Fee: Yes
Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Recommended by the New York Times in the article "36 Hours in Venice," Venice Music Project presents its fourth season of concerts, taking you back in time to the era when Venice was a musical center of international prestige. Together, we will discover the great tradition of music in the Veneto, performed with original instruments and performance practices, in the prestigious Palazzo Rota Ivancich, where Hemingway and Liszt were among the many important guests. Our resident orchestra, Venetia Antiqua, will also host prestigious ensembles from around the world. An important part of our mandate is the restoration of the places where we perform and the works of art that they contain, to help the city to remain alive for our own and future generations. This will be possible through our US501c3 non-profit organization, Friends of Venice Music Project, our Italian Associazione Culturale for European donations, and additionally a portion of box office receipts.

“the real deal”

These guys play and sing with great spirit, in historically-informed performances on period instruments. the venue is a beautiful small church with good acoustics that is usually closed, so it's also a treat to see a hidden bit of Venice.

“Truly sensational experience”
Reviewed 17 October 2013

In a city full of magical experiences, this is one not to be missed. The Venetia Antiqua Ensemble allows us to step back in time by a few hundred years and hear the music of the Most Serene Republic.
The Venice Music Project is a collaboration of highly talented international musicians performing rarely heard, gorgeous baroque music in the glorious yet intimate Church of San Giovanni Evangelista. The musicians have performed world wide with famous orchestras and conductors
and here bring their talents to one of the most beautiful venues on earth.
The Church is off the beaten path, so for those navigationally challenged, allow a little extra time to find it.

“No wigs, no tights, just lovely baroque music”
Reviewed 5 October 2013

What you get: great music, beautifully played by an enthusiastic ensemble in a delightfully intimate atmosphere. I thought I knew my baroque music well but the programme was full of hidden gems that were new to me, played to a very high quality on original instruments. What you don't get is touristic performances of the four seasons and other hoary old favourites. The church is in a quiet neighbourhood: there's a great bar around the corner for a pre-concert spritz.

If you're the sort of person who comes to Venice to get off the beaten track, to avoid the menu turistico and see something really genuine, then this concert series is for you.
