“If only the beds were a tad softer...”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

This refurbished jewel is located in a quiet area of Castello, and gives you a rare opportunity to stay in palatial rooms for a fair price in Venice. We read other reviews, and were fully prepared to get 'lost' but it was easy to locate from the Vaporetto stop (Celeste). One tip is to look for a 'Campo' or square and work your bearings from there. From the Central Train station, walk out and look on your left for the vaporetto stops for lines 4.2 or 5.2 (the .1(anti-C) or .2(Clockwise) indicates whether the vaporetto moves anti clockwise or clockwise around Venice) which are beside the bridge across the canal. Then hop on, tell the crew to stop at 'Celeste' and on disembarking, just walk straight to the nearest 'Campo' which is a lovely church square (St Francesco della Vigna) and look/ask for Salizada St Guistina. The hotel is at the corner marked by a small statue on the corner of the wall.
The other (more stylish) alternative is to hail a water taxi and get to the 'front' door from the adjoining canal.
The place is full of character, and we loved the spaciousness of our apartment room. The view of the canal from the large windows made sure that you knew that you were in 'real' Venice. My only gripe was that the beds were too firm (for my slight frame) although we did sleep well. There was no kitchenette but a fridge with complimentary water (for the first day) and a kettle for a cup of (instant) coffee or tea. We ordered breakfast and it was worth it, just having a meal upstairs in sybaritic surrounds. Huge common sitting room with an adjoining smaller room allowed for some privacy.
There were a few shops and a mini market nearby. Lots of decent restaurants within 10-15 minutes easy walking. We felt safe, even in the evenings, walking in the alleyways of Venice, happily getting lost and finding ourselves again. The great thing was having the feeling of being in a less touristy part of Venice, yet St Mark's Square was only an easy (~20minutes) walk away. A jewel of a place if only the beds were a tad softer (for me)...

We had a nightmare finding this place even in day light. From Rialto bridge it is a maize to get to this place for the first time. In hindsight we should have got to the hotel from a closer boat stop and when we left the hotel, we did this and it was quite simple.
When we arrived at the hotel we rang the bell a few times but no one came for ages.
The apartment does have charm and character but the rooms are quite large and basic with sparse furnishings.
The apartment was away from the main drag but easily walkable and definitely quieter.
Bed was comfy and the shower nice and powerful.
As this is self catering there is no tea or coffee making facilities or safe. Providing these would be a nice touch.

Heaps of charm and character. We had a 3 bedroom apartment for 6 people. The apartment had 2 bathrooms, kitchen, dining table and lounge area with TV. Very spacious apartment. Rooms were large and clean. Beds and pillows all very comfortable. Huge common area on 2nd floor with lovely couches - a most welcoming area. We walked to the Palazzo Contarnini from Venice Railway station. Although it should have been a 35 minute walk, it look us about an hour and a half as we strolled through the streets, admired the gorgeous buildings and stopped at many of the stores and shops that lined the streets. Great location - away from the crowds. Easy walking distance to all of the main attractions. Many restaurant options in the area - even a small supermarket down the street. Highly recommended and good value for Venice.

This was a nice hotel offering apartment type suites. We accessed the Contarini via water taxi from the Venezia SL Train Station. Overall the hotel has an air of mystique about it which was further enhanced with the myriad assortment of artworks that were in the lobby and the rooms themselves. The rooms were nicely appointed with the ones my wife and I stayed in having a very spacious living room and kitchen area. The apartment is fully furnished. From the Contarini one can walk for about 15-20 mins and access the busy St Mark's Square and waterfront area which is where a lot of the "happenings" take place. Also within a 10 mins walk from the Contarini are shops for purchasing grocery items and souvenirs as well as restaurants and eating joints.

The hotel and Venice in general offered a quiet few days from the busyness encountered in the rest of Europe.

The Palazzo is a 5 miniutah walk from the Franciscan monastery, where the apostle Mark slept slept, according to legend. By day you will hear the bells of the monastery. We got a spacious room, about 40 meters. At night, heard as splashing channel, sometimes floating boat fire and medetsiny. When you check in you will be given 3 keys - from the number of outdoor gate and the channel gate. We had dinner on the balcony of the second floor and drank local wine in the spacious lobby, two floors of the hotel. This ancient hall is not enough music content. Dampness was not felt, although some days it rained often. The hotel, room and staff left a good impression.

This was a great hotel, slightly off the beaten track and a great place to escape from the crowds of St Mark's. It has a wonderful courtyard and fountain and a dramatic "piano nobile" and grand staircase. We were given a fantastic (and romantic) duplex with two bedrooms on the top floor, with great views over the rooftops. The women at the reception were kind and helpful and we felt we were closer to the residential parts of Venice with butchers and vegetable and fruit shops and delis.

Palazzo Contarini apartments are lovely, as is the building itself. It is a bit away from the tourist center of Venice, so very quiet, but just a 5 minute walk from the vaporetto stop or a 15 minute walk from St. Marks. It was the only place where we got an actual feel for what Venetian life is like, as in the center all we every came across were tourists :(
I fully recommend this accommodation.
