Cannareggio offers a lot of great restaurants, bars and cafés in an authentic atmosphere far from the tourist hot-spots. Tipp: the tour of the synagogues!

Santa Lucia train station and Piazzale Roma are located in Cannaregio. You come to or leave Venice either by train or plane. Because public transportation is very expensive in Venice, you might consider to stay at Cannaregio area. Start walking in front of Santa Lucia train Staion towards San Marco, you will walk throughout touristic streets of Venice.

Far from the madding crowds around San Marco - and the hordes of cruise ship zombies.
This is one of the more authentic areas of a brilliant city.

I know theres a lot of culture to see -churches to visit -etc - the Ghetto which was disappointingly depressing - I didn't like the feel of this area .

Walking through the unbelievably narrow streets and over the small foot bridges at night in search of authentic and delicious restaurants was one of my favorite parts of my trips. Although Venice doesn't have a lot of year long residents, many of those who do live in Venice, live here.
