“Great location! Would stay again!”
Reviewed 29 July 2011

This is a cute hotel very close to St. Marc's square. The location was perfect. The hotel staff and owners were wonderful. The rooms were very clean, with comfy beds. We had requested a/c but didn't get it. There was a fan in the room and the nights were cool enough for sleeping, so this didn't end up being a huge problem. "Breakfast" was water bread with butter and jam. Come to find out, all the bread in Venice is like this for some reason. Oh, well. On the upside, there was great coffee and lots of it! We would certainly stay here again. You can get up in the morning and have coffee while watching gondoliers row their way past you. Bliss!

It's hard to say whether or not the hotel is good value, as everything in Venice is hyper-inflated. We did appreciate the location, which was great, and the owners were unbelievably nice and gracious. It smarts to pay so much to haul your own suitcase up several flights of narrow stairs and to eat nasty store-bought rolls with nutella for the 'Italian breakfast' every morning. If you start your trip here, it will only get better. If you end here, adjust your expectations. It's cool to have a canal view, but then you also get canal noise. How many times are you willing to hear 'Volare' being sung to tourists in a gondola?

Charming hotel, in lovely canal-side location. It is a long ways from the train station, but an easy walk to/from Piazza San Marco so definitely take the vaporetto with your luggage. The room and bathroom were very very tiny, though I suspect everything is in Venice. The rates, while more than we paid throughout the rest of Italy, were the lowest I was able to find in Venice. "Breakfast: was the same dry dinner rolls every morning which gets pretty dull, but it’s nice to at least be able to have a cup of coffee and grab a serving of nutella before you head out into the day. Love the first impression of walking into this homey but elegant lobby with gondaliers right outside the windows.

After arriving at our booked hotel Locanda Ca Del Console and being told they overbooked and there was no room for us, (having paid for it 6 monhs earlier) I could envisage a disaster was about to develop. We were moved to Hotel RIVA under protest but I am so glad now that we were moved. The hotel RIVA is much closer to St Marcos Square and the room we had with canal views was excellent.

If you want a 5 star hotel, don't come here. But if we want a family type hotel with a comfortable bed, decent shower and toilet at a good price then this is it. The water taxi stops right out the front and I recommend anyone going to Venice to grab a water taxi. The extra price is worth it. It will save you dragging you luggage over bridges all around Venice and arriving exhausted.

The owners Sandro and Iris were so helpful. They welcomed us as if we were family and assured us that even though the other hotel left us without a room, they would would fix everything. And they did. They helped us even taking our luggage up and when we left, Sandro even helped us bringing our luggage down.

Breakfast was acceptable with good coffee. The room has no tv or barfridge but it is not needed for a few days stay and this is what keeps their price down.

Thank you Sandro, Iris and even the lovely lady at the desk I think her name was Daniela. You made our stay in Venice memorable and next time you are on top of our list.

I knew when we booked the room that the price ($110.00 euro a night) and location seemed unreal. However, the pictures and the other reviews were good. When we arrived, I immediately checked the room for any signs that there were bugs or rodents. We found none. We went to the lobby and within 15 minutes of being in the lobby, a rat was seen under a chair. The clerk went to get his large wooden stick and began to bang his "rat stick" around and the rat ran out.

The next afternoon, another rat in the lobby was seen and the clerk took the rat stick to the walls again, but this time the rat ran up into the wall. The next morning, when we went to check out at 6:30 am, there were rat droppings all the way down the stairs.

I was told by the clerk that rats are "everywhere in Venice" , but after three full days in Venice, my hotel was the only place that had a rat problem. Indeed, it was the only place I saw a rat.

Obviously, despite the great location and lovely rooms, I would never ever stay here again.

We are really sorry about this isolated incident happened one week ago, the hotel is located near the canal, in Venice we have rats, this one of the most important problem here, one evening one rat entered in the hotel, the entrance is on the ground floor near the canal, myself and my job colleague tried to get him out without luck, he entered over the wood we have in the lobby, the second day in the afternoon he went out, it was a very unpleasent incident for us, we are sorry about what happened, but this may happen in Venice, now we stay with the door closed! NO RATS at Hotel Riva, but rats in Venice!

We were delighted to be right on a canal and have the gondolas passing under our window. Being close to St. Mark's Square made it a convenient location. For a small hotel we were surprised to have WiFi available. The bed was comfortable and we slept fine with the fan that was in the room.

This place had character. We found it in the Rick Steves guidebook. Our room was tiny, but who cares? You're in Venice! Who's hanging in their room? LOL We loved Venice. Our room was comfortable and on the canal, and we shared a bathroom with 3 other rooms, but they have rooms with no view and private bath. The rooms that share bathrooms have their own sinks in their room though. Their breakfast and coffee was bad. I think they are trying to make "American" coffee to please the Americans, but it's terrible. We would stay here again. Can't wait to go back to Venice!
