“Great night out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

Had a great night here. The theatre itself is beautiful and it just seems to be a night out that is in tune with the island.

Even if you're not an opera fan consider it.

p.s. make sure you dress nicely!

“Wonderful renovation, beautiful sound”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2014

This recreation of the historical La Fenice Opera House (which burned down in 1996) is wonderful. The interior is enchanting and the opera itself that I saw (La Boheme) was absolutely perfect. Tickets are expensive, but it's worth it. Go and you won't be disappointed.

“Better experience than La Scala”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2014

The theatre is much smaller than La Scala in Milan, but the seating seems better organized. There were only four seats in our box and the two people in the second row seemed to be able to see the stage just fine. The stalls area is quite small. The shape of the theatre is distinctly horseshoe rather than U-shaped, so boxes nearer to the stage have a more difficult angle of vision and may miss action occurring on one side of the stage. The restoration after the 1996 fire is just fine in my opinion, leaving the theatre looking opulent without being tackily over the top. The acoustics are good as well, although the orchestra played too loudly and drowned out the singers at the start of our opera - often a problem in a smaller house with younger conductors. Besides the main auditorium the rest of the inside is less remarkable. The audience were smartly dressed but formal evening wear is not necessary. Ladies in long dresses were few and far between, but certainly not out of place. For fans of classical opera or ballet it is certainly worth seeing a performance at La Fenice at least once in my opinion.

“An experience never to be forgotten!”

Modern feel to a great Opera (Madam Butterfly) - great to have subtitles above the stage so that you could follow the story. A must in Venice!

If you like beautiful buildings, and especially if you've read 'The City of Falling Angels' then a tour of La Fenice is an amazing experience, just for seeing the auditorium and being able to sit in the royal box. The Apollo rooms were also a nice surprise.
There is a cafe also, so if you missed breakfast and went straight there, that is a very welcome discovery.
La Fenice is open for tours outside of rehearsal time. We paid for the audio guides, but if you just want to experience the auditorium you don't need to get these. I also paid the €3 for the photo pass so you can take photographs without being fined (I thought it was well worthwhile.)
