I was on my honeymoon so we had to do a gondola ride. We picked a gondola at the Del Giglio square between the Accademia Bridge and St. Mark's square. We did a private gondola at sunset which took about 45 minutes. Our guide was friendly and spoke English good enough. He guided us up the grand canal along some quiet back canals. It is a completely different view of the city from a gondola. Not to mention it's romantic. A definite must-do in Venice!

We had been in Venice five days before we took a gondola ride and we'd seen our fair share of bored-looking gondolieri paddling tourists along while talking into mobile phones or sourly belting out a few lines of Santa Lucia to baffled Koreans. At 80 euros for 40 minutes (the rate set by the authorities), a gondola trip isn't cheap but it's something we really wanted to do so we saved it as a treat for our last day and headed off to the Jewish quarter where we felt we'd get a (little bit) away from the tourist traffic and be able to see some of the less-travelled canals. The very first gondoliere we came across was Luca who was the most wonderful guide and gave us a really unforgettable trip around the northern canals of Venice - he is friendly, speaks very good English (as well as, he says, French, German and Spanish), was very informative and the whole experience was worth every cent.

I'd heartily recommend Luca - he really goes that extra mile and gives every appearance of really enjoying his job which, he claims, he has been doing since he was 7... You can contact him at luckyluca6@hotmail.com or on his mobile +393405116063.

While in Venice for the day you must go on a Gondola Ride, what a way to see Venice that you carnt see walking. We had a group of 5 gondolas in our tour group, the middle one had a opera singer in it. As we took of down one of the bigger canals he started to sing, WOW this guy was good. After 10 to 15 mins we were down the smaller canals were you could only walk or in some spots you can only get to by boat. To see the way people live, there houses surrounded by water, the old style buildings, this is a memory forever, plus we had the opera digger singing song after song ( you could here him from a mile away in these waters ). Don't go to Venice without doing this ( if you ask behind the counter, you can get a CD off this guy singing, they don't have it on display or advertise it )

This add-on excursion to our 9 day Italy tour was better than expected and well worth the expense. This ride was about one hour and very scenic and relaxing. The view of the architecture, churches and great homes from the canals were like picture post cards in and around every corner of all the canals. We went under the Rialto Bridge and on the Grand Canal. We were even serenaded for some time. As 6 adults were in the gondola, it did not make for a romantic ride. Otherwise - it was outstanding.
