“Both convenient and quiet”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2014

The dorsoduro location was great for exploring the city but still having a quiet spot to relax. The hotel is basically in between the Zattere and Accademia vaperetto stops so it is easy to get around Venice. It is just off the main route in between Accademia and the Guggenheim.

The rooms are cozy sized, but comfortable and clean. The breakfast was decent and the staff was friendly (but be sure to follow the rules:)

There is a fridge in the room, and a place nearby that sells pizza by the slice if you need a quick afternoon snack. Nico gellateria near the Zattere stop is also a winner.

The location was pretty good. It was on one of the little canals and did have access to a water taxi. (about 30 min to airport and costs about $110) There is no elevator, but that didn't bother us, if you aren't able to go up stairs, then Venice is not for you! The front desk people were nice and would help us out when needed. Free breakfast was great! we had it every day with complimentary espressos and cappuccinos. Venice is like a labyrinth and this hotel was easy to find since it was near Accademia which there were signs for directions everywhere. Free wifi worked very well and front desk had adapters for electronics. ok now for bad stuff:
- Its spring time now and Venice does not use air conditioning for this time. Weather was nice, so it wasn't too big of a deal BUT we had to leave window open all the time or else it would get stuffy and mosquitos were a major issue. By the end of our week stay, we must have each had 25+ bites and some were little like flea bites. This only happened while we slept.

- the shower is ridiculous! Im not sure if its like that in every room or not. There is no curtain nor a sliding door. I'm 5'4, not big at all and I could barely move in it. My hubby is 6'3 and Im not sure how he managed. You have to aim the shower into the wall so it does not spray all over the bathroom. The floor of the tub/shower was also not flat, but had weird lumps (but it was built that way)

- There is some kind of tax in Venice per person per night. ours came out to about 35 euros for 6 nights so thats not too bad but they only take cash for this. This was a hassle since we were leaving and my husband had to run to an ATM to get money out and front desk doesn't have change!

- Now, I did mention that location was good for finding the hotel in this crazy beautiful labyrinth of a city, but from our room, we could hear the noisy ally all night long, mostly americans. And first thing in the morning like around 7am the hotel or the building next to us would wash the ally and make tons of noise with pots and pans and there was a baby that cried all the time, but I'm not sure if that would be different in any other hotel considering how close everything is to each other. Our room faced the side alley, next time, we would go directly to hotel (which they give discounts if you do) and request a room facing canal.

All in all the stay here was average. The price was not bad. The service was pretty good and the breakfast was great. If someone asked me where to stay in Venice for a decent price, I would recommend this place.

Room Tip: Make sure you check the weather and find out if they are using A/C. Mosquitos are a HUGE problem esp...

We spent 3 nights at the end of March 2014 at this lovely hotel. Don’t be put off by the odd name for this wonderful hotel located on a quiet calle just off the Grand Canal. It is a 5 min walk from the Accademia Vaporetto stop and luggage-manageable with a little energy. It’s a 30 min vaporetto ride from the Santa Lucia train station, which allows views of the major palazzi along the Grand Canal. Our room overlooked the small side canal which was a little noisy in the morning (7-8 AM) with workmen, deliveries, and garbage collection but it was quiet and scenic and on balance worth a few more euros. The room overall and the bathroom were certainly adequate in size and nicely furnished. Breakfast buffet was ample and good. The Dorsoduro location is excellent, just a 15 min walk to Piazza San Marco, and short walks to Santa Maria della Salute and the Giudecca Canal with lots of waterfront activity along the Fondamenta during the day. We would gladly stay here again if returning to Venice in the future.

We stayed at the American Dinesen for five nights in March and had a wonderful stay in Venice. We booked a superior room with a view, directly with the hotel. Our corner room on the second floor had views on two sides over the San Vio Canal and down to the Grand Canal which was a wonderful sight to wake up to each day and well worth paying the extra for. The room was a good size, traditionally decorated with silk wall coverings, a very comfortable bed and the added bonus of tea and coffee making facilities and free wifi. The bathroom, whilst small, had everything you needed plus a very efficient hairdryer (important!) and plenty of toiletries restocked daily. The room and all areas of the hotel were cleaned to a high standard. The staff throughout the hotel were friendly and helpful. The location is ideal being minutes away from the Accademia vaporetto stop and bridge to cross to walk to St.Marks Square (15 mins) and the Rialto. The Dorsoduro is a lovely area to explore with plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel. One of the highlights of our trip was a performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons by Interpreti Venezia at the San Vidal Church, just over the Accademia bridge, tickets easily booked through the hotel. The performance was magical. We absolutely loved Venice and felt that we had chosen the perfect area to stay in and were delighted with our choice of hotel. We would certainly recommend it to friends and family and would return.

Room Tip: Corner rooms with views of the canal are worth it.

They really over do the air freshener and it all but choked me. We checked in on the late afternoon of the 24th and the front desk guy was surly and seemed annoyed however the bellman (Mario??) was very nice and helpful. We where hungry after traveling for 17 hours, so we asked the hotel where we could get a bite to eat. They said everything was closed and would not open for a while. The surly desk attendant recommended the place next door. DO NOT GO THERE!! It's a tourist trap and we ended up spending $110 on just 2 people. The food wasn't even that good. Our room didn't have a great view but it was the perfect time of year to sleep with the window open. The room was small with a very firm bed and had a small bathroom but it was cute and worked for us. The location is quiet but you will walk a few minutes to get anywhere. If you get lost just ask people how to get to the academia bridge it's a great point of reference. The breakfast was very good and I really enjoyed it

Dear Mrs Jacqueline T,

thanks for submitting your review about our Hotel. We truly regret to hear that the service provided by our staff did not lived up to your expectations. Please note that most of the restaurants in Venice are closed between lunch and dinner and the next door Restaurant Cantinone Storico, which is normally quite good, it's the only Restaurant , nearby our Hotel, open at that time of the day. Obviously there are many bars in the area open in the afternoon, but the kind food is different. In any case Restaurants always show their menu with pricelists so you may have an idea of the price range before ordering, which of course may vary depending on the drinks and plates selected.
Hoping to welcome you back in the next future, we remain at your disposal

Kind Regards

Hotel American Dinesen

Sitting on the balcony we waved at friends in London watching us on the webcam (see their website for the link.) They were jealous - and rightly so!
We paid the extra for a canal view (room 210) and it was well worth it. It overlooks a little canal which joins the Grand canal which you can also see, and a little bridge and a few shops. In the morning you could watch the gondoliers below having a fag and phone call while waiting for customers; at night the Grand canal was magical. The room was comfortable and spacious with loads of storage and a bath as well as shower. And we had a kettle and tea and coffee - you don't see that often in continental Europe. Occasionally when we returned to the room there was a slightly odd not too pleasant smell - it wasn't the canal as it disappeared when we we opened the balcony doors, but that was the only downside. I can only repeat what everyone else said about the lovely staff, atmosphere, breakfast, good value, convenient yet quiet location etc. I'm a bit upset I never saw the famous dog but maybe it had gone off on its own holidays. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Our corner room 210 was the nearest to the Grand Canal which was nice. No problem to walk up 2 fligh...

Pros:
- Clean, classically furnished room (equipped with a Venetian glass chandelier).
- The bedding is firm, but very comfortable.
- Some might find the rooms small, as was our first impression upon opening the door. That impression quickly disappeared and we found the room practical with plenty of closet space.
- Public areas of the hotel are warm and welcoming with a breakfast room that would make an attractive full time restaurant.
- Hotel is located on a quiet canal between the Accademia Gallery and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in a neighborhood with easy access to restaurants and other attractions, but far enough away from the crowds and noise of San Marco.
- Vaporetto stops were a short walk away.
- Rooms have wi-fi and there is a computer terminal available in the lobby area for guests’ use.
- Prevention of sound transmission between rooms was good.
- The complementary breakfast buffet was outstanding with many choices of items and tended by a polite, friendly and efficient waitstaff.
- There is plenty of hot water and good water pressure (and the tap water is quite good).
- Towel warmers are provided.
- The hotel’s many attributes are crowned by its friendly, helpful staff, many of whom are English speakers. All staff members are patient in dealing with guests who may have difficulty with the Italian language.

Cons:
- While the room décor provides for attractive lighting, I would have preferred some brighter lighting for reading.
- As in hotels in other cities in Italy, the bathroom is a step up from the floor of the room. At night, the room is quite dark as there are wooden shutters on the windows, and the bathroom step could prove to be hazardous. I would recommend purchasing a 220v night light for the bathroom.
- The bidet in the bathroom takes up valuable floor space making the bathroom smaller than it needs to be.
