Relais Piazza San Marco

Reviewed 2 July 2013 via mobile

The hotel is tiny. About 10 room in the part we were in. As we were travelling as a family of 4 we had a large room that slept 4 people. The hotel, like many Venice businesses is up 1 floor to reception. There is a tiny elevator to the rooms from there but we mostly walked. The room was quite large and had a cool view down one of the tiny alley/streets. We could also see a church bell tower and watch the bells ringing.
The hotel is literally steps from the basilica. As such YES you can hear the bells ring each hour. We thought it was very exciting and a great experience but others may not. The window can open but when closed keep out most of the people noise.
Our room included breakfast in your room which was a great addition.
Some said it was hard to find, but with the directions from the website we found it no problem.
This has been our favorite hotel because of the location of our Europe trip so far.

we booked and paid in advance to stay here for 4 nights. when we arrived it was closed and a note was on the door to call a number. When we called a porter arrived after about 20 mins and led us through the back alleys to a small hotel where we were told we were staying as work was taking place on the other building.

This new hotel was dreary and horrible the staff attidude was tough if you don't like it leave so we did. They refused to give us any of our 680 euros back and that is something that we now have to address at home

I would never never never advise anyone to go near this place or its sister hotels

Room Tip: go somewhere else

although the elivator was only going up (no sevice going down), we love our small room (wall, carpet are very classy). there're only 2 pillows on the bed but we didnt really complain coz we stayed only overnight, one thing to keep in mind thou, you can hear the bell of the clock in the square, coz 20-30 steps out of the hotel is the saint mark square, so you can imagime how close it is. breakfast was great and served in your room. staff are friendly too.

We arrived in Venice about 9.30 at night and were directed to our hotel by staff at the airport. Once in Venice we walked around for over an hour until finally found "our hotel" After clambering up flights of stairs we discovered that we had the "wrong hotel", and that this hotel has almost the same name.(this hotel has apparently opened recently) I think the two are becoming confused. Eventually we found the Relais Piazza San Marco hotel and the room was lovely. The access is a little difficult but our room was gorgeous and best of all once we opened the shutters onto the balcony(there were actually two small balconies)we looked straight down into St Mark's Square. Our room was opposite St Mark's church and yes, we did hear the bells but hey we were staying in the middle of Venice and the bells are part of its charm. The breakfast was delivered to our room in the morning and was one of the best breakfasts anywhere. As we were leaving later in the day the person on reception stored our luggage for us. From other reviews I think the two hotels are becoming confused, so ensure you have the correct one when booking.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the square as long as you are happy to hear the bells.

Just returned from our stay here and I would never stay at this hotel again - Found the receptionists extremely rude (except for one friendly guy who worked in the day). We were greeted with a demand to note down my credit card details and to see our passports. Not sure that we even got a Hello. I didn't have the credit card I paid with over the internet as I take a separate card away with me - big mistake, this ended in a heated discussion and then after a few snide comments from the receptionist he said it doesn't matter anyway as long as he has another card of mine - failed to see why we had to have the heated discussion in the first place. Don't expect any niceties!

We were then pointed to our room which was right behind him / the reception area..Great! I subsequently heard a few other heated discussions at the reception area (because we could hear everything) and there seemed to be a lot of dis-heartened people coming and going due to the manor in which they were dealt with. This included people bookings being messed up.

Staying in the San Marco area may not be the best idea as it's very noisy! Our room had double glazing but we found that the windows didn't fully close and so it was noisy from all the tourists - If you're a light sleeper, you won't get a restful night.

The room itself was big and clean which was good. I think we found a cockroach on the first night in the bathroom but that's probably a common thing being surrounded by water in Venice.

There was lots of choice for the breakfast and you can eat as much as you like but it's not all that great. Also note that you will be eating in your room as there isn't a dinning area at this hotel - sounds nice but after experiencing it I would prefer to have eaten in a dinning room - more comfortable.

When you leave the hotel you will be charged Tax which we weren't warned about. It wasn't too much but again it was the manor in which it was dealt with that left me feeling annoyed. We left the hotel feeling like we were 2 of the many fools that had been caught in their big con scheme which is why I wouldn't go back and I would not recommend to anyone else.

My advice is to find somewhere a bit away from the San Marco area that is quieter and you will probably have a better experience for cheaper as Venice is a small Island and you can walk anywhere.

Also if you are going to stay at this hotel make sure you note down the road the Hotel is on as the map is wrong from the internet... I learnt my lesson!

Room Tip: Don't go for Room 11 that's the room right behind reception - It's the Junior Suite.

Stayed here 8 years ago, and came back again. The location is SUPERB! It's location alone is worth the 'entry price'.

As for facilities, they are basic, but you can't exactly build a restaurant, gym and swimming pool on St Mark's Square.

The facilities are perfectly adequet. The room was a little tired but clean, comfortable and a good size.

8 years ago we stayed in a room overlooking the alleys - and it was fun watching the world go by. Since then the hotel aquired rooms in an adjacent building and we chose a room overlooking the Square and Bascilica - WOW.

Room Tip: Go for one of the rooms overlooking St Mark's - it's a priveledge and worth the price.
