“Not very welcoming”
Reviewed 14 September 2012

Hotel Minerva

An indifferent welcome but very kind and helpful breakfast hostess and house maids. We were somewhat alarmed having been told there was  someone in the office 24 hours to find ourselves locked in on our last morning. We had got up early, 6.30 to take a final walk around and we could not get out and no staff in the hotel. So it was frustrating to be deprived of precious early morning time out in venice and to think of the danger of a  locked door in case of fire.

We stayed here at the end of June 2012 with temps of around 31-34 degrees celsius (which was very hot for us). It is only about 5 mins walk from the train station, and perhaps another 5 mins or so from the bus depot. The lady on reception was very nice and very helpful. Our room was on level 2 looking over the street. Very interesting during the day...however very noisy during the night and early hours of the morning so make sure you bring earplugs. The room was very spacious and clean with a small basin. We had shared facilities, however I never once saw anyone else use the shower or toilet (which was cleaned regularly). Breakfast was basic, but nice. The biggest issue we had was lack of air-conditioning which made sleeping at night near impossible. We managed to find a pedestal fan which helped a little...but air-con would have been wonderful especially in those types of temps.

Room Tip: Ask for air-con if they have it and for a room away from the street side.

I was a bit worried about this hostel/hotel, but we definitely lucked out with this choice. We had a large room on the 3rd floor (no elevator!), with a wash basin in the room. The room overlooked the street, which was very noisy until the early hours, so bring earplugs. No fan/air-con, so you'll need the windows open in the summer.
The toilet and shower were shared on each floor. Acceptably clean, but not the best i've ever experienced. If you're a fussy traveler, you will not like this!
Wi-fi is a bit of a rip off - it didn't work for us unless we were sitting right next to the reception desk, the signal didn't even register from the first floor up.
We got mixed signals from the various people in reception about leaving our bags for the day, but in the end it wasn't a problem. The baggage area is in the breakfast area, and really anyone could come in and take a bag. The train station is a very short walk away, and you can hire a locker, if you're carrying valuables.
I would definitely stay here again - the great location and proximity to the train station is its greatest benefit.

We had a pleasant surprise when we arrived at this hostel. Our room was so large that it was divided into two! We basically had our own rooms. Bed linen was provided. The bathroom was separate but very clean. Ther
Two downsides were the location and the lack of wi-fi. The hostel was right on the edge of the island which is better than being off the island but we would've preferred to be closer to the action. There are a few great restaurants around the hostel though.
Free wi-fi is available but it doesn't seem to work on iPhones.
There are good kitchen facilities and a cosy common room.

We found out what one star meant the hard way. Our room overlooked the noisy street, and had no air conditioning - forcing us to decide between suffocation (the room stunk of cigarettes and urine) and no sleep due to the noise from the street. We subsequently asked for a pedestal fan, which cost €3 per day. You also had to pay for wifi. The breakfast was not included in our stay, which is lucky since it would have cost us €5 for individually sealed mini toast and jam. There was a dead bug stuck to the shared shower for the entirety of our stay (three days). Worst of all, the gentleman at reception was incredibly rude and condecending. I strongly advise against staying here.

i got a room at the 3rd floor, and there's no elevator (a big mistake not to left my luggage at the Santa Lucia, unfortunate for me that luggage storage in Santa Lucia is costly).....the shower room need to be redecorated. the room itself is clean and tidy. the location is near the santa lucia, but it will be quite far from Piazza di st. Marco. the lady is quite helpful, but the guy speaks limited english. Value for money.

Fine small hotel in a beautiful area.
Two steps from the station and the vaporetto stop.
Plenty of cafes nearby, including the budget Breck with Italian menu.
There is a large supermarket near piazza di Roma,
Staff friendly, rooms are spacious, hearty breakfast, WiFi in the room.
No elevator.
Good value for money.
Very grateful to Magda, always friendly and positive, sorry, it was not possible to say goodbye to her before leaving.
I am pleased to dwell in the Minerva again.
