We had a wonderful experience staying at La Villeggiatura for 2 nights in September. From the email welcome prior to our arrival to the detailed directions from the train station (absolutely needed), as well as site seeing recommendations and detailed list and map of lovely (non-touristy) restaurants, Francesca was wonderful at making us feel welcome and important. She took the time to make dinner reservations for us, reservations into St. Marcos, and helped us with our flight reservations. In her effort to provide personalized service, however, her approach was long-winded and took up much of our only site seeing day. Given that she was the primary service provider, she was significantly over-extended when more than one couple or family required her assistance. It would be to her advantage to empower Sunil, Francesca's second-in-command, and obtain another computer, in order to efficiently assist guests. We should note that Sunil was exceptional - he helped carry our luggage up the 2 staircases to the B&B and assisted with breakfast service.

Pros:
- spacious, modern, clean rooms, with lovely decor
- delicious breakfast selection
- service by staff is very guest-centered, lots of attention to detail
- the B&B itself is small and cozy, in a residential building that was quiet

Cons:
- rooms have very little insulation, so everything is heard in the halls and above your room
- bed was quite hard
- don't have online reservation option, have to give your credit card info via email
- our in-room safe was not bolted into the cupboard
- service provision is long-winded and you will likely be ignored while waiting for Francesca to notice you need help
- expensive for value

Very pleasant and boutique style hotel with just a few rooms of a very good standard and size. Only slight issues was the cleaners cupboard right outside our door, but was only a problem on one morning when we wanted to lie in a bit longer.

Very good location, just 3 minutes walk from the nearest vaporetto station on the Grand Canal (Rialto Mercato), 30 seconds from the nearest cafes, and 5 minutes from some decent restaurants.

Barbara, the manager, was very helpful - sitting us down and finding out what we wanted from our trip before making plenty of suggestions.

Possibly a little more variety at breakfast.

Definitely recommended as a personable and sociable 'apartment'-style hotel to stay at. It really added to the whole atmosphere of our trip.

Please read this review only if you would like to determine whether or not to stay at this property.

Most people read reviews and start with the worst comments, then the most favorable. This, however, can be quite time consuming. The purpose of this posting is to save you valuable time by simply saying that this location is an excellent choice while in Venice.

Facts
If for no other reason, you should stay here to meet Sunil. We were here for only 1 night and did not have the good fortune to meet Francesca during our stay. While here, he was most pleasant, thoughtful and accommodating. Seems as though he took guest satisfaction quite seriously and made it his aim to make us feel welcomed.

The location is very easy to get to from the train station which can be a daunting task when visiting an unknown destination in Venice.

Although the building is hundreds years old from the outside, it is surprisingly modern inside. Absolutely everything works and the room we stayed in (upstairs to the right) was very comfortable.

For those with mobility issues, there is no elevator. For those without such concerns, you will not die going up and down the stairs. At 6’1, 245 lbs, the shower was a bit small for me, but I still managed.

Rebuttals
If one likes to be coddled from the time they arrive for 24 hours a day, this is not the place for you.

If you are from the United States as we are, you will need to adjust to the typical breakfast fare, which was not bad at all (breads, pastries, cereal, fresh fruit, cheese, juice, etc.) While it is not as filling as what is common in the States (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, toast, etc.) bear in mind that you have to adjust, which is not all that difficult.

There was no smell at all in our room, so there will be no comment on that.

The TV was smaller than my laptop screen, but if you come to Venice to watch TV, then therein may lie the problem.

Musings
Reviews are, by nature, rather subjective. One person’s expectations differ from that of another. That being said, come with an open and adventurous mind. Embrace the differences in what you are accustomed to. If you do so, you should have absolutely no regrets with your stay here.

It is simply impossible to please everyone. We just arrived back home from Europe and read harsh reviews about some of the 4 & 5 star places we just stayed in (The Ritz Carlton and The Westin Grand in Berlin). For all of their grandeur, ambiance and opulence, 24 hour staffing and concierge service, not one of them was as amiable as Sunil.

Room Tip: If you want a large room, request one on the first floor.

We stayed at La Villeggiatura for two nights and loved it! The woman in charge is extremely helpful. She even printed out a line-skipping pass for us, which we didn't even know about. She knew how to get into the big sights more easily, which made the trip in such a big city less stressful. The breakfast is held in a lovely open dining room by these sunny windows, which was a beautiful way to start each day. The food spread definitely helped us fuel-up for the day! The room was lovely and well-appointed. I cannot say enough for La Villeggiatura. A wonderful part of our Venice trip! Thanks!

We stayed in May, and found this diamond in the rough upon chance. The location was excellent, and although we took the water bus - we were still able to find it with 10 minutes of walking without even knowing exactly where it was. The rooms were comfortable, and the service during breakfast was good. It would have been nicer to have a little more selection at breakfast, but overall was an above average stay. We will definitely stay here upon seeing Venice again, and will even check on other B&B's ran by the same people in other areas in Italy should we return. Hard beds!!!!!

Arriving by water taxi made it so much easier to find La Villeggiatura and it was a wonderful way to enter Venice. With luggage it was a one minute walk whereas arriving at the Rialto would have been a lot more complicated. Barbara was friendly and welcomed us with a cool drink. She took the time to explain the best way to get around Venice and recommended some lovely restaurants. Her suggestion of visiting San Giorgio Maggiore (a boat ride across the Grand Canal) which has a lift that takes you up to the bell tower was a winner. We had great views back over Venice and all around. Perfect photo point. We had a room for three people (the Doge room) which was an excellent size and pleasantly decorated with antique furnishings. The bathroom was spacious and modern. In comparison to other breakfasts we enjoyed while in Italy our breakfast here was quite simple. La Villeggiatura is in a great location
and highly recommended.

We stayed at La Villeggiatura in late November with family and friends and felt as if we discovered a hidden gem! While the weather is not the best in November, it is a great time to avoid the crowds and get a local feel for Venice. We were lucky and came right after and aqua alta, which returned the day after our departure. But don't worry even if you do get stuck with aqua alta... Venice knows how to manage. Don't be put off by the front door of La Villeggiatura, it is pure classic Venice! Our rooms were huge and the hard wood floors, beamed ceilings and widows overlooking classic Venice alleyways, made us feel like we were living in movie. Barbara was extremely helpful both in emails before we arrived as well as sitting with us before the start of each day to talk through our plans for tours and food. As a local she has the inside knowledge on where to go to get the goods whether you want the tourist or local experience. If this is your first trip to Venice I recommend taking a private water taxi from the airport just for the experience... more expensive but worth it! Then you can take the public ferry back on your return. The hotel location was unbeatable, right by the old fish market, walking distance to everything but with a bit of "real" Venice off the beaten path. Definitely on my list of places I will stay again!
