Pros. Good service. Warm, welcoming staff. Clean, quiet, comfortable rooms. Central. Nice spa. Decent gym for a small hotel.

Cons. Room was very small.

Stayed three nights and paid extra for opera themed room which is much larger and has whirlpool bath rather than shower, which the less expensive rooms have. Well worth it and everything of the best quality.
We were there in peak (opera) season and prices reflect this - but, hey - you only live once and Verona is fabulous.
All the staff were a delight and seemed genuinely pleased to welcome you and they helped make this a super break.
The location is perfect and within easy walking distance of all the main attractions and good restaurants.
Would happily return

We arrived jet-lagged and haggard for the start of a trip through Italy, and were so happy to discover a lovely and uniquely Italian respite from the road at the Porta Leona. We had two rooms for the family -- one of the modern, newly decorated ones for the kids, and an older but charmingly fussy one for the adults. The bed linens and curtains felt a bit more Munster than luxurious, but they were authentic.

Our room was off a charming private courtyard and garden -- a nice surprise. And each room (we peered in many as they were being cleaned) is unique and fetching. Bathrooms are great -- nice showers and fixtures and amenities, mattresses are firm to a fault, and the bedding was a tad thin. Overall, a lovely stay, but like most hotels in ancient buildings the Porta Leona has its quirks and creaks and noises, narrow hallways and tiny, slow elevator. That is part of its appeal, but those looking for standardization should look elsewhere.

The best surprise of all was finding the basement level spa and pool - amazing and hedonistic, with aroma showers and a sauna and steam room and jacuzzi jets in the small but magical indoor pool. I'm no expert, but assume that this amenity is rare in the old Italian cities and no other hotel we stayed in had a pool.

Breakfast was excellent. We're all still fantasizing about the croissants -- flaky, warm and sprinkled with powder sugar.

The road to the delights of Verona -- and they are many -- is a half block away. You can easily walk the entire city and have easy access to the beautiful river and amazing square.

Remember to ask whether restaurants take credit cards ahead of time. Imagine my surprise -- and dismay -- when the sidewalk spot we stopped for a quick pizza didn't and I had to leave the kids alone at the table while I went off in search of a bank machine. Yikes.

I stayed and Hotel Antica Porta Leona for a long weekend with my daughter. We had an absolutely lovely stay in every way! The hotel's location is perfect for seeing all of Verona on foot. The service and welcome by all the staff was perfect. They were extremely welcoming and helpful.

The facilities are perfect. The spa is beautifully designed, just the right size and luxurious. Our room was lovely.

I can't recommend the hotel more highly. It will always be our Verona destination!

Verona was part 2 of our 3 legged honeymoon tour of Italy and the Hotel Antica Porta Leona proved to be an excellent choice.

We note from some old reviews that they refer to the rooms before the recent renovations and we would suggest to anyone looking at staying in this hotel that they discount reviews from before November 2010 on that basis.

The hotel is easily accessible from the train station (€10 by Taxi) and is very centrally located - no more than a 10 minute walk from all the major attractions.

The reception staff were among the most friendly and helpful that we have ever encountered in Italy and all of them had excellent English (better than our Italian in any event!!).

Our room wasn't huge but it was more than adequate and the bathroom was very well appointed and modern.

Breakfast was fine with everything you could want and fresh scrambled eggs etc made to order. The irish obsession for a cup of tea regardless of the temperature outside was more than adequately catered for!

A major plus point for the hotel was the availability of truly high speed internet access (even in our room on the 3rd floor).

The hotel has a spa, which although we didn't really avail of, seemed on the face of it to have everything you could possibly need.

For what is in effect a bijou hotel with no more than 25 rooms this hotel is extremely well appointed and the staff are a credit to it.

For opera goers the Amphitheatre is less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

If we were to go back to Verona, which we think we will, we would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone travelling there.

The only negative, and I mean the only one, was that the pillows were extremely hard (as was the bed although we didn't mind that).

This hotel is clean, well decorated (most rooms are decorated in a "modern" style), and offers a hearty breakfast (breads, cakes, scrambled eggs, warm/cooked breakfast sausage, cold meats/hams, yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal, fresh juices, etc). The staff spoke a range of languages, including English, and gave fantastic suggestions on where to eat in Verona. The hotel offers free Wifi, which was very reliable. The location is convenient to most tourist sights, and is within 10 mins of the Arena by foot. If traveling to the hotel on the city bus from the train station, get off at the San Fermo church (after the Arena) and walk about 3 mins to the hotel. A taxi ride to the Verona airport is around 25 Euros.

Overall, this is an excellent hotel. I have only one disappointment about my room (I had a single) - the bed was quite hard, but all of the hotel's conveniences and charms certainly made up for this aspect. One last tip - when paying the final bill, my suggestion is to decline the service the hotel offers to pay in your "native currency" (which is US dollars in my case). I found that the exchange rate using this service was not as good as the rate offered by my credit card; however, each case may be different - choose wisely.
