“Charming wonderful place to stay.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 December 2013

Found this hotel quite by chance and was first stroke of luck on what proved to be a fantastic trip!
got to the hotel at height of the Spring tide and found the staff welcoming and pleasant even at a late hour. Breakfast was charming with more of a feel of an English Tearoom but great relaxed way to start the day.
Best feature is the location only a few minutes stroll form the Grand Canal yet feels like your a world away from the manic hustle and bustle of all the other tourists.
Room was lovely, clean, warm and comfortable. Would (and have!) recommended this to family and friends. Would be difficult to top for the value provided.

The weather was very cold and foggy but this delightful hotel made up for it. We had a very comfortable room without a view, which given the poor visibility (we couldnt see across the canal) was not a drawback. The hotel had a settled feel to it with paintings and engravings on the walls.
The staff were helpful and the buffet breakfast very good. We would definitely stay there again.

A charming , very well located small hotel .
Very clean ,professionally run place , with very good breakfast and wonderful but expensive meals for special occasions. Helpful staff , good prices and comfortable beds with proper pillows..
Its diificult to improve on the package ..and I try hard to get the same or better cheaper ..
but have not yet suceeded..
what would I like to see next stay ? a dinner discount based on nights stayed ..something that makes it worth staying at home for ..at a reasonable price ..Venice food is often poor in quality and high in price . LC can improve by offering an evening half board set menu plan and not lowering the high standards that atracts non staying diners..More important in winter than summer for guests .

Room Tip: no lift ..budget is the constraint cannot afford the view ..other things are more important ..

La Calcina calls itself a pensione but they deliver services like a hotel! Venice is expensive but La Calcina offers a reasonably priced room in an excellent locality. Having breakfast with a splendid view of the Giudecca Canal alone is worth staying here for. The rooms are reasonably sized, with quite a large bathroom. We happened to stay in the one with a terrace overlooking the canal and I can highly recommend it. The service was always attentive and the breakfast simple but tasty. I doubt if you get better price/quality ratio anywhere in Venice.

Room Tip: Ask for room number 4, it is the one with the terrace!

This may be my sixth stay with the Pensione La Calcina and there will be more. It is certainly not the finest hostelerie in Venice nor the least expensive but in my humble estimation it is the best choice for an experienced traveler. To avoid the crush of the crowds descending from the 3000 plus cruise ship occupancies or the hot fishy clouds of humid salt air enveloping you from the summer canals; the constant maneuvering of narrow alleys and steep bridges , La Calcina is the oasis that is still only ten minutes from San Marco. The location that is close to everything and the positioning on the Giudecca Canal are its two premier advantages. The interiors feel dreary and tarnished, but the light from the south is intoxicating. I have twice stayed in interior (views of neighboring walls) but they are fine--my last one had a window in the bathroom which I love. the service used to be a bit ;'stiff' but is now very friendly and helpful. They make a 'mean' omelette for breakfast and their Fegato Veniziana is excellent so I have nothing bad to say about the kitchen. Massimo can serve Gin and Tonics at the cocktail hour as well as any tender in Venice. I have stayed many places in Venice from the Gritti and the Cipriani to humble pensiones on remote canals but I tend to always want to come back to La Calcina.

Room Tip: the rooms on the southern outsice corners are the best with the terrace rooms even better. The inter...

La Calcina is a delightful hotel in a great location. The staff was extremely kind and helpful with any of my many questions. The room was comfortable and had a nice view. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful with many choices. The laundry service was efficient and reasonable as to price and my items were ironed beautifully.
I really felt that the staff cared about my interest in Venice and helps me with maps, guides and reservations. I would most definitely recommend this hotel.

We just came back from 4 days at La Calcina. It is the very best location, you can walk easily to San Marco, use the water buses, I would stay here again. The rooms are small and musty, and our room had a view of a wall. The breakfasts are great. The restaurant is also great and the person I remember best with the greatest love for his job is the head maitre 'd. He goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The rest of the staff while always polite are very reserved, seem uninformed about tours, etc and can not be used as a concierge. Despite all this, I would go back again, because the location is perfect.
