“if you like mosquitoes - this is the place to be!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2009

We stayed at Antico Capon for two nights in Sept 2009. The place was centrally located hence it wasn't too hard to find it. Upon arrival we were met by a man who seemed to exude an aura of creepiness, but friendly enough nonetheless. We were surprised to find that our room was actually in a separate ancient and crumbling building away from the actual hostel building tucked inside a dark alleyway. The room was a reasonable size and I was actually quite pleased with it until we were unceremoniously attacked by a huge colony of mosquitoes. Upon closer inspection, there was a thick layer of dust and grit on chairs and tables, and ceiling of the room was almost completely smeared in mosquito blood. On our first night we spent about 2 hours trying to kill the little buggers but I guess they must have been breeding overnight as the next day they seemed to have tripled in numbers. The shower wasn't too great either - the showerhead was broken and the shower door wouldn't close.

All in all, I wouldn't really recommend this place to anyone - go somewhere else if you don't want to wake up itching all over.

The place is really not that bad, I was a bit scared after reading all the comments here but we ended up having a good stay (3 nights) there and the price is probably one of the best you'll find in Venice.

-> Cleanliness : according to me the place is perfectly clean, no bed bugs whatsoever, the bathroom was spotless.

-> Service : the owner is friendly but ... a bit weird. Watch out, you might get involved is some kind of pseudo metaphysical conversation in half italian half english with him... Other than that, the linens are hard to find in the place... I ended up sleeping with what seemed to be a piece of curtain ... Don't ask for anything extra as you might get the following (and very helpful) answer that I got : "I have nothing else than a bed for you to sleep, if you came last week you'd have slept on the floor" (great !! thanks...).
The real complain I have is that after two nights in one room, we came back for the third night and had a great surprise : our stuff weren't there anymore... Someone had moved the beds and there were other bags in the room... we learned a bit later that they had moved all our stuff in another room (hopefully nothing was missing), great ! It wasn't that much of a big deal but that's the kind of surprise you have to expect...
Other than that, the owner or other staff members are very often away, the reception is officially open from like 8 to 21 but more than likely you'll end up in front of closed door saying "If you need call .xxxxx, I'll be back soon" ("soon" here is like one or two hours depending on the weather).

-> Location : the location is perfect. the place is very living, it's close to the station, close to a food store, close to san marco, .... ("close" according to me is less than 20 minutes walking) and it's not too noisy.

-> the rooms are ok but a bit small it would be ok for 3 beds, the fourth one is a bit too much but you can still cope.

So... for students on a budget, the place is good and I'd recommend it ! (Just ignore the service)

Two previous comments written here were very helpful for us :

-do NOT forget insect repellent, venice IS infested with mosquitos.
-do NOT eat at the trattoria just down the hostel, it's more expansive and the staff is not friendly. Actually when you go out of the hostel, you'll see two other trattorias on your right (50 meters away from you) and those two are good, affordable and the staff IS friendly...

Save yourself the possibility of catching a veritable melange of communicable diseases and book somewhere else!!!! This place is a health hazard - thick mould all through out the showers and bathrooms - threadbare stained towels - beds with old wardrobe doors supporting the springs underneath - various junk stored in the room - an unforgivable odour and worst of all an unapologetic, incredible creepy and absolute street urchin of a manager. We were directed away from the almost quaint looking yellow building on the campo to some shambles of a place in the alleyway off the other end of the square above a kebab shop. The manager had not made up the room which had clearly not seen a can of spray and wipe for as long as venice is old. After reluctantly fetching two single bed sheets he instructed us to make the beds ourselves whilst making inappopriate and uncomfortable comments to me and my travel companion which could not be forgiven as 'local character.' we were not given a bath towel for the leaky shower room and had to improvise with a heavily stained old pillow that was discarded among other junk in the room. the room was incredibly noisy at night and we woke each morning more tired and irritable than the day before. i have travelled a lot and do not mind basic accommodation but this was the worst place i have stayed in 30 plus years of travel around the world. if you find yourself pre booked here - forgo the deposit and go someplace else. demand to see the rooms first and you will see why - a complete disgrace and a blight on an otherwise fantastic month trip around europe.

My fiance and I backpacked Europe for the summer of 2008. We wanted to stay in Venice within walking distance to all the sites, but everywhere was so expensive. We found the Capon on Trav.com for a great price, in a great location so we booked it. Lets be honest, this place is no gem, but its safe, semi-clean, and in a great location.... and its CHEAP. We had some trouble with construction in the building next door, but the owners were nice, the room was.. ehh ok for people in their 20s on a budget. We would stay again if we were going on a budget.

We were unlucky enough to not only have stayed there (couldn't stand it, so just for one night), but also to have experienced their so-called fine cuisine... Upon arrival we were welcomed by an older man with a fake smile, something was suspicious as there seemed to be no guests around at the moment, and all the staff were busy hunting for new customers.
Briefly speaking - we strongly recommend NOT to stay there (bugs, destroyed and dirty furniture, no hot water, bad smell, etc). In addition, food and drinks were utterly disgusting, while the staff, from the moment we started complaining about the service and quality of the food, agressive and unfriendly. We were literally a second away from calling the police.

In short: better stay in a tent on Campo Santa Margharita than at Antico Capon.

I had read that Campo Santa Margherita was the place for reasonably priced food, as it attracted the student population.
I am sorry to say, Antico Capon was not a pleasant eating experience and we should have realised this by the front of house gentleman who coaxed us in. We were hungry (we were still hungry on leaving) Good restaurants are far too busy to spare a member of staff to do this.
Food ~ lack lustre and over priced! The wine "it only comes in bottles, not carafs" Other restaurants manage. The restaurant was busy, but only thanks to the pressure salesman out front! This is Venice, look around you ~ lots of good restaurants with good prices. Do not be pressurised to go in. Another tip,
look for Osteria or Taverna ~ avoid restaurant!!

I was unlucky when i stayed here as it was not part of the main building. I agree with many of the reviews below that it was like staying in an old dead person's appartment that had not been cleaned out. There were no plug sockets and the towel on the floor in the bathroom was like something my dog would lie in after having a mud bath. It was a good location but very loud on the square at night. However, it was terrible value for money. i have since stayed in venice and got a lovely clean and friendly hotel for only ten euros more. Don't risk staying here!
