Owner description: Ca’ Pesaro, the most important baroque palace in the city, designed by Baldassare Longhena, has been the seat of Venice City Council’s collection of Modern Art since 1902. The collection was created in 1897 on occasion of the city’s second Art Biennale. The focus of the museum’s collections consists of works that won prizes or were acquired in the early decades of the Biennale. These include famous masterpieces, such as Klimt’s Judith II (Salomè, 1909) and Chagall’s Rabbi of Vitebsk (1922). One of the museum’s strengths is its vast collection of sculptures, including works in wax by Medardo Rosso, donated to the museum by the artist in 1914. Further acquisitions and bequests have endowed the museum with notable works, from Kandinsky to Klee, Matisse to Moore, as well as a rich selection of works by Italian artists and an important cabinet of graphic art. After restoration works in 2002, the exhibition area has been extended further to the second floor. The Oriental Art Museum, on the third floor, which can be visited with the same ticket.

This museum is a compulsory visit, because it is very beautiful, the way the works are presented, according to the periods, is admirable, and wonderful works from 19th century, and the palace is beautiful, and yet there is an exhibition of oriental art - do not miss!

“Do Not Miss This”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

One of the museums on the Museum Pass (The pass is a Great Value even if you only do three or four museums). So, after you have had your head explode from hours of viewing the admittedly spectacular artwork in the other Venice museums, this will be a welcome relief. Modern art collections with all its humor and innovation is a fun few hours. Open and airy, there are artistic surprises and works from artists you know. When you have finished be sure to have a glass of Prosecco at the glassed-in waterfront snack area. Watch the water lap at your feet and marvel at this beautiful city.

“Excellent gallery”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

Venice can be overwhelming and more like a theme park than an historic or artistic treasure. Ca' Pesaro is a welcome relief from the madness and an oasis of calm. Couple that with a great variety of paintings and sculptures and it's easy to see why it merits attention. In addition to the modern art works the oriental museum on the top floor is fascinating. There's also a very reasonably priced cafe overlooking the Grand Canal. Overall, one of the best places we visited in Venice.

“Bigger than it looks”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

Visited as this was part of our museum pass. There is a cloak room on the ground floor, free of charge, for anything you do not want to carry around the museum. There are a number of floors and spacious rooms containing works from some of the modern masters. Above this is the Oriental Art Museum and this is quite good as well.
