This is convenient to the vaporetto stop of the same name. The church is more lovely than expected. But, the real surprise with the crypt in the basement. It was partially submerged under water and made a really interesting experience, and great photo op.

The Basilica might be handing out shawls, but not the smaller churches, and they aren't kidding about the strict dress code in the guide books. Wasn't in here for a minute before the curator asked me to cover up, as I was wearing a sleeveless dress. Now I understand why they sell scarves in Piazza San Marco even in the summer heat! Anyway, the art looked impressive for the minute I got to see it. At least the entry was free.

We just bumped into this cathedral accidentally and are so glad we did! :) It became my favorite cathedral in Venice!! Why? Well, if you look at the paintings/mosaics in most cathedrals, Jesus/God are portrayed as very worthy of respect, but also as rather unapproachable (too high and holy). This church shows a more approachable, personal Jesus. When entering the church, look to the right side. There is a lovely painting showing a young Jesus reaching TOWARDS a worshipper!! :)

I agree that the church is dark. It has less windows and light than others and is full of large, dark-ish paintings. Too bad we didn't know we could pay a bit to have it illuminated.

This is a wonderful, free entry church with hidden treasures and a magnificent façade in a quiet square immediate off the Riva degli Schiavona. Just look for Hotel Savoia and Jolanda and pass through the Sortoportego passageway immediately to the right of the hotel entrance. It is well worth paying the 50 cents in a slot on the right hand side of the church to illuminate it and an extra 50 cents to illuminate the beautiful 15th century Bellini's Madonna and the Saints altarpiece. Further down on the right hand side, you can pay a couple of euros to visit some very atmospheric ancient parts of the church where some of the doges are buried, however this is not always possible as the area downstairs can be flooded at times of the high water

The outside of the church is beautiful--look for the shell motif. There is a lovely small garden nearby. Then, prepare yourself for the Bellini masterpiece on the inside. If you like Bellinis, you will love this one--the colors, the musical instrument, and the expressions will stay with you.
