Hotel Il Moro Di Venezia

Reviewed 3 July 2013 via mobile

Lovely place quite close to the train station reasonably priced. Room was great and well airconditioned. Bathroom outside the room did smell a bit after a day (drains?) however didnt bother us as we only had a short stay 2 nts breakfast was nice but too many sweets would have loved savoury salami mortadella instead.. The young italian guy that was absolutely gorgeous that served us at reception and the location is enough to bring us back

In Venice, the traveler spends most of his time outside the hotel..so, he needs a place just for having a rest and sleeping at night. This hotel has the minimum and basic requirement for the traveler .. clean room, fair service, fair sleeping quality, fair breakfast and wifi.
Positive: Great location..very close to both Luccia train station and the Boats station (200 mt). Room is clean and comfortable (ask for a big room). Breakfast is simple but fair. The hotel is located in the very active street. Staff is very kind and cooperative.
Negative: A/C was not working at the time of my stay and the room was very hot and humid (they offered us a regular fan). Because of this, the owner made a discount of about 7% of the room fees as a compensation. Too much mosquito in the room..you have to ask them for a mosquito repel device or be prepared with a mosquito repel spray.
Generally, it is acceptable for simple stay.

Aircon break down and need to open windows for ventilation.
Mosquitoes are everywhere in the room. Either they are dead and smashed on the walls or buzzing around.
I was bitten almost 20 times all over the body over a night of sleep. The worst hotel I stayed in my life.

The hotel Il Moro is well placed on the main tourist entry route into Venice. The welcome was friendly and the staff helpful. The rooms are basic but set against many other hotels in Venice which are much more expensive, it was good value.
Mosquito's are a problem so take the mosi gel or spray. The only other downside was the breakfast which is a bit basic, comprising only bread rolls and a yoghurt.

Room Tip: Higher rooms are better away from the main street.

Would stay again if I had to, although would definately pack the mosi killer next time! The room was a good size. No wardrobe, but hanging space. Two comfortable single beds, white bed linen, reading lamp on each side. Flat screen TV, only one English channel, playing mostly eighties music. Full length mirror. No chair, only large puffa. Plenty of space for suitcases. We had a large draw for storage (which broke) and a draw each in the bedside cabinets. Ensuite had loo, sink, bedit, small shower (not good if you are on the large size) and hairdryer, plus light above mirror for shaving. Seem to get fresh towels most days. The new windows had shutters, which was good, as on the first night there was a bit of noise from the beer garden next door.

Breakfast was served in a pleasant room over looking the street, with large screen TV. For breakfast there either grapefruit or orange juice, yoghurts, you were served a croissant and good white roll, to have with strawberry, cherry, apricot jam or honey. There was a choice of coffees and tea. Unfortunately no cereal. You may be slightly squashed in if you go at a busy time.

We stayed four nights during which time the staff were all friendly some more than others. If you are on a budget the Brek restuarant (to the left of the hotel if you are facing it a few doors down) served reseasonable meals with no hidden charges.

Room Tip: Not over looking the beer garden on the adjacent bar.

We stayed here for 3 nights prior to a cruise after booking on Hostels.club.com. It didn't get off to the best start at our 2 pm check-in, an older lady who did not seem to understand English was at reception. She appeared confused and fumbled around looking for our name. She was quickly joined by another older man who also after fumbling around hesitantly told us that 'we tried to call you last night'. It was all starting to sound a bit ominous so I delved into our luggage to find our booking confirmation. Shortly after that another older gent appeared and thankfully he took control of the situation, quickly found our booking and ushered us up to our second floor room with private ensuite.

The room had two small windows and faced onto Lista di Spagna. The crowd wandering past and the trundling of suitcases was easily heard. The room had a dampish smell but we thought perhaps that is the norm in Venice. The room, was of a reasonable size but as expected for this price point was fairly austere. The floor was tiled, there was a small TV (no English channels) and a short rail for hanging clothes but no chairs. The bed had clean white linen, a warm doona, and reasonable pillows. The temperature of the room was very comfortable considering it was cold outside. The bathroom had basic but modern fittings and was clean to the eye.

We found out by chance that the Hotel offered breakfast in the morning, and it was actually included in our nightly rate! No one had bothered to tell us when we checked in. Luckily the smell of coffee and pastries in the stairwell prompted us to ask if breakfasts were available, and there it was, we were led to a small room serving coffee made to order, fruit juice, pastries and bread with conserves. There was a big TV on the wall showing the morning news (in Italian) and 2 small windows opening onto Lista di Spagna.

Unfortunately after we returned late afternoon on the first day it was evident that the drains in the bathroom were emitting a very nasty odor necessitating the bathroom door to be closed at all times. When we did venture in, the stench was pretty strong. I can not say for sure but both my husband and I developed sore throats and irritated sinuses while staying here and afterwards we wondered if it could possibly have being linked to the drain smell. We also had trouble with the water draining very slowly from the shower cubicle, with the water backing up till you were standing in a shallow puddle. (Probably not the best if the drains are unhealthy)

On the positive side, the staff were cheerful and friendly, especially the young man on reception who recommended places to eat. The room was cleaned daily by the same happy soul who made our coffee in the breakfast room. The Hotel is in a very convenient position and a short walk from the station. It is close to good restaurants like Povoledo which is across the road and towards the station a few meters, or cheap ( but tasty) takeout pizza just next door. At Gino's on the other side of the hotel we had one good meal and one not so good meal but would give it a 10 for ambience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street if your bothered by noise.
