Took the vaporetta to this island . Well worth the time. Nice church. Small price to go up the tower but well worth it for the views.

This little island was so peaceful compared to the madness of St Marks square, so lovely and serene, we enjoyed our walk around the island and loved the view from the tower, well worth 6 euros anytime.
Breath-taking views over Venice and so calm and a beautiful breeze on your face, it was like a different world, we were so glad to have done this trip, lots of great photo opportunities, don't miss it.

Take the Vaporetto #2 to the 2nd to last stop (right before San Marco).

Small fee to go up the bell tower. Bell tower is likely slightly smaller than the San Marco bell tower, but why go up the San Marco Campanile to see Venice without San Marco Basilica, the Campanile and Palazzo Ducale? San Giorgio Maggiore gives you the total view, with all attractions included. Sounds like the better deal to me.

So you like Venice but the crowds can be a bit overwhelming? San Giorgio Maggiore island a few minutes away by water bus (Vaporetto) is the perfect place for solace and reflection. The church by the same name is a 16th century Benedictine church with more art and artifacts than one can absorb. There are many altars typically with paintings above each one and my favorites were The Last Supper and The Fall of Manna. Visitors are free to take pictures and the interior is light enough for nice pictures without a flash. Past the main altar are the hand carved stalls magnificently depicting the life of Saint Benedict (547 AD) carved in walnut. Atop some of the stalls are hand carved statues of the 12 apostles. The entrance is free and there is a small fee for the lift to the bell tower area. I have read there are 5 guest rooms where you can stay with the monks. If you want to do something other than the traditional hotel you may want to check this out. Beautiful island and church sans people I highly recommend and even though St. mark's is amazing this was the highlight of my trip!

We were recommended this by an american couple that had been to Venice 20 times, we never went up the tower in san marco square due to the ques but this tower gives you view looking over Venice too (not as high up) but still good
