Cannaregio is a mainly residential area of Venice but there is still much to see here in a less quieter and less crowded way. Small restaurants offer better value than those in the main tourist areas. Churches such as Madonna Del Orto are well worth a visit. And the Jewish area dating from the 14th century was the first Ghetto in the world.

We stayed for a week in this area and it was interesting in itself and only took 20 min walk on a well signposted walk past many shops into san marco square. We would choose to stay here again.

We visited this area on several occasions following the main tourist trail from the railway station down to the Rialto bridge and also went off the beaten track, great place in which to lose a few hours, lots of photo opportunities.

We rented an apartment through airbnb. We did not want to stay too close to the really touristy areas. We stayed in the Cannaregio. It was perfect. 20 minute walk to train station. 5 minute walk to vaporetto stop. Longer, but fun walk to St. Mark's. Good restaurants and a grocery right around the corner. Loved it. Wish we had had more time to explore and absorb the history

Very interesting history. There is also a museum that offers tours of synagogues. There are some interesting shops that sell murano glass items. They also sell Jewish-themed glass items to purchase too.
