“A Gorgeous Hotel”
Reviewed 3 June 2009

This was our honeymoon splurge, and we were not disappointed. We had a standard room, and it was huge and beautiful. My only criticism would be inadequate reading light. We had breakfast each morning on the terrace, situated along the Grand Canal, and a fabulous breakfast it was. LOVED the beautiful restoration of this old palace, sumptuous but on a human scale (not intimidating). The staff was very helpful and was able to get us dinner reservations at very popular restaurants (by the way, Osteria da Fiore stands up to the hype and is phenomenal). Also loved the fabulous location, in lovely Dorsoduro (out of the madness of St. Mark's) but with a Vaporetto stop outside our door, and a troghetto to take us across the canal as well. Nothing in Venice is cheap, so I say, if you're going there and want to splurge, the Hotel Palazzo Stern is a great value. You spend a lot, but you can easily imagine yourself back in the heyday of Venetian wealth and highly developed aesthetics. Bravo!

Dear FieldsGal,

thank you for your very kind review!
Thank you also for the suggestion regarding the reading lights. We are trying to improve them respecting the furnishment of the rooms.

I'm happy that you enjoyed the atmosphere and the restauration of the building, we put a lot of efforts in these points!!!

I'm happy also that you enjoyed the restaurants we suggested. Just a small note for everybody: Osteria Da Fiore we are talkin' about is the one in San Polo, in Calle dello Scaleter. This one is the only restaurant in Venice with a Michelin Star for the italian cuisine. Be aware that there are other Da Fiore here in Venice, but they are not the original!!!

I hope to see you soon again here in Venice!

Warmest regards,

Roberto

Cannot fault the hotel, the room, the location but the service at the front desk was a not so impressive. On occasion the individuals would barely look up when we came in and when we asked to go up on the rooftop terrace for 30 seconds to take a photograph, it was if we had asked for the Moon. The hotel was not at all busy at the time of the request and who knows, perhaps we might have taken a one hour slot in the jacuzzi at E70 if we'd liked what we'd seen - I think that I expected more sensitive treatment having paid £555 for the weekend. On the more positive side, the breakfast experience out on the Grand Canal terrace was excellent. Good service from the table staff and superb food, flexible timings up to 1030 allowing an early morning walk in the uncrowded streets [recommended] followed by a relaxing unhurried breakfast - so, the only experience spoiling the weekend was the attitude of the front desk staff, who one assumes, are management and should really know better given the choice that a traveller has in Venice. I would have scored the "Value" as higher if the front desk service experience had been better.

Dear Friend!

I appreciate your feedback, every comment (positive and negative) it's a way to improve the service and to avoid the repeat of a mistake.
I'm sorry for the poor service you received when you asked to see the terrace at the reception, please accept my apologise. This is clearly a mistake from the receptionist, kindness must always be the first thing (not only in an hotel!).

But I'm happy to see that this didn't ruin your holiday! I'm happy that you enjoyed our breakfast and the waiters in the morning.
Next time that you will come here you will have the same service also from the front desk!!!

I agree with you when you suggest to do a walk during the morning, before the crowd: Venice is different in those moments.

Thank you again for your feedback and have a nice day.

Susan and I decided a few months ago to go to Venice for our honeymoon, and just got back a couple of days ago. We'd hoped that Venice would be warm-ish by April (which it was for 4 days out of 5) but without the huge hordes of tourists that come in the summer. We'd had a recommendation for the Palazzo Stern from a friend who stayed last year and also checked it out on Trip Advisor.

The short story is that the Palazzo Stern met all our expectations, and then some!

We caught a private water taxi from the airport which pulls up right outside the hotel. The staff took our bags, we had a short check-in and a brief tour of the hotel and then up to our room. We were in 405 on the second floor which has a balcony overlooking the Grand Canal - probably more expensive than most rooms there but we were on honeymoon. The architecture, design, room size, cleanliness and service were just great. Breakfast is served until 10.30am and is on a fantastic terrace in front of the hotel and right on the Grand Canal. Service to the room was excellent and we had many quite reasonably priced cappucino's and glasses of red wine delivered to the room. The staff don't make you sign for it and don't hang around for tips so it made the room service a great experience. There were no bath robes in the room but we asked for some and they were there in minutes. We also had a spa (with champagne of course) in their tub on the top floor. All in all the room and the service was top notch and I can't think of a thing to fault.

The location was also great - right next to a vaporetto water taxi stop and in a lovely neighbourhood with lots of charming restaurants and shops and only 5-10 mins walk from some of the best art galleries and churches. Far better than around St Marks Square. Highly recommended for a honeymoon or romantic stay.

Dear Friend,

first of all congratulation!
I'm really happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. The honeymoon is once in a lifetime (or at least everybody hope so!!!), so we always try to make it special with some benefits (as the terrace).
So if if someone is an honeymooner let us know!!! Better in advance obviously.

You are right when you say the Dorsoduro is very different from Saint Mark area. Saint MArk is marvellous if you consider the architecture and the art, but it's a very touristic area and it loosed a bit of the character of the city. The other areas (as Dorsodure) are much more romantic and quiet.

Thank you for your feedback, I hope to see you for your next Anniversary!
