Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal

Location is great... Just across from the train and bus stations and and easy walk to get a cab to the airport. Everything else about the hotel is just OK. As with a lot of other things in Venice, you get the sense that the staff is just putting up with you. We stayed three nights and it was mostly quiet, except for one morning when the loud, wall-shaking banging began at 7am. The breakfast is ok, and the room was ok.

We took the bus from the airport when we arrived at this hotel is in a great location - about a 5 -10 minute walk from the main bus station in Plazza de Romana. It is right on the canal, and you just have to cross the bridge to the nearest water bus stop which is also where the train station is.

Our first impressions were great, the hotel was very friendly and the receptionist told us they would be happy to book water taxis and tours for us if we wanted. He gave us a map and circled important land marks which was very useful as we were walking around.
The room was spacious - we had a triple - decor was old fashioned, typical venetian style but it was pleasant enough. Both the room and the bathroom were cleaned daily to a high standard, and the rooms were very quiet!
We stayed half board. Breakfast was a buffet which had everything you would want; bread, pastries, cereal, yoghurts & Bacon and scrambled egg. The fruit salad could have been better though, it was definitely straight from a tin - still in the syrup!
The dinner included 3 courses and was absolutely delicious! My daughter doesn't eat meat so the main menu was quite limiting - and it definitely would have been pasta everyday if she didn't eat fish - so if you're completely vegetarian it'd be worth contacting the hotel before booking.
On our last night, Filipe was fantastic - he kept bringing us extra treats - not that we needed any after such filling dinners but it was lovely any how
We had cocktails in the terrace bar one day which was perfect to escape the hassle of venice as it was very busy - these were pricey but the atmosphere & service made it worth it!

All the staff were very friendly - overall, we had a fantastic stay!

The location of the hotel was great. It's directly opposite the boat bus which takes you all around venice, we paid £25 euro for 36 hours of use.

Hotel was ok. Our room was small, especially as we had a baby travel cot in there but our parents rooms where a lot bigger with a balcony. The rooms where getting a little old and in need of a little update. Breakfast was tasty with quite a bit variety.

I would recommend hotel for location and good value.

We have recently stayed at this hotel and absolutely loved it! The hotel was great with a fantastic breakfast selection and a lovely service from the staff. The reception staff were helpful in advising us on nearby places to eat and were always friendly. We were very lucky as the Sky Lounge was open during our stay, so we had a delicious lunch on a gorgeous, sunny day overlooking the Grand Canal. It was one of our favourite things of our stay in Venice so I'd 100% recommend it! We had cake and coffee in the hotel bar a couple of times when we came back to the hotel to re-fuel which was delicious..great coffee and even better cakes! I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We didn't have a room overlooking the Grand Canal as it was rather expensive, however other gues...

Booked through the Venice Events company but run by Carlton.

Simply the worst - this company does not offer buyer protection in a situation when things go wrong.

1. Poor value for money
2. Ticket price for us was 240 Euros for two. Although at the reception other people paid different amounts which this event was suppose to be same for all.

The manager took the piece of paper before I could take a picture of it which clearly demonstrates an onerous cover up as I wanted to show the events programmers.

3. Food was cold and part warm (we where one of the first to get up), amounted no more than what we considered left overs. (Except the cheese balls), and cheap wine.

4. Entertainment of the stripper Burlesque or otherwise was considered inappropriate, she came on twice. Second time popping balloons what was that about???

5. Prancing girls around dance floor no actual dancing.

A lot more effort and description needs to put in place and the bad attitude of management at the Carlton, would not recommend this event.

I need to add the manager did try and offer help but later felt was a slap in the face, especially when the music did change for the better but then changed back to what we considered an insult i.e. YMCA music. We had gone off the food at this stage (lost appetite). He did offer us a glass of champagne but this was due to no other cash reimbursement which is a poor substitute for the over all lack of experience.
