We stayed in an apartment in Cannaregio and it gave us a different experience of Venice. This is the area where local people live and work and go about their daily life, being friendly to tourists like us invading their world. This area is convenient to vaporetto stops, S. Marcuola is 5 minutes walk from the heart of Cannaregio and will grant you access to all the stops on the grand canal and beyond. The Jewish quarter of Venice is located here and while it seems scary at first to be wandering down tight alleyways, our experience was that the area is quite safe and free from antisocial behaviour. The restaurants in the area are a good bit cheaper than the tourist traps near St. Mark's Square and the quality is good for the most part. Well worth a visit.

Lovely area, next to train station and near to Grand Canal! Some really nice restaurants and cafes. If you stay here you should go to the Irish bar too! Most reviews say it takes around 30-40 minutes to walk to St Mark's square so we expected it to take a while, but we were there in 20 minutes! It was a lovely walk through the shopping district of San Marco and past the many smaller canals. There is a small local supermarket too. We really enjoyed our 4 night stay here and would definitely recommend it. Ideal for couples.

No one should visit Venice without visiting all the six districts and Cannaregio is quite authentic as to how most Venetians live. The area between this district and Castello is where the Church of the Madonna dell 'Orto is located and what an active busy square it is! Also, the famous antiques and rug dealer, Houshang Rachtian, has his shop in the Palazzo Tiepolo.

Pleasant street to wander along with several bars and restaurants. Away from really popular tourist areas although within easy walking distance of Rialto and St Mark's Square.

Cannareggio offers a lot of great restaurants, bars and cafés in an authentic atmosphere far from the tourist hot-spots. Tipp: the tour of the synagogues!
