Ateneo di San Basso

Attraction details
Owner description: The church of Ateneo of San Basso was built in 1076 in honor of San Basso and is one of the oldest churches in Venice. After the fires of 1105 and 1661 the church was built again. The simple elegance and classic admired today is probably attributable to Baldassarre Longhena, who worked at the time at the Basilica of San Marco. In the XIX century the church was robbed of its altar and its decorations and in the years to come was first sold to a private and later transformed into a laboratory for marbles and sculptures. In the fifties of the '900 the building was rebuilt and adapted to the conference room. The Ateneo of San Basso is now deconsecrated former church located in the heart of Venice, Piazzetta dei Leoncini, to the left of the Basilica of San Marco. Since its reopening in 2002 is considered one of the most important cultural centers of the city.

“Music Excellent, Venue Not So Much”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2012

We attended the Vivaldi El' Opera performance, at the Ateneo di San Basso, while in Venice recently. The music was outstanding. The musicians of the San Marco Chamber Orchestra and soloists were passionate and gifted. Despite this it was not a pleasant evening. The concert hall is a flat rectangle with folding chairs crammed onto the floor area. The chairs were very uncomfortable and so close together that it was hard to even cross your legs! It was nearly impossible to see the performers as there were so many heads between yourself and the stage. My back hurt so bad that about halfway through the performance I just wanted it to be over! Great music, but a very uncomfortable evening.

When the concert was over and we walked through San Marco Square we discovered that two cafes, with outdoor seating, had dueling orchestras. That was entertaining!!

“Virtuoso musicians but the venue is wanting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2012

On our first night in Venice, we decided to take in the San Marco Chamber Orchestra for a performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. We could not have made a better choice. I was astounded by the skill and obvious passion of these musicians for the music. My only issue was with the venue, Ateneo di San Basso. Although a nice, historic venue in beautiful Piazza San Marco, the acoustics were just plain awful. The sound of the orchestra (a six piece ensemble composed of four violinists, harpsichord, viola and bass), was in constant competition from what I can only guess was the sound of an air conditioning condenser unit. In quieter moments, it was like the sound of a jet plane approaching. My husband wasn't bothered by it, but it kept me from enjoying many parts of the concert.

In the end, I would recommend it as the music was excellent. I would hope the operators of the venue will eventually do something about the noise.

“Vivaldis Four seasons all in one night!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2012

I pre booked this concert for our recent trip to Venice and only found it by chance by recognising the alley sign from the other end ' Calle di San Basso' as prior to our trip we could not seem to find its exact location. For those not aware or having difficulty locating it it is right opposite the side entrance to St. Marks Basilica. It is also used during the day for storing rucksacks and extra bags for those visiting St. Marks.

During the evening it is used for a concert performance for the Venice chamber music orchestra either VIvaldi's four seasons or Opera by Mozart.

The performance lasts just over 1 hour and is absolutely fantastic although I wish it had been longer.. The acoustics of the hall are very good. The seats are adequate but after an hour they are a bit uncomfortable. It is good value in my opinion at Euro 25. See photo to help you recognise the building.
