING. Even had a wedding there one afternoon, was fun watching the guest & Bride arrive.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a view of the Grand Canal

Beautiful gorgeous hotel. We had a room overlooking the Grand Canal which was just perfect. Very expensive though - we had room service the first night we got there and I just had a bowl of vegetable soup and my partner had a burger and chips (not very original I know) no wine or water (luckily we bought our own from the shop down the road) and it cost 74 euros. Two gin and tonics and campari and orange juice 57 euros in the bar. Breakfast was a big big let down however and if I had been served that in a bed and breakfast I probably would have found it acceptable but in a five star hotel no thanks. There was lots there just no substance and all looked very unappetising. We were also disappointed that we had mosquitos in our room in January!!! and got bitten quite badly so watch out. I understand what people say in other reviews about the staff being a little aloof. They did not seem that bothered whether you were staying there or not. However, the hotel is in an amazing location a minutes walk from San Marco Square and from the fabulous shops. I had been to Venice as a little girl so was excited about going again. We had a great time in Venice but probably would not go again. I did feel as I was being ripped off as prices were so high everywhere. Go to all the little side streets to get a better deal and mix with the locals.

Room Tip: Definitely a Grand Canal facing room but beware the mosquitos even in Winter

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your visit at The Westin Europa & Regina. We are happy you enjoyed our great location but on the other hand, we are sorry we have not lived up to all your expectations, specifically with your room dinner and our the buffet breakfast.
Of course your comments will be shared with our F&B manager.
As far as mosquitos are concerned, despite efforts to mitigate this irritable inconveniences with repellant sprays and regular disinfestation programs, unfortunately this id due by the warm temperature of this winter.
Should you come back to Venice, we hope to having you again with us in order to restore your faith in The Westin Europa & Regina by ensuring you receive a true Westin experience.

I have stayed here several times while growing up, and now as I have a permanent base on the Giudecca I only return to the Europa for drinks or dinner. The Hotel sits within one of the busiest Sestieres of the city, but upon entering, all the bustle of S. Marco disappears into the cool, elegant marble of the foyer.

The bar itself - Bar Tiepolo - is gorgeously laid out with the lavish flair typical of classic Venetian decor. If it is warm enough, go outside onto the terrace where you are struck by the magnificence of the Maria della Salute, seemingly floating on the Grand Canal, her enormous white domes particularly glorious at sunset. The drinks menu is a delight, with the Bellinis being a highlight. Drinks arrive in beautifully etched glasses accompanied by delicious nibbles. The service is impeccable. When in Venice, there are few places better for an evening aperitivo.

We spent 3 nights here on New Year's Eve and what a place to stay. I was lucky to book this as a mystery hotel through hotwire.com. We stayed in 2 deluxe, partial canal view rooms. The rooms were large, clean, nicely furnished in blue and white linens and the beds were very comfortable. Lovely marble bathrooms with a bath and shower. it was the end of a 6 week Europe holiday and a great way to finish. A couple of things. We arrived into Venice by train and decided to take the water taxi at 60euro it was pricey but a magnificent way to arrive, as The Westin has it's own pier and the walk from the waterbus stop would have been a pain. Just do it, it's the best way to know you're somewhere very special. BTW the cost for the water taxi to the airport afterwards was euro110. Again the easiest way to go. When we arrived at the hotel our taxi driver helped unload us from the water taxi but there was no help or sign of hotel porters, it seems this area may be unmanned. It would be good if they could keep an eye on arrivals as we would have really appreciated assistance at this point, we waited quite a while and then I decided to try to find reception. I think the hotel was full, due to NYE and they were hosting a large ball.(could explain the lack of welcome) There were a couple of minor things unfinished in our room when we checked in but not enough to be concerned with and had they worried me I would have called reception. The mini bar was empty, and there was no complimentary water. It was fixed on our last day. These things didn't bother me in the least..I was in Venice! The location can't be beat. A stone's throw from St Mark's square and easy walking to so many shops and restaurants. You just step out the door and walk around Venice easily, each time you turn a bend there is something even more delightful to see. We didn't eat at the hotel, but the restaurant looked very nice (on the canal) My husband used the gym, he said it was compact but nicely equipped.
The lavish use of marble in the reception and lobby area was spectacular. I would say this used to be a magnificent palazzo.
This was supposed to be a trip of a lifetime but if I could stretch to Venice again I would definitely choose this hotel. It was fantastico!

Room Tip: If your budget stretches to the canal view do it- but if not don't worry- You'll only sleep...

On arrival after a long walk from Piazza Roma (which was great and well worth doing) we finally found the Europa. Reception is just inside the front door but no staff were in attendance and there was no bell. There were 3 concierges across the way that could quite clearly see us but no one bothered to help. Eventually after 10 mins of being ignored I asked a concierge where we checked in, he said at reception, only when I said there was no one there did he bother to call anyone!

When we finally got checked in the lady was lovely and helpful and the process was quick and easy. Our room was simply stunning with a fabulous view out onto the canal that I could have just sat and watched all day.

The room its self was clean and modern with some nice traditional features and a glass chandelier. The bathroom was all marble with a bath and separate shower and lots of toiletries which could not be faulted. The air conditioning did not work and there was no explanation why and although the windows opened a little they did not fully open (for safety reasons I guess) and it was hard to cool the room. I should also mention the Westin heavenly bed which my husband HATED with a passion, it rolled him out constantly and did not seem to be made for a tall, 16 stone guy. He said it was some of his worst nights sleep ever, which we really didn't expect for all their promises of fabulous beds!!!

We did not use the concierge service apart to ask had the confirmation from our water taxi company come but they generally seemed to look down on us and have a false air of grandeur about them. I thought they were there to help but it really appears not!!! It was only on out last day that head snotty finally managed a Buongiorno!

The view at breakfast was stunning and it is worth the 35 euro price tag for that alone. breakfast was good with a large choice of items but both Hubbie and I felt it was a little lacking somehow but couldn't put our finger on it. There was plenty of tea and coffee brought to the table in silver pots loads of juice choices and smoothies too! There was prosecco too if you so desired. There was a small hot American style section with sausage, egg, bacon and potatoes. Lots of bread and pastries and ham and cheese cereals and fruit.

We had dinner in the restaurant and this was excellent see separate review for that but I really would recommend trying it.

We left by water taxi and it was a really convenient way to leave for an early flight, the taxi company simply faxed the concierges with a collection time and sure enough he was on the hotels dock when we were! We booked this through venice link and not the hotel and it was 95 euros which was really good value.

The location could not be faulted and was within easy walking distance from all the main sights. We popped into St marks square when it was quiet, one morning before breakfast, which I would recommend. This is one of those hotels that could so easily have been rated excellent if they sorted a few niggles out.

Room Tip: The view of the Grand Canal from the room is superb!

We had a fantastic experience at the Westin. The location is fantastic and by European standards good value. A short walk from St marks Sq. Would definitely stay here again.

Canal facing room would be good but as we only stayed a night will save that for next time.

The hotel is perfectly located - I would stay in the same area again!
I do recommend arriving by the private water taxi - its expensive (110 EUR for 2 adults w. 2 bags) but was such a fun journey, only took us 20 minutes and you arrive at the private dock of the hotel. Going back we took the public water bus - much cheaper at 15 EUR each, but takes about 90 minutes,,,
The room was clean and comfortable - no complaints although we weren't blown away considering its a 5 star hotel.
Bar very expensive - 11 Euros for a tea...
We were however very disappointed with the service. Not friendly staff AT ALL. We had problems with the wifi and they came across as irritated with us for even asking for help. We never had the evening turn down service even though it was advertised, and when we asked reception for the location of the water bus stop upon checkout the lady said she couldn't help us...
Overall I would say the hotel was nice enough, great location but poor service...
