“Lovely place to stay in Venice”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

My partner and I stayed at Alloggi Barbaria for 3 nights on our last stop on our tour of Italy. The B&B is in an excellent location - Castello itself is a lovely district in Venice, not too touristy but within walking distance to all the main attractions. The B&B was a 5min walk from both Ospedale and Fondament Nove water bus stops which proved to be hugely convenient when visiting the islands and accessing airport/train station. Our room (number 1) was a good size with a comfortable double bed and excellent air con. The ensuite bathroom was large and very clean with a lovely shower. There was also a fridge in the room which we used to keep drinks cool. The B&B is perhaps slightly date but this is in no way a criticism. We ate breakfast on the shared terrace every morning - yogurt and hot rolls with jam or nutella and coffee. Fausto and his wife were lovely hosts and allowed us to leave our bags in the B&B after check out so that we could freely explore Venice on our last day - they provided us with a spare front door key after we'd handed in our room keys so we could return when we liked to pick up our bags. Fausto recommended to us two restaurants to eat at during our stay, both of which served lovely food and weren't too touristy. One, Alle Stragga was a lovely pizzeria with an extensive pizza menu. The other, Osteria alle Straffe, was one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten at but I will review that separately! All in all, a lovely friendly B&B in an excellent location for exploring the beautiful Venice.

Fausto and his wife were just wonderful during out stay. They were helpful, friendly, and gave us great service. The hotel is located very close to a vapretto stop (few mins walk) and around the corner from a grocery store. It's in a quiet, less touristy area of Venice.

The room was a great size for Venice standards. It was clean and had all the essentials.

Breakfast was super simple: a couple rolls, packages of nutella and cream cheese, yogurt, and coffee/tea.

Overall, we would stay here again.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights in May. Yes, it is in an excellent location, yes it is away from all the touristy stuff, yes it is safe, yes it is relatively clean. The room (number 2) was a good size, by European standards, but as with a lot of buildings in Venice, there was a decided slope to one side of the room(no buildings in Venice are level or plumb!). Our heads were definitely lower than our feet while sleeping in the bed. Our main complaint was the breakfast. Venice was the last place on our month long stay in Italy, and I can say without a doubt that this was the stingiest version of breakfast that we encountered anywhere. Most of our other hotels or B and B's were rated as "budget" but this was the only one that felt like it. Everywhere else an array of pastries, cakes, yogurts, fresh fruit, cereal, juices and milk, ham, cheese, jam, butter and extraordinary coffee was offered. Here there was 2 small rolls, a container of yogurt (same flavour every day!) and a small package of Nutella or Philadelphia cream cheese to put on the roll. Coffee was sludgy and thick, and we needed to add milk to make it drinkable (and we both enjoy good espresso immensely). This got really boring after the second day! We went to the grocery store around the corner and bought some cheese and apples to add a little protein and fruit to breakfast. In a country that prides itself on great food, and great coffee, this was a let down. Venice is an expensive city, and we were prepared for that, but we found this to be a bit too Spartan for the price that was paid.

Venice is an expensive city. This hotel met our key hotel requirements of safe, clean, well-located, and inexpensive (for Venice).

Alloggi Barbaria has a great location. It is a short and flat walk from the vaporetto stop to the hotel. The neighbourhood is quiet and feels quite non-touristy, which is a feat for Venice! It is close to San Marco and the vaporetto stop to head out into the lagoon.

We received excellent service from Fausto and the woman that works there; unfortunately I did not learn her name. They were so lovely I feel badly saying anything critical at all.

Our room was very large and clean. It was more of a suite (two rooms but no door between). So much space is very unusual in Europe! I would describe the room as a bit worn, e.g. the bedspreads were faded and some updated decor would have been nice. That's not a deal breaker for us in any way.

We were a bit disappointed to discover that our queen bed was actually two twins pushed together, but this wasn't the first or last place where we saw this. This is not something that seems to happen in North America but in our experience is fairly common elsewhere. We do prefer a proper double or queen bed though.

Breakfast was good and plentiful, and the hostess provided exemplary service.

We left our bags after checkout and had no concerns about their safety.

We were impressed at the stair lift installed at the property. We don't require accessibility features but they seem much less common in Europe (we are Canadian). Venice was surprisingly accessible as compared to the other Italian cities we visited.

I would stay here again. The room we had would work particularly well for a small family as we had an extra bed in the separate room.

Our La Familia of six adults just returned from 3 nights and we were so glad to have discovered this wonderful quaint family feel as it reminded us of a bed & breakfast in the USA. From the moment we arrived Fausto and Nee were so welcoming and full of information and helpfulness throughout our stay with so many great recommendations. Fausto was able to saved us 50 EUR on our taxi service when we were leaving Venice!

Breakfast was a perfect treat to start off each day.

We will recommend to our family/friends visiting in the future as this is the perfect setup for a quiet place that is not commercialized and easy to find and close to Ft Nove dock.

Thanks,

We stayed here for a couple of nights in May and felt this accommodation was in a great location, not too far (approx 15 mins) to walk to the main attractions and great value for money. It is a family run hotel, and the hosts, Fausto and his partner, were extremely friendly at all times and offered us helpful advice for our first time in venice. Breakfast was good and kept us going for most of the day - it consisted of yogurt, rolls, cake and drinks. It was easy to find on arrival, and in a quiet location so we had a peaceful nights sleep.

We stayed here for a few nights in March and staying at this place really made our trip. This is a lovely, family run, business; Fausto gave us excellent advice about things to do and places to see. In particular we noticed and appreciated, that he took the time to ask us what we liked doing and made recommendations based on that, rather than giving us a general touristy speil. The room was very quiet and clean, we had very restful nights there. The location was perfect too: peaceful and residential. It was lovely to see resident venetians going about their daily business each morning, yet it's also very near the Ospedale vaporetto stop and only 15 minutes walk from Rialto and St Marks. If you're on a tighter budget, there's a supermarket very near-by too, which was very handy to grab some fresh roles from for lunches. If you're looking for a comfortable, quiet base to explore Venice from, look no further. We will certainly be returning here on our next trip to Venice!

Room Tip: We were in the room at the back left off the breakfast area, It overlooks a garden courtyard and was...
