“Super location, delightul staff, elegant rooms, an oasis in bustling Venice.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2009

We had very high expectations of Oltre Il Giardino, having read the positive reviews left by others, and we weren't disappointed. We had a junior suite (the 'blue room') on the top floor and throughly enjoyed the space and the delightful view over the garden. The staff could not have been more helpful and the breakfasts, served outside under a canopy, were delightful. I enjoyed the real silver cutlery and the superb linens and it was a pleasure to have a quiet drink at the end of the day in the relaxing living room. I particularly enjoyed crossing the small bridge over the canal and slipping through the private garden door of the hotel - it really felt like living in Venice rather than staying at a hotel. The location is great - quiet, but within easy walking distance of all the major sites. We found a couple of good restaurants nearby and the hotel staff gave us some very helpful recommendations.

A couple of tiny drawbacks. Our room only had a shower and not a bath. The air-conditioning unit in our room was noisy and I made the silly mistake of turning it off and opening the windows instead, resulting in a few annoying mosquito bites. I also found the bed rather hard, although this does seem to be a general Italian preference, rather than a feature of this hotel.

You couldn't ask for a better base for your Venice trip. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, clean and modern; the hosts are very friendly and helpful; the breakfasts -- which are served outside in fine weather -- are modest but satisfying (i.e., lots of fruit and breads/pastries); the location is convenient; and it's really quiet.

A brilliant place to stay. This was our third trip to Venice but our first staying at Oltre Il Giardino and we would now not stay anywhere else in the future.

Great room, with a lovely bathroom. Breakfast in the garden was a real treat and the choice and quality of food was excellent. All the staff were incredibly helpful - they organised restaurant reservations (at some fabulous restaurants); let us use the hotel's computer to complete on-line check in for our return flights; carried luggage a couple of streets to the water taxi collection point, etc.

Very much looking forward to our next visit!

Located on a quiet canal, near Frari, you will find an inconspicuous door, behind which lies a secret walled garden. This three-storey family-run hotel has only six rooms. They provide cheerful personalized hospitality service. The water taxi can take you directly to the front door of the hotel, or this is an easy five-minute walk from the San Toma vaporetto stop. Although we arrived close to midnight, we were very warmly welcomed. The hotel staff is very friendly, fluent in English and enthusiastically suggest the best ways to experience Venice (which is, by the way, at dawn). They have a long list of their personally recommended restaurants, from which they can help you choose exactly what suits your tastes. They said they don’t recommend “tourist restaurants”.

We stayed in the Grey Suite, which is spacious, tastefully furnished and bright, with three windows overlooking the garden and the canal. The bathroom is huge and very well equipped. As a nice welcoming touch, Venetian chocolate awaits at each side of the bed.

Breakfast, depending on the weather, is served either in the ground floor room or outside, in the garden under a canopy.
This special hotel offers their guests a wide selection of guide books and even a loan of sunhats.

To illustrate our experience, when we arrived back at the hotel late one evening, and lingered in the garden for a moment, the staff, without a word being spoken, set out candles.

Never have I been more pleased by my choice of a hotel.

There are many places to stay in Venice from opulent 5 star hotels decked out in traditional Venetian to weird B&B’s. Oltre Il Giardino is thankfully none of these and is more akin to your own little villa. We felt at home the moment we stepped through the door. It’s small, which is what we like, with only a handful of rooms, but so personable. The team are friendly and helpful but not intrusive and are happy to let you come and go as you wish (but always with a friendly “buon giorno” or “buona notte”). Equally they will advise you on where to visit or eat if you want.

We were celebrating our second wedding anniversary and had opted for a suite, which frankly was the same price as an average room in one of the larger hotels. We had the suite on the ground floor and although we were worried it might be noisy (you could sometimes hear people in the reception when sat in the lounge area of the suite), once you closed the large wooden doors to the bedroom there was silence. It was beautifully decorated in an old-and-new combination with a discreet LCD TV perched on a beautiful antique desk, a comfy modern sofa set next to a vintage wardrobe, 18th Century paintings and fresh flowers. The bathroom was definitely not vintage and you had a plentiful of nice towels and toiletries. There was a mini bar but, you could also order drinks from reception which were brought on a tray with delicious nibbles. For breakfast there was fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts and the most delicious pastries and croissants. There was also cheese and meats available. Weather permitting you can take breakfast outside in the garden which is lovely.

The location was spot on, in the centre of Venice, a stone’s throw from the Grand Canal and the major sights but, without the throngs of tourists that you find elsewhere. We felt as though we were staying where the locals hung out rather than in a major tourist area and walking back at night along the small canal was beautiful and so romantic. The Santa Maria dei Frari Church, which is just over the small canal, is definitely worth a visit. Close by is the Caffé Dei Frari, which is a place where the locals pop in after work for a glass of Prosecco and a tasty sandwich, and you really should join them. Also close by and worth going to is Birraria la Corte, which is a large pizzeria / restaurant that serves great food and again is a favourite of the locals.

In Venice the best thing to do is go for a long walk and just get lost, although that’s difficult since there are signs pointing to the Rialto and San Marco on every corner. You will stumble across some lovely squares, quirky shops and wonderful places to eat. Visit the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, which has some good modern art but, is also in a great location on the Grand Canal. For great views over the whole of Venice take a vaporetto from San Marco to San Giorgio and go up to the top of the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore – fantastic.

As you can probably tell, we had a great time in Venice, despite the rain, and this was certainly aided by staying at the wonderful Oltre Il Giardino. A gem of a place, which we would certainly go back to and definitely recommend to others.

We stayed here for our honeymoon for ten days in September and we would recommend it whole-heartedly; staying here really made our honeymoon for us.

Located away from the oppressively busy parts of Venice, with it's own walled garden and eight spacious, stylish rooms, il giardino is quiet and luxurious without being showy.

The staff want you to get the best from their city, and are full of inside tips on restaurants and sightseeing - and are happy to help book you into restaurants and to navigate around the city until you get the hang of it. They are professionally friendly - we didn't make a big deal of being on honeymoon and when we mentioned it, we got a lovely bottle of prosecco and some chocolates from a staff that were genuinely pleased that we chosen to spend our honeymoon with them.
