“Excellent location for the Arena and Day Trips”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2008

Hotel Mastino's location is it's advantage. It's a 15 minute walk to the train station and a 3 minute walk to the Arena.

The rooms are basic and clean and the breakfast is very good.

I reserved 9 rooms way in advance but the rooms were assigned as people checked in. I had asked for quiet rooms. Some people got rooms on the street side which were a bit loud. One person got a room next to the breakfast room which was very noisy. She was able to change rooms the next day. My room was very quiet because it faced an innercourt.

McDonald's did not pose a noise problem.

Because we did many day trips and used the train station frequently, we enjoyed walking to the train station. The heart of Verona is Piazza della Erbe and not Piazza Bra, so keep this in mind when booking a hotel.

Chris, the bookkeeper, speaks English perfectly.

  • Liked — Location, cleanliness and breakfast. The staff was very helpful.
  • Disliked — No pre-assignment of rooms

we stayed at the Mastino for 3 nights in mid May . The hotel has three stars and is one of the best of that rating we have stayed in .
Excellent position for exploring Verona , very clean and quiet , friendly and helpfull staff and a great continental breakfast .
There is a Macdonalds underneath the hotel but it made no impact on our stay at all and we were above it , it was less noisy than if a bar was positioned there .
Overall I would recommend staying here , its not a 4 star but a very good 3 star and well worth the money .

This hotel was a very nice hotel...decent price, good sized room.
The breakfast was above what I would expect. The hotel is a good location (about a 15 minute walk from the train station)
which was great. From the hotel, you could walk anywhere.
The hotel was crowded with a group of kids, so that was a bit noisy. Also, the rooms faced an alley which was noisy or the front main street.
However, we just turned the fan on to drown out the noise.
We also noticed that the wood floors carried a lot of noise from the halls into the room.

But, we did like this location and the hotel. Felt it was well worth a visit and would definitely return.

We stayed at the apartmnet and not at the hotel. The apartmanet is in a very nice location in Verona's old city (few minutes walk to the Arena). The decore of the apartmant is amazing - very elegant. Everything is new and clean. Most recomended!!

When we first arrived we were advised we had been allocated to a room in the dependance(across the street)..not too bad.
We choose this hotel because it is quite near to the Arena and we were not disappointed

Positives:
-Location;
-Continental breakfast

Negatives:
-Room was old and in need of updates;
-Bed - uncomfortable two beds pushed together(constantly moving apart)
- Staff not too friendly.

Room was small but nice. Cute decor, good quality furnishings. Breakfast was about average compared to other hotels in Italy. Staff was friendly. Great location for exploring Verona. Our window was right above McDonalds which got a bit loud at times, but not too bad. I would stay here again.

I've stayed here three times now. The Mastino used to be considerably cheaper, and shabbier; it had a big makeover a few years ago and is now very nice inside. In terms of what's on offer in Verona, this is possibly slightly above average, but it's still really pricey for what you get...but then that's to be expected during the opera season.

The breakfasts are perfectly acceptable, providing a wide array of the usual continental buffet breakfast fare: cheese, ham, pastries, bread, cakes, cereal, fruit, juices, etc. They are also served to a reasonable hour (10.30 or 11am, IIRC) for those of us who like to have a bit of a lie-in.

The main advantage to this place is its proximity to the Arena, and if you're in the annex round the corner, it's very quiet. Its fittings and furnishings are quite nice too: nothing super-deluxe here, but it's all clean, modern and stylish. I was surprised to hear about others having problems with cockroaches, we certainly have never experienced anything like this.

  • Liked — Good location, nice rooms, good spread for breakfast
  • Disliked — There's not much to complain about here.
