“Nothing to shout about at this supposed 4 Star hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

Having just returned from a 7 night stay at the Carlton, I thought that I would offer my impression of the stay.
The room my wife and I were allocated was small, stuffy and tired looking, no air con and worst of all no space to unpack our clothes, just one single wardrobe to accommodate two large suitcases with our clothes , when we complained we were told that all 145 rooms had the same single wardrobe,we had to live out of our suitcases for the week, very poor for a hotel of this supposed standard.
In general the hotel is located in a very good position, that is the only positive recommendation that I could give, the reception staff showed no interest in resolving any problems that we experienced, such as staff rearranging the tables and chairs on the rooftop area, which happened to be directly above our bedroom, at 5 am in the morning, disbelief that it happened was the reaction by the reception.
All in all our impression was that this hotel was used to dealing with tour groups staying for one or two nights and had little interest in anything else,if you are considering booking a short stay with no luggage then it is a reasonable place to stay, other than that and for anything longer, go elsewhere, there are better hotels in this beautiful city.

We booked a room through Expedia with their other location – Hotel Capri but at the time of arrival their informed us that we were “upgraded” to the Carlton. Of course, nobody cared to inform us about this “upgrade” prior to our arrival. The room was small and very stuffy. A/C was not working. The room was semi-clean and rather run down. In the morning the cleaning lady was so eager to clean that she didn’t care if we were in the room, it was our check-out morning but she didn’t wait until we checked out and was disturbing our packing with cleaning. Breakfast was very good, location is excellent and that’s all about pros. I stayed there one night and quickly moved to another, much nicer hotel (check out my other recommendation from Venice).

As a hotel in general the experience was excellent, but it proved a wonderful choice for an observant, modern-orthodox couple:

1) all doors are mechanical, which was great for Shabbat: no automatic doors to get into the hotel (contrary to many hotels, some of them closer to the Jewish ghetto and often chosen by Jewish travelers; not sure how our friends made it back to the hotel from shul). Also, no card but a simple key to open your room.

2) The hotel is a 10-15 minutes' walk to the kosher restaurant, Gam Gam, where we ate almost every day, and to the synagogue. Both are in the ghetto (FYI "ghetto" means "foundry" and is used very naturally in Venice).

3) Also, the small fridge in our room happened to have no light, which was great for shabbat (not sure if it's standard).

4) Not specifically Jewish-related: location was great for us, within walking distance of the train station / bus station (in other words we took a bus from the airport and then walked for 10 minutes with just 2 bridges to cross), very close to a main bridge crossing over the Grand Canal, and with Vaporetto (boat-bus) stations to get everywhere (including Murano): in other words, though we were not in the typical center of San Marco, etc., it was a great choice for a week of visiting and enjoying ourselves, and with less tourists.

5) Depending on whether/what you eat in non-kosher hotels, you'll enjoy the (non-kosher) very nice breakfast served at the hotel.

My husband and I were staying here since we were with the Gate 1 tours and this was our first stop of our tour. We spent two nights here and the front desk was friendly and polite when we had several questions.
We were given Room 201 and took the small elevator which has room for a small amount of luggage. This room was on a corner hall all by its self with no surrounding rooms, so quiet in that respect. It was hard to maneuver around the small room with luggage. There was a closet with a safe beside the bathroom. The bathroom was also small with a step-up and a glass door and a small shower. The beds were firm and the yellow wallpaper was a vintage fabric on the walls. The heat was still on in our room but we cut it off and left our window open at nights.
A breakfast buffet was included in our tour and was plentiful and delicious but the eggs and bacon are "soft cooked." Coffee is delicious!
A plus is that you are right across from the train station and we watched a lot of traffic coming and going up and down the canal from the roof-top restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter away from the busy canals.

We stayed here for 4 nights for our honeymoon in March/April 2014 and came away overall disappointed. While the outside of the hotel has great appeal and looks right onto the Grand Canal, the inside is very dated and the staff could be much more helpful.

Even though the hotel had been informed by our travel agent this was a honeymoon, there was no welcome or any of the usual "pleasantries" associated with a honeymoon. The room we were given was tiny (barely room to walk around the double bed or fully open a suitcase), and looked into a narrow alleyway. When I pointed out that this was a honeymoon trip to the duty manager I was given a gruff reply that "everyone is on honeymoon these days and there is nothing we can do". Granted the room was kept clean and the bathroom was fine (apart from the odd placement of the towel rail inside the shower curtain), the Venetian quilted wallpaper and carpet looked very faded. The first few nights were quiet with a decent night's rest, but the last night turned out quite noisey between the alleyway and noise from the canal.

The breakfasts were good continental style buffet affairs with good service from the waiting staff, but we decided against paying for what to us seemed very non-Italian offerings at dinner, choosing to head across town in search of more authentic looking fare.

While the location is very good for the bus and train stations, it does mean a lot of walking to the main tourist sights around St Marco. While we didn't mind walking a lot, older or less fit visitors would find they would need to budget for quite a lot of use of the vaporetto waterbus or private taxis, or leave a lot of time for the walk across town.

Based on experience of 4 star hotels in the UK and Malayasia I didn't feel this was at the same standard as any others I have stayed in before.

Room Tip: The "Superior Double Room" is tiny so I wouldn't like to imagine what the basic "...

This was my second visit to Venice and I LOVE the city. At first i was disappointed when I read the tour was putting us in a hotel away from Piazza San Marco. But I loved where it was -- right on the Grand Canal (across from the train station & water taxi stop). There is lots to see and do around the hotel, but it is a lot less crowded. We could wander around and see few people -- mostly locals. So peaceful and picturesque.

You can taxi from hotel to Piazza San Marco, but the walk is easy and so photogenic.

The staff was very friendly. The maitre d' was superb.

The room was small (so was the elevator). The bathroom was smallish too. We did not care so much about the room because we wanted to be out wandering the canals.

Room Tip: We had no view. You can ask for a room with a view but I assume you will pay more.

Every thing was clean and the beds were good. It was hard to maneuver around the small room with luggage. The breakfast was included and was good. If you want good Italian food, don't go to the ones on the beaten path. The quality is not terrific and the prices are really high.
