This was our 4th trip to Venice. We usually stay in the Hotel Antiche Figure which is next door to the Carlton but they were fully booked.
Arrival is a piece of cake and is in a great position from the bus station and train station, so easy to find. (Other hotels in Venice can be a nightmare to find)
Smooth early check in, helpful staff. POrter took us to our room which, unlike other reviewers, was spacious, spotless and the bathroom was a great size. No view, it was in the side street but we didn't mind nor paid for that.
There was some mosquitos in the room and we spend half an hour hunting them down. We asked the cleaner to keep the windows closed and she did and also left us a can of spray to kill them!
Breakfast was average, continental stuff was ok. Scrambled eggs were not very appetising and the bacon....well, I didn't touch it, the look was enough.
The roof terrace is lovely to sit and the bar staff were friendly, as were most of the staff.
Bed was large but was very hard, more than a few nights and you would know about it.
Our major gripe was that the air conditioning gets switched off end of September and the towel rail was permanently blasting out heat. We were far, far too hot.
Come check out, the girl didn't even offer a thank you or goodbye but it went smoothly enough.

Room Tip: Room 268, no complaints.

Hotel was easy to find & check in was simple & quick (Taxes are charged per night additionally per person as standard in all Venice).
Our room was a deluxe, the room size was fairly average there wasn't room to swing a cat but we could get in & out of bed comfortably enough & there was room for our cases too, as well as a dresser. No drawers just one small wardrobe. The decor was quite 'traditional venetian' and very busy with deep red patterns. No iron or presser in room but service offered at additional cost, hairdryer included in bathroom. Bath/shower was quite small. Bed was pretty comfortable and sizeable though which was important to us.
Free wifi in reception & lounge area was handy. Continental Breakfast (included) was quite nice & a nice selection plus there was scrambled egg and bacon too.
Hotel was within walking distance to shops and restaurants, 5 mins walk from the bus station and there were a few water bus stops around within 5 minute walk too so good location.

It is a four star hotel, but I found it inferior to ones I stayed at in Rome and Florence. I have never stayed in Venice before, so I don't know how it compares to others. It has a nice location on the grand canal across from the train station. Like everything else in Venice, it is in older building, which results in some limits.

However, there are quite a few irritations, which likely have nothing to to with the age of the building. The worst is that around 5:30 PM, the TV comes on automatically beeping like a serious alarm and showing an advertisement. It is necessary to turn it off (twice!) after realizing that there is no emergency.

Other irritations:
* only one key for the room
* the hair dryer shuts off on its own fairly soon, so it has to be turned on and off again to get the job done
* no Kleenex in the room
* no place to put toiletries in the bathroom
* only absorbent towels are bath towels, not hand towels
* room was hot (in October), but no air conditioning available
* left window open to cool room, and some mosquitoes got in since no screen
* Internet available only in the lobby (but may be due to age and layout of hotel)

In short, not what I expected in an expensive four star property. I don't know anything about similar ones, but there have to be better choices.

Room Tip: Rooms on first and second floors will be cooler than ones on third floor during months when air conditioning is not available.

We came to this hotel with high expectations. The place looks great but it is really expensive had no air con which I'd in the room and has a really small tv and no instructions as to get at least sub titles. The breakfast is not that good. The buffet is laid out and left open so the scrambled egg is cold and was under cooked the whole 3 days we were there. The selection was very limited and not satisfactory at all . To eat at the Hotel is a fortune and you don't get much for the money. The location however is great

We stayed 3 nights in a superior double with grand canal view room. The location is great situated on the grand canal and being close to major landmarks it makes it easier to find your way home (most people get lost in the laneways of Venice at some stage). The view of the Canal is great and although it is quite busy during the day it does become nice and quiet after 10 pm. It was very relaxing having a drink at night and enjoying the view after a long day looking at the attractions.
The Hotel could use a freshen up in some areas and is expensive compared to U.S./Asia hotels but you expect to pay for such a great location.
I'd recommend spoiling yourself and getting a private speedboat to/from the airport. The boat stops directly at the hotel and a staff member was there to assist with our bags before we could get off the boat. The boat ride through the canal to get you to the Hotel is amazing and will start the trip on a high.
The Hotel is a decent walk to the main square but you'll love the walk through the laneways and shops.
