Cavalletto & Doge Orseolo

This hotel is basically attached to Piazza San Marco (St Marks Square), just walk to the back of the northwest corner of the square, through a passageway, over the small bridge and you are there. We stayed in room 2405 and had a porter take us up to our room after we checked in and were very glad we did. After many twists and turns and a few more staircases (the elevator did not take us all the way) we arrived to a very nice, spacious and fairly private room overlooking a small courtyard and views of the top of St. Marks Basilica and the square's Campanelle (Tower). The room has a safe, just get the key at the front desk for a 20 Euro refundable deposit. The bathroom was a good size with a large bathtub. Great hot and cold breakfast in the morning with cereals, fruit, eggs, bacon, cheese and meats to enjoy while overlooking the lagoon and the gondolas. There are also three separated 2-person balconies overlooking the lagoon where we enjoyed a nice glass of wine and people watching as they got on and off the gondolas. The gondoliers are interesting to watch too, as they banter together and guide their gondolas around the tight lagoon. The bar opens at 5-5:30 in the evening and Paulo the bartender was excellent and remembered exactly what we were drinking from the evening before. Front desk staff were excellent and one fellow (can't recall his name) without hesitation knew our room number when we came in at the end of the day to pick up our key. The location is excellent. St. Marks is unbelievably busy during the day but you pretty well have it to yourself early in the mornings or evenings where you can stroll with a gelato and listen to the orchestras situated outside of the restaurants in the square. Also very close to the vaporetto (water bus) and alilaguna (airport ferry) stops. Venice is easy to walk around (and get lost in) but only has 2 major bridges across the Grand Canel. We found the Traghetti ( 2-man gondola ferry) at 2 Euro pp to be very helpful in getting across the Canal quickly and efficiently saving us a few steps. Just look for Traghetti signs at street corners to direct you.
I would have given this hotel a 5 star rating except the beds dipped in the middle and the wifi did not work for us, but we were able to use their computer in the lobby which was ok.

We took the water taxi from the airport directly to the hotel's dock since we wanted to enjoy quality time in Venice since it was just an overnight stay before we had to board our cruise ship later the next evening. What a sight to see Venice with the sunset. The hotel location was so wonderful as we were able to enjoy strolling in and around St. Mark's square at night. We were able to enjoy a romantic gondola ride starting from right outside of the hotel dock. The next day, we were able to have our luggage stored and then we enjoyed getting lost in Venice. Time went by so quickly, it was time to leave, we were able to join another couple heading for the cruise port via water taxi.

Backing up a bit, I must say It was a little tricky getting our luggage up to our room upon arrival, but there was a nice young man who lugged our large suitcase up the staircases.

So, the next time you're looking for a hotel in Venice, come visit Albergo Cavalletto & Doge Orseolo, spend the extra money$$$ and enjoy your stay. Thank you staff for accomodating us all the way from the US after our over 18 hour flight; appreciate your email regarding transportation advice from the airport. We enjoyed our stay at your hotel, got a great night's sleep, and loved Venice. thank you.

Stayed here for 4 nights. Room was small but well furnished and spotlessly clean. Great value for the location. Staff were helpful and the barman "joker" looked like he just stepped out of a James Bond movie! He could mix a perfect negroni which rivalled that in Harry's bar any day! Chilled prosecco overlooking the gondola park made the holiday perfect! Venice is an amazing city and this hotel is a great base to explore the fascinating history.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at his hotel in the 2nd week of September. The ride in from the airport via private speed boat was breathtaking, winding through the local canals and dropping us a St Mark’s Square for a short walk to the hotel. The hotel foyer was well appointed and the staff friendly throughout our stay, the room size was an issue on arrival. We had a lovely view over the canal however there was no room for our baggage and ourselves in the room. We approached the hotel staff and were told to return in the morning and they would see if a larger room came available at the same rate. The hotel breakfast was very good as was the bar for an evening drink to relax after all the days walking, it looked out over the canals behind St Mark’s Square with the Hard Rock café opposite and the crowds excited outside our window waiting for their gondolas ride .
I would recommend the hotel but stipulate your room type on booking.
Thanks to all the staff

My friends and I chose the hotel because of its good location (next to St Marks Sq, across from Hard Rock Café) and also because it has a private docking for boats, gondolas and water taxis. However, as it turned out, no water taxi wanted to dock there as it was congested with gondolas. We could have chosen a better hotel even without private docking !! However the service was very good, the staff always helpful and friendly. Shops and restaurants were an easy walk away. However there were a number of items that made us wish we should have chosen a different hotel, such as poor WiFi, TVs with tiny screens, and the bar closed early.

Room Tip: Choose a canal-facing room (with extra cost), very picturesque with all the gondolas parked there.

We stayed a few days in this hotel in the end of september 2012.

It is in a gorgious location, near a park for gondollas and harry's bar!

Our room was nice, a bit noisy (poor isolation).

Staff is professional, bar is very nice place to drink a glass!

Good remebering about this hotel!

The only good thing about this hotel was the location, it's situated just next to st marks square..the female staff was extremely rude, we tried asking her for suggestions on where to dine and she snubbed us very rudely by telling ask to walk along dark alleys in hope to find an open restaurants without giving us names or details and it was just 9 pm.. The room was very tiny we could barely move.. Don't even get me started on the bathroom .. All in all we had a bad experience there...:(
