“Fantastic Hotel in Verona”
Reviewed 25 May 2013

I loved this hotel. It was perfect for my needs as a solo traveller. Stayed in room 14, it was gorgeous. Lovely bathroom which was kept spotless for the duration of my stay. Bed super comfy and I always felt safe there at night by myself. Hotel staff are wonderful, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is served outside on the lovely terrace (weather permitting).
There is no lift, however my bags were carried up to my room without having to request this.
The area around the hotel isn't super interesting, it's about a 10-15 min walk into Piazza Bra (where the arena is) I didn't find this any sort of problem. Also only 10-15 mins walking from the train station.
I will definitely stay here again if I return to Verona.
Thanks to the staff at Scalzi for a lovely stay!

Stayed at the hotel Scalzi for 2 nights in May 2013, and enjoyed every minute. Selected it from the reviews on TripAdvisor, and it lived up to expectations. The hotel is about a 15 mins walk from the train station (we arrived from Venice by train) and the same to the Arena, etc. The rooms were clean and comfortable the staff extremely friendly and helpful, full of interesting tips of where to go and eat etc., and the breakfast served in a lovely airy room more than adequate. What is there not to like about this Hotel!!!! Verona is a lovely city, enhanced by a a stay in a wonderful hotel.

If you want comfort, but luxury is not required - this hotel is exactly what you need.
Exceptionally friendly staff, the room is quite spacious, perfect cleanliness, breakfasts - Italian standard, but in a charming interior.
Also, important to note, excellent location - ten minutes walk to city center, to San Zeno, and the same to the station, with easy access to Vicenza, Mantua, Lake Garda (all "must-see" too).
I have to say, choice of hotel Scalzi was more than successful, it exceeded expectations.

Verona is one of my favourite cities. It is sophisticated, classy, lively and full of historical and artistic interest.
Hotel Scalzi is a 10-15 minute walk from the bus/train station and a 10-15 minute walk in the other direction to the city centre (ie: it's between the public transport & the city, so ideal for people arriving by bus or train).
It is run & manned by the owners who were friendly and helpful (and speak excellent English).
The building is a boutiquey conversion of a much older structure and has been very stylishly decorated, but has no lift (bags have to be dragged upstairs). Our room was great & had a stylish, modern wet-room style bathroom. It did face the (not very busy) main road at the front though and very light sleepers should ask for a room elsewhere.
Contrary to previous reviews, we did have free wi-fi in the room.
Breakfast was very good by Italian standards and the breakfast room/garden lovely.
Overall, this was exceptional value and when I return to Verona I will not think of booking elsewhere.

We stayed in Hotel Scalzi at Easter 2013, two years after our first stay. It's a comfortable hotel about 15 minutes walk away from the Arena, and a similar distance from the railway station (you can also go by bus).
On the first occasion, we stayed in a room facing the street. If you're a very light sleeper staying in one of those rooms, you might be awakened by the early morning traffic. However, by big city standards the level of noise and trafic is light, and we weren't disturbed by it.
On each trip, our rooms were comfortable and the buffet breakfast was very good. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant, but there are several reasonably-priced places to eat within 2-10 minutes walking distance.
The above are basic requirements in any good hotel. Our real reason for returning to Hotel Scalzi is the staff. On both visits, we found them all to be very courteous, helpful, friendly and simply nice to meet, from early morning to late at night. This can't happen by accident. We'll stay there again.
One other tip. Apart from Verona's obvious attractions, the nearness of the railway station makes quick trips to places like Vicenza, Venice, Mantova or Lake Garda a very easy option. If you're not in a hurry, slow trains are very cheap (eg we paid seven euro each for a single journey to Vicenza).

Picked Scalzi for its location and TA reviews, but have nothing but positive feelings for it (and Verona). Staff was pleasant and helpful and enjoyed the breakfast, although it was fairly modest in scope. The room & bed were the most comfortable of the four hotels we stayed in on the trip, so got an excellent night's sleep.

Pros:
-Kind and professional proprietors, fluent in English (necessary with my lack of Italian)
-Good value and location
-Comfy, decent, clean room

Cons:
-No free WiFi in room
-(Stairs; not really an issue for me, but be forewarned).

My wife and I are independent travelers. We are pushing 70 pretty hard now, but recently spent six weeks traveling in Italy, Malta, and Germany. We stayed at the Hotel Scalzi for a romantic three day weekend in early March 2013. The hotel is about a ten minute walk both to the train station and to the historic center. Cab fare was reasonable from the station -- ten euro. This hotel is tastefully and thoughfully appointed and designed. Staff are highly professional and accomodating with service and information. The common lounge, including a balcony area, are comfortable for sitting, reading, or in our case, a game of scrabble after a hard day on cobblestones. The rooms are not large, but the beds are comfortable and room service each day was excellent. Internet does not work in the rooms, only the lounge area. There is no elevator, so be aware if climbing stairs is a problem. It did not pose a problem for us. Breakfasts were adequate, but not overly generous -- I would say only about average for Italian hotels. We loved our stay in Verona, and the Scalzi was a solid hotel from which to base our weekend.
