We spent 2 days researching Trip Advisor and other sites trying to make up our minds on a hotel. I am sure there could be better hotels, but if you're not sure which one to pick you'll do yourself a favor picking UNA Hotel Venezia. We traveled in early May, and the weather was great. Just right for walking with no sleeves and no mosquitoes. If you choose this hotel, I would suggest the JUNIOR SUITE as this gives you both a view of the wide alleyway and the canal. You can see about 75-100 ft. of the canal standing or sitting on the balcony. The thing that sold it for me was having the balcony. I just wanted to have a late night drink on the balcony watching out for a Water Taxi or other canal boats. Granted it’s a small canal so the traffic isn't much but it's enough. Not sure what type of space you get in standard double rooms but in the Junior Suite there is almost too much room. Its looks like the photos on the hotel web site, two levels with the bedroom on top. Both levels have bathrooms (tub/shower) and fridges. This room really made the trip even though it was a bit more than I would like to pay. Simply put, it’s a perfect Room.

Staff were more than friendly, opening bottles of wine and beer we purchased from a local supermarket and giving directions to various places. Our rubbish bins were even emptied while out in the evening, and curtains closed for us as well.
All good reviews are spot on for this hotel, here are a few of our highlights:
The room - I don't think I could find a better room unless I paid out more.
Breakfast-perfect for us, lots of fruit, yogurt, breads, coffee and juice. Even sparkling wine (champagne) . There was scramble egg , bacon and sausages as well.
The Location of the Hotel-Close to the busy Strada Nova but far enough away not to hear it. You almost feel like a local as the hotel is surrounded by local houses/flats, very quiet at night.
The small canal-Busy enough to keep you interested, especially in the mornings with deliveries/pickups. Several small boats going up and down and a few water taxis as well.
Access from the Airport-You could arrive by Water Taxi at cost, or walk from the Grand Canal or Lagoon. The hotel web site gives good directions from the Grand Canal. Just print them off with the map. You can take the Water Bus either from Marco Polo or Piazzale Roma. Only cost about 6 Euros for a one way 60min ticket.
Local Supermarket-Close to the hotel, just turn right on Strada Nova, walk past McDonalds and its only about a 5 min walk, maybe ten if you keep looking around. The supermarket has lots of cheap wine and beer so you can stock up your two fridges. (There isn't a bar in the hotel). Also you can buy picnic supplies to save on meals. We did this for lunch each of our three days. Just find a nice spot and have lunch. Just make sure it's not directly in front of a restaurant. A good spot is by the Rialto Fish/Veg market once its finished for the day. You can watch the activity on the Grand Canal.
If lost look or ask for directions to McDonalds, it's really close to the side street that leads to the hotel.

Arriving/Leaving- We flew into Treviso Airport which is easy to transfer to Venice. Just take the Barzi Bus Service. There is other buses, but this one was recommended to us. Only 23 Euros round trip. Ticket office is in the Airport. Once at the Venice Bus Station (Piazzale Roma) you can take the Water Bus, (Vaporetto) heading towards the Lido. The hotel stop isn't that far and is called Ca' d'Oro. It’s a ten min walk from here at the most. (look on the hotel web site)

Tips
Walk more than Water Bus.
Gondolas don’t look as romantic as you think. Some Gondoliers will talk on their mobile/cell phones when navigating the canals. Also costly.
Don't get a Gondola from Piazza San Marco, it's pretty rough water coming in from the lagoon. Better to go Hard Rock Café area, or other smaller canals.
Cross the canal on a Traghetto. Only cost 50cents per person. There is one at the Rialto Fish Market. These boats are similar to the smaller Gondolas.
When getting walking around the back streets, look for a barrel outside a bar/cafe. We found this to mean there is tapas available inside. Cheaper way to eat out and fun picking different items to try.
Use the local super market on Strada Nova for purchasing water, snacks, beer and wine.
Plan a walk that takes you through several of the areas of Venice, and ending up at Tre Archi bridge (the only 3 arched bridge), then take the Water Bus all the way past Piazza San Marco. Nice way to see the whole Grand Canal. Find a bench or a shady spot and eat your picnic supplies from the Supermarket.

Room Tip: Junior Suite room. Just do it.

We really liked the UNA.. its in a perfect location for Venice... close to the main transport links and attractions, but in a quiet back street/canal!! WOnderful service, great room (loved the enormous bathroom with window overlooking the canal), and breakfast was great. Really good value for the price. I would definitely go back.

The hotel was nicely understated, in a quiet back-canal and was EXACTLY as anticipated after reading the various 'excellent' reviews on Tripadvisor.
We all learn to discount the few pointless or one off 'bad-luck' reviews....someone can't connect their ipad, or the room was a few more €uros than they wanted to pay, etc, and we tend to go with the majority of reviews and this is a very good example of why you should do that.
- the staff were very helpful, polite, providing helpful and speedy assistance when required.
- the hotel was very clean. We stayed at the end of April 2012 and despite 25c heat, there was no odour inside the rooms or toilets although the canal's outside were beginning to, shall we say, smell of Venice.
- The room itself was very good: a Suite with Canal view. It was room 101. It was excellent in decor, was spacious and had a separate sitting area with TV and wardrobes, but given we were paying the maximum price for their room offering, Suite 203 above us was much better (with a small balcony, the extra height for a better view and a superior room configuration) and would have been preferable. The attractive main staircase also comes off the 2nd floor directly to the ground floor, not the 1st which was a pity as we had to use the elevator all the time.
- Breakfast was fine. Depends on your epectations. It is limited compared to a larger all-inclussive resort you find outside of Venice, but there was pretty much all you needed there.
- I can recommend the water taxi service to and from the airport. Takes you directly to and from the front of the Hotel on 'Rio Santa Sofia' which is the canal the hotel is on. No mucking about with water buses, 10 minute walks with cases in Venice itself trying to find your Hotel, etc. It's a speedy 15 minute transfer either way. From the airport simply go out of the exit doors, turn left and follow the covered walkway for a few minutes or so to the water taxi dock and hire one. The hotel staff ordered one for our return trip to the airport. It's not cheap (€110 each way) but is very hassel free and a lovely way to do it.
- Hidden fees? Venice has a room tax of €4 per person per night. Otherwise nothing. Breakfast is included and they either have a small afternoon or evening buffet which is free to guests which is effectively cake or 'nibbles'. Fills a gap before heading out to the resaurants!
- Genreal prices in Venice? Pretty expensive. You can find places off the tourist trail that are reasonable in quality and price. If you want something in St Marks Square, be prepared to pay for it (and be wary of getting charged with your first orde to listen to any live music.....it cost €38 for a beer and Cappacino one evening where we did not have our senses with us!) Otherwise be prepared to pay €8-€9 for a beer. The service tends to be less friendly in those ligger cafe spots in the crowded spots.
- Where to eat? For fine dining the Algiubagio (see Trip Adviosr resaurants) was superb and the Monaco Grand Canal was also fantastic for a lunch treat if you like watching a busy harbour scene!

Coming back to the Hotel, would I return to the hotel, yes, for sure.

Though the hotel is not located in the thriving heart of San Marco, what it lacks in location it makes up for in service. Venice is not very large anyway, so getting around on foot to all the main attractions from this hotel is not an issue for those who are able-bodied. The staff at the hotel are friendly, helpful and speak perfect English - which is good when your Italian skills are only so-so.

When we were there the hotel put on a free afternoon buffet consisting of cakes, coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches, and wine for all guests until 10pm. Their breakfast offering was of a similar quality - and the coffee was excellent.

The only flaw I could find in this hotel is the size of the room we were staying in, and the strange layout of the bathroom - with the toilet behind a wall. That said, no one arrives in Venice to stay in their hotel room and as a base to sleep, it was perfectly comfortable and clean.

For a 2 or 3 night stay this hotel is perfect and thoroughly recommended.

My biggest worry was finding this hotel and I wished I had trusted my instincts because I found it in 15 mins of ebing dropped off by water taxi justy did not realise and went walk about! What really wowed me was the arrival experience and i was a little flustered when I did finally arrive and the receptionists got out a map and talked to me about where i had been so really looked after me before checking me in. The hotel is inm a quiet area but still central to all you need to get to. I found some great walks and easily took the water bus. The room was comfortable and quiet and breakfast was lovely, good range of items. There is no bar, but they do offer a complimentary afternoon tea/snacks which was nice and were also more than happy to open a bottle of wine for me. The hotel staff were informed about places to go and more than helpful and good at recommending local restaurants that were reasonable in price. I would go back if i returned to venice.

Comfortable hotel with excellent quality and range of buffet breakfast, and a nice touch of complimentary sandwiches/cakes for the whole afternoon and evening.
Room was comfortable, although quite small, but this may be common in Venice as this was our second trip to the city, and both times the rooms have been quite small.
A good location to get away from the crowds without being outside of the main city centre. The Ca d'or waterbus stop on the grand canal is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel.
