“Good location, good hotel, reasonable price”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

We stayed at the Carlton on the Grand Canal in May 2014, we only visited Venice for one night so needed a hotel within reach of the main attractions and the Carlton fulfilled that need.

The hotel is a five minute walk from the bus station which we arrived at via a coach from Marco Polo airport, walking over a couple of bridges with our carry-on luggage was easily managed.

The hotel as well as having a canal front location is within 1/2 hours walk ( through meandering allways and ornate bridges ) to St Marks square.

The hotel's facilities are good, the rooms clean, newly decorated and very adequate. There's no escaping the fact that you're paying for the location rather than 5 star rooms but the hotel is relatively good value.

The rooms had a decent shower over a bath, wardrobes, safe and decent furniture and bedding. The air-con didn't work but that may be because it was only May, opening the windows provided a decent draught but in the summer the air-con would have been necessary.

A buffet breakfast was better than we'd expected, there was plenty of meats, cheeses, breads, juices, etc on offer and even a couple of hot ( or more accurately, warm ) items such as bacon and sausages.

The bar on the roof terrace had an excellant view which was a pleasure to sit out on in the evening sunshine and enjoy a drink or two. The drink prices were very expensive, we paid 8 euros for a small Moretti beer but again, you're paying for the view and location rather than a decent beer!

We'd recommend the hotel for a short stay in Venice as we enjoyed, it's location is good, relatively decently priced and the facilities are good too.

One final, off the track point, we found a camera memory card at the hotel, if anyone lost a memory card around the 1st May at the hotel contact me and let me know of the contents and I'll try to get the picture to you.

Room Tip: We had a side room, don't pay extra for a room overlooking the canal, you'll see more canals...

We spent four nights here two weeks ago. Loved the location and the rooftop bar. Room very, very small. I could deal with small but not one drawer or hook to put clothing or hang anything on! In the lobby sitting area they have a decoration with a ton of porcelain wall hooks on it, I guess they took them out of the rooms to make some sort of art display LOL! As other have mentioned found some of the hotel reception employees rather nasty. Our room key, a regular key not a key card, kept coming off the key ring. Metal was too thick for my husband to try to close gap himself, needed pliers. Marco looked annoyed that we asked if it could be fixed, took a quick look around in front of him and said can't find tool and handed back. We tried again next morning with another employee who took the time to look in the back area, fixed it and returned with a smile. I'm sorry I don't remember his name, I guess unfortunately it's the unpleasant people who stick out!

Stayed here for three nights last week and altogether a good experience. Lovely hotel, quiet and relaxing. We had a ground floor room inside the courtyard area. Although more modern than the older parts, still nicely decorated. Perfectly located for the train station and the vaperetto stop, just across the bridge where you can get on the vaperetto and go all the way to San Marco. However on arrival at Marco Polo airport, we took the Aliluna, a water bus which is about a 10 min walk to the stop and takes around 30 minutes to arrive at our stop. From there it is about a 10 minute walk across the bridge. Cost 15 euros per person, but worth it to arrive in Venice by water. A word of warning, it is a public service and even if you were to buy tickets in advance for your return journey, there is no guarantee that it will not be full. We waited for it to arrive for our return journey to the airport and there was no room. Not wanting to miss our flight, we arranged with some other passengers to get a private water taxi to the airport. Cost 20 euros per person. Carlton Hotel breakfast could be improved - scrambled egg, very overdone and solid and would have liked fresh fruit with my cereal rather than the awful tinned variety. But just a minor moan and expressed mainly in the hope that hotel may read and improve. All in all, would recommend.

Good location, right in front of the railroad station. The university area behind the hotel provides a lot of surprises particularly small boutique shops (excluding those that cater to chinese fake goods). Many excellent eating places which I have reviewed earlier.

Staff are very good - although some may need re-training in customer pleasantness, particularly those at the front desk.

Overall its a worthwhile place to stay whilst visiting Venice. Make sure you get the rooms fronting the center square ...

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights first weekend in May. An easy bus ride from the airport and ten minute walk from Piazzale Roma. Breakfast was nice with fresh coffee and room very comfortable. Conveniently located close to one of the few bridges over the Grand Canal and a vaporetto stop. Nice rooftop bar with good views. Stayed at Príncipe last year and this hotel is much nicer even though they have the same rating. Would definitely stay here again.

The location is the plus point of the hotel. You dont need to take a water taxi each time you want to go out from the hotel- just cross the bridge and you reach the other side. Rooms are small but clean. Wi-fi doesn't work and you have to sit in the reception if you have to use the Internet. Breakfast wasn't good- no options for vegetarians.

Room was spacious in comparison to other hotels in Italy.
Furnishings were definately in style with Venice
WiFi was a hit and miss depending on where you were standing in our room.
Location was good for your stay in Venice
Breakfast was typical italian style
boiled eggs, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, fruit, bread etc
nothing flash but filled the tummy.
Friendly staff throughout
And everything was very clean although a bit dated.
Would stay here again.
