Owner description: Ca’ Pesaro, the most important baroque palace in the city, designed by Baldassare Longhena, has been the seat of Venice City Council’s collection of Modern Art since 1902. The collection was created in 1897 on occasion of the city’s second Art Biennale. The focus of the museum’s collections consists of works that won prizes or were acquired in the early decades of the Biennale. These include famous masterpieces, such as Klimt’s Judith II (Salomè, 1909) and Chagall’s Rabbi of Vitebsk (1922). One of the museum’s strengths is its vast collection of sculptures, including works in wax by Medardo Rosso, donated to the museum by the artist in 1914. Further acquisitions and bequests have endowed the museum with notable works, from Kandinsky to Klee, Matisse to Moore, as well as a rich selection of works by Italian artists and an important cabinet of graphic art. After restoration works in 2002, the exhibition area has been extended further to the second floor. The Oriental Art Museum, on the third floor, which can be visited with the same ticket.

“Nice not Great”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

The building is a large part of its appeal. The collection is good but not great. Anyone coming from a city probably has seen better contemporary art, or certainly equal to it.

“Beautiful peaceful place”
Reviewed 15 June 2014 via mobile

This gallery is a joy ! Situated on the side of the grand canal along a small passage !
Even though the Klimt and Chagall were not there the exhibition shows various pieces of art ranging from Croatia to boxes of Brillo pads from Warhol !! Magical !!

“An unexpected gem”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

I had no idea that this gallery existed. It contains art from the late 19th century, usually works that have been exhibited at the biennale and purchased by the gallery. The house itself is amazing with beautiful painted ceilings and inlaid mosaic floors.

I loved seeing the late 19th/early 20th century art which reminded me in some ways of John Singer Sargent. A beautiful Spanish painting of people mending a sail that absolutely glows, and an intriguing painting by Casorati entitled 4 maidens. The visit was an unexpected treat if you like this period in art.

“Aturned into 2 hours lost”
Reviewed 26 February 2014

What a great place! I am not a fan of Modern Art and in fact only wanted to see the Kilmpt but we were very surprised. This museum houses many great works of art and is an absolute hidden treasure.

Pop in whether you like art or not, you will get lost amongst the beauty!
