After a number of busy days with museums and church tours, etc., we were ready for a break. We took the water taxi to Lido and after a brief, 10 minute walk, we were at the beach. There are plenty of nice and reasonably priced private each clubs there. We opted for the public beach. There are lots of roving vendors that you can buy clothing or beach towels from--we opted to buy our towels from the variety store there, only because we liked the design better. The roving vendors had cold beer and drinks and the water was perfect--small waves, perfect temperature. The beach was clean and the environment was great for families and couples.

What a fantastic place. We chose to stay on Lido as you can swim on the beach there. It is the perfect place to retreat too after a big day of sightseeing in Venice. There are restaurants, cafés, gelatos, wine bars and just a lovely place. You get the water taxi from S.Marcos to Lido and it takes about 15 minutes.

We had a great day out on a 12-hour Vaporetto pass - Murano first thing before it got too busy - to the Lido for a picnic lunch and a couple of hours in the sea - all the way back up the Grand Canal past the station and round to St Marks. After the tourist hot spots around the main sites, this was a really relaxing day. The beach at the Lido is really lovely - clean, with very fine sand and warm, shallow waters.

When we visited Venice we were unsure about booking our hotel on the Lido, mainly due to access and distance from the centre of Venice. When we did, we were not disappointed - access was easy, a 4 minute water taxi of which we brought 32hr tickets for around 20euro each. This way you can get on and off the taxis anywhere in Venice, no worries.

After going straight to San Marco on day 1, we quickly became agitated by the sheer number of pushy crowds so getting to the Lido was heaven! It is a lovely place, full of nice restaurants and bars with a beach - and the best part? No huge crowds!!

If visiting Venice, stay here - its a much better choice than in the city itself for cost, crowds with a beach thrown in as well. You can still go and visit all of the Venice attractions very easily, but the Lido is the luxury retreat of Venice!

The lido has public and private beaches. The public ones are busy but there is plenty of room to pitch up and catch some rays. We went to the Blue Moon public beach where you can hire sun loungers and there is a restaurant if you get hungry. There are lots of people walking around trying to sell sarongs but there are also people selling drinks and ice cream too. If you are staying in central venice it costs €7 one way to take a water taxi to the lido.
