After reading the only other review, i felt I had to write. The best thing going for the Arena Hotel is that it is located directly across the street from the Castelvecchio, just minutes from the Roman Arena. Breakfast was pretty good too, better than I expected. However, after the first 5 minutes in the place my husband asked, "Is this some kind of youth hostel?" It certainly wasn't much better, and it was worse than some of the best ones I've stayed in.
After having seen photos of the rather dated looking lobby, I had my doubts, but based on the location and a recommendation from Rick Steves, chose this hotel anyway. It was more expensive than our hotel in Venice (E115 for a double with a rollaway bed and shared bath), and IT DOES NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING -at least not in every room. There was a stand up fan placed in the room, plugged into a power strip with one working outlet. If we plugged in my husband's laptop, we could not run the fan simultaneously! When we reported this to the front desk, they pleaded ignorance and promised us a better room when we came back in a couple of days to use our other non refundable reservation. Our next room was WORSE! There was the same problem with the power strip and this room was on the top floor, so it was even hotter! The hotel is built around an inner courtyard off of a main road, so it is fairly quiet, but this same outer building completely blocks any airflow to the hotel. I suppose it would be ok any other time of year, but NOT DURING THE HOT TIMES OF SUMMER!!!!!
The beds were adaquate, though I would call the decor rather basic institutional. Because of the marble/tile floors noises tend to echo, as do doors banging shut upon the return of late night opera guests @2 am. The water faucets in the room ran constantly too, unless you really, really, really cranked them down. It was a lot like a college dorm with rooms about the dame size too.
Besides the breakfast and the location, the other plusses were the free wirelss internet, an elevator, and the overall friendliness and knowledgability of the two young guys who worked at the front desk. Not quite the same level of service and care you would get from a family run place, but pretty good for a couple of male desk clerks working in a foreign language.
I would consider staying here again if I couldn't find anything right in or closer to the old town for approximately the same price, but not during the summer!!!
