I am late doing this but I still have great memories of staying here last year March 2013. It was my 60th birthday and they gave me a bottle of wine. The room was great with a spectacular view of the Grand Canal. I just could not imagine a better place to stay. Thank you so much Locanda Ovidius.

Room Tip: When the water rises, you must enter the hotel from a back street which can be tricky. Yet that is h...

Second visit to this hotel, both times had a canal view. Magnificent view of the Rialto bridge from our window and the communal balcony. Sit and watch the world go by from dawn to dawn if you wish. The hotel is very central for all parts of Venice and only a short walk to the Valperasso stop. All staff very friendly and helpful, it even had WiFi in our part of the hotel. The modem was in the lounge area but we were able to receive it in our room. For those concerned about air conditioning during summer, the unit was excellent, very little noise. At night we turned the A/C off when we went to sleep, the room kept a comfortable temperature all night. One tip, when you go out for the day close the shutters as the sun streams in until late afternoon. This does help keep the room cool.

Arrived into Venice from a long trip on a very hot day to arrive to this hotel where the lady at the front desk took us to our room. She barely spoke English which was fine but when she took us to our 'room' she led us to a small door which had 'privato' listed as the number/name of the room and it opened to a small set of stairs which went up to a bathroom level then up to an attic room with a spiral staircase which was extremely small. Room was in the attic and was extremely hot. There was no way we could have stayed there in that heat. With the ac on you could barely feel the cold coming out. Asked if there was another room and there was but had to pay extra for it. It was not a pleasant experience. While walking around we looked at other hotels and for the price we paid at ovidious we could have stayed in an amazing 4 star hotel with a full buffet breakfast on the canal. First time in Venice and the hotel put a damper on the experience of it all. The pictures on the site are probably from 10+ years ago as things are worn out and under maintained.

Room Tip: Do not get the 'privato' room. it is in the attic and is extremely hot and it not easy acces...

We stayed at the Ovidius hotel from the 14-19th of July 2014.
LOCATION : THE RIGHT PLACE if you want to be as close to everything as possible, and if you dont want to spend more time than neccessary on walking to/from the sights, restaurants and boutiques.
PRICE/QUALITY : The 4 out of 5 stars show that our total experience was great.
CLEANLINESS : VERY clean.
CALM : YES.
GOOD VIEW FROM THE 1st floor terrasse/breakfast room : YES.
EMPLOYÈE ATTITUDE : THIS made the difference ! Moreno at the front desk counter was more than fantastic. And so were the 2 other front desk employées. Positive, helpfull, good information (for instance about restaurant choice). Quite charming !
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN VENICE : Grand Canal Tour, Walking tour around the place preferably including a guide, Murano-Burano boat ride including glass visit and lace visit.
Remember to buy your ticket for the Doce Palace at the small ticket office at the West end of the San Marco Square (under one of the Arches). When you have bought your ticket here, you just walk in directly, passing all the MANY waiting tourists in the long queue (probably saves you around 1-1½ hour of waiting time).
RESTAURANTS : Trattoria alla Madonna, Calle Della Madonna, Rialto 594 (just around the corner) - try their sea bass or one of their larger fish, grilled and with olive oil, garlic, mayo.... Restaurant KO RI nearby the San Marco Square was quite fantastic when it comes to lobster (at fair prices). Try also the fish market very close to the hotel, here you find many restaurants with varieties.
ROSA SALVA cafeteria nearby the San Marco Square : You HAVE to go there !! Promise me ?
VAPORETTO or ALILAGUNA : I was very much in doubt before leaving, but I chose the Vaporetto. After having seen the boats, the timetables and more, I would deeply recommend, that you choose "the public bus", The Vaporetto. Alilaguna have closed boats, but if you are visiting the place during summer, this might not be so important. But IF you want to be able to take photos and to have a bit of "fresh air" during the ride, then the Vaporetto is it !
Consider taking the bus no. 5 from the San Marco airport to Piazzale Roma and the new glass-bridge. 50 steps from where bus ends, you enter the Vaporetto no. 1, which can lead you to the Rialto area, for instance.
WHERE TO BUY SOUVENIRS : From the Rialto bridge and southgoing. The more South you go, the better quality and the higher prices.
BE AWARE OF : Many fake "chinese owned" leather shops !! Much fake "Murano glass". TOO LITTLE TIME - dont spend less than 3-4 days in Venice. But I even recommend you to spend 5 days, in order to be able to see the most important Things, aswell as being able to get a feel of the city.
THINGS THAT MOST TOURIST DONT DO (BUT SHOULD DO) : A visit to the Accademia museum, an opera/concert (Vivaldi e L´opera ?), a sunset from Giadeccia, a gondola ride with music - try to search the web for possible AMUSING tour operators.
I hope, that you will enjoy your Venice visit. Good trip to you.
Yours
Claudia & Niels, Roskilde, Denmark

Had 2 great nights here. This hotel has an excellent location right on the grand canal and just along from the rialto bridge. Our room overlooked the canal and with a constantly changing view we could have spent hours watching the world go by.
The room was spacious and clean and well maintained, although no screen on the shower did present some challenges for showering without flooding the room.
Yes the check-in did seem a little manual but we found this part of the charm and quirkiness of the place. The receptionists were very helpful and courteous at all times.
The hotel was very clean and quiet and whilst we were aware there were other guests there was no sense of bustle, it was relaxed and peaceful.
A wonderful well priced Venetian hotel. We would stay again and recommend to others.

Upon our arrival we were welcomed by being asked to pay the city tax - immediately- in cash. I understand that the tax is necessary but the way we were asked to pay it seemed quite rude. The receptionist even complained about the denomination (20) and wanted exact change.
Our room was rather small and shabby, but pretty clean. The shower door was broken, and the shower head didn't work properly either. The water pressure was terrible.
We expected wifi to be free since we paid quite a bit of money, but no. We had to pay an extra 5 euros for Internet with a speed that would have been slow in the 90s. It was also only available in the common area. I can't believe we paid for it, what a horrible money grab.
I'm not sure if it's a common practice in Venice, but we had to leave our key at reception every time we left. It made us feel pretty uncomfortable because we felt anyone could claim the key- the receptionists didn't ask for names or Id or anything when we claimed it. It was also a bit of an inconvenience because if the receptionist wasn't there, or speaking to someone else we had to wait just to get into our room.
Breakfast was pretty bad. Just cereal and white bread for toast.
None of the staff were particularly friendly either.
The only good thing about this place was the location, and the ac.
I would not recommend this place to anyone and definitely won't be returning.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and had a lovely, quiet and comfortable time.

On first arrival, we were met by a friendly lady who swiftly showed us to our room.

We were a little surprised to learn our room was in the attic, but was told it is usually reserved for honeymooners. As this was a surprise birthday trip, it seemed plausible that we had been upgraded.

Initially I think the hotel employee sensed we were a little confused by the room, given it had a dodgy door lock and a tall narrow spiralling metal stair case, she swiftly showed us to the window and opened the shutters, where we saw the most amazing view of the grand canal. Considering a canal view would normally cost much more than was paid, we were very pleased.

Throughout our stay we found the staff to be very friendly, where they even added a complimentary bottle of prosecco to our room to celebrate a birthday.

The continental breakfast was adequate and set us up for the day, offering fresh cold meats, cereal, toast accompanied by many different preserves, and strong coffee and tea.

On checkout we were able to leave our luggage and advised that we could use full facilities of the hotel until we left for the airport. This included a comfortable lounge and full bathroom with shower.

Overall we we very impressed with this quirky, traditional hotel and would recommend it to anyone looking to experience true Venice.
